number plates

I've just ordered myself some new plates, regulation size and font but.....i've got a border going round it with the skoda badge in it plus some small writing in the bottom left had corner (briskoda.net). Since talking to mates who know everything (everyones got them) they reckon they are not legal.

Any ideas? Since buying them I haven't seen ANY plates with borders, only dodgy small ones on bikes.

cheers

check out this link to the DVLA http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regm...nts.htm#thelaw

States that only a boarder with the euro symbol and national identification letters are allowed, and there should be no other symbols or markings

I was thinking of getting some of these but I don't think I'll bother now.

Thats right, they are not legal.

BUT, I have seen lots of cars driving round with other symbols. You of course do this at your own risk. There is a risk of a fine and points I think for displaying them and getting caught.

Word of warning you will get caught esp. if it is dodgy font. 4 folk I know had different plates, and they were all pulled over. Some were giving a defect notice to change them one was fined.

*Qoute* The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)

I don't want to give free advertisement for companies! (It's the same when dealers put stickers on the back screen of your car) But I'm guessing it's just another one of the stupid english laws that we will have to follow!

I was going to order myself a set to but I don't think I will if I'm going to get a fine!

It's all about drawing attention to yourself. If you do something stupid and they pull you over they might add the 'illegal' number plate to the list. Just do the numbers: millions of cars, millions of plates of which millions made before the watershed...

if you had a normal set in your boot without the border do you think the police might let you off with a warning? But yeah you are right I've seen lots of people with really dodgy number plates but they seem to get away with it ok. Guess it comes down to attitude

Probably down to individual forces, Strathclyde are particular hot on this and have a large number of patrols. They seem to hate all the italic rubbish and as a result I hardly see any non standard plates any more, even on the heavly modified Saxo's and Corsa they still have standard font. They still do a lot of vehicle defect checks, by sitting and pulling cars every so often like the random drink drive tests at Christmas.

I have a set with the st Georges cross on them and have never been pulled in 3 years, and the amount of cars I see with non standard number plates (Jamaica, Islam symbol, etc on them).
As long as you have the standard UK font you should be ok

Can't resist......

How about "diesel rollerskate" or "when I grow up I'm gonna be an Octy vRS" (may be a bit long that one?)

I got finned for having a skoda badge on the side of my plates in Lincoln. He said he only pulled me as i was young in a nice car. He did not take kindly to me calling him a ****.

He said will you remove the plates when you get home i said no. New plates are £35 and the fine was £30. Bean on the car 6 months so i dont mind paying the fines. Look on his face was funny then he told me to go on my way.

I just cant see why there is a problem with it! As long as the font is UK standard does it really matter if there is a border around it? Does anyone have a good reason why this is wrong?

And no to the Diesel rollerskate!! lol

I'd quite like Skoda badges on mine, which are currently "plain" with no flags etc, but to be honest i can't be bothered with the hassle of the local Doughnut munchers stopping me when they have nothing better to do

so at the moment they are officially illegal, but I as I also mentioned other signs that will remain illegal i think it is still valid.

it is against the law to retrospectivly apply a law....

if your vehicle was registered before 1/9/2001 (i.e. y or older) the font / border / logo laws are not actually enforcable.... if you were to decided to go to court....

'Tis true!

The trouble is, the law as it was prior to 1/9/2001 would be applied - no logos AT ALL, and font/spacing etc. such that the reg. number is "clear" in the opinion of the prosecuting officer. More open to interpretation, for good or ill depending on which side has/had the better lawyer.
