You could do a tour of the highlands. Start at the bottom like Pitlochry and work your way up the way to Inverness and beyond. I love it up there.
Or the Lake District is good. I love it there too. I know a reasonablly priced B&B down there.

Lake District would be good.
Worked down that way for a while and loved it.

I love going down there on holiday.
Going twice this summer. Camping in June then a cottage in August.

Northumberland Beautiful rolling fells, best beaches in England (Seahouse up to Bamburgh) Best Kippers in the world (Craster) ….well I think they are and some fabulous empty and open roads. The folks are friendly and a day out at Alnwick Gardens and its Tree House Restaurant. My favorite place in the whole world is Northumberland. Hee are a few pictures of Alnwick gardens

This isn't a very good shot, but that little digger/tractor in front of the fountain was one of several that were free for the kids to play on. Mind you i took the photos a few years ago, they might not still be there.

Top end of lake Windermere (Ambleside) is gorgeous! Went there about 7 years ago and really should go again! Nice roads to drive along too - think it was the Kirkstone pass I drove up (and down) in a Golf TDi a few years back - highest pub in England is at the top of the pass IIRC.

Edit: it's the 3rd highest in England, and the highest in the Lakes: Kirkstone Pass Inn: About Us information Page

Re: short break in uk

I should add that in general, Northumberland isn’t overcrowded with tourists, unlike many more ‘famous’ places. Alnmouth can get a bit busy in the high season but most people think it is going to be freezing cold and grey. I’m sure you will know what the weather is like there and the scenery is stunning. It’s the best kept secret in England.

Re: short break in uk

I have to agree with Northumberland too.

I've worked in Alnwick many a time, but never had the oppertunity to look around. But the high street etc certainly looks a nice place for a wander.

A few of the older shops have now sadly gone, but it has lots of nice little cafes in the square. Also the Castle is in pristine condition and worth a look if you like that sort of thing. In fact if you like castles, Northumberland is a bit of a gold mine. I think I read once that there are around 35 in total. The walk from Craster along the ragged cliff tops to the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle is great and you can pick up some crab and kippers from the smoke house in the harbour on your way back.
