SORN car no MOT no insurance.....help!

My girlfriend has sadly failed her test 3 times over the past few months. (very nervous at the wheel, gets the better of her)

She has had her car MOT'd, Taxed and Insured since Last Feb. So she has been paying for insurance, tax and petrol during this time.

She has her next test booked for march (fingers crossed this time).

So at the moment........
She has no MOT (ran out in November)
Her Exhaust fell off during December (how i dont know, needs a new one)
We have SORN the car from 1st Feb
We are not insuring the car on renewal time, which is end of jan.

She has done this so that she hasnt got to pay to run a car she cannot drive, being a learner.

I know this is long winded................but thanks for reading.

My problem is now.................when she passes she want to get the car back on the road. How am i going to do this.

1st step i know is to insure it. but what then...................

I cant drive it to a garage to have the MOT done and exhaust cause it has no tax to drive it.

I cant tax it as it has no MOT.

Where do i stand on getting it to a garage ????????????

EDIT: or do i just risk driving it, even though it sounds like a tank, that can be heard from miles away.

Re: SORN car no MOT no insurance.....help!

If you book it in for an MOT, I believe you can drive the car locally without MOT and Tax as you can't get one without the other...

I wouldn't drive it a long way but I'm sure you'd get away with only doing a few miles

Re: SORN car no MOT no insurance.....help!

Hopefully the car is currently parked on a private driveway rather than a road.

As tdirob has said, you can drive to and from a pre-arranged mot. You must use the most direct route (eg. not go to shops on the way). Once MOTd just get the tax as nornal.

Insurance runs out this week or next. So she will have 1 years no claims. We will just hunt for quotes when she passes with her 1 year no claims.

She doesnt want to spend money incase she fails again. At the moment there is a 2 month wait on driving tests.

Re: SORN car no MOT no insurance.....help!

You can drive the car to a pre-arranged MoT, or to a garage to have repairs done, so, as long you make sure they have one with your name on it, you can take it to a localish exhaust centre (but not say up to Awesome for a sports system) before the MoT.

of course not, otherwise how could a learner practice in their own car?

My wife had her Ibiza insured on a provisional with me as a named driver whilst she was learning. We found Norwich Union were by far the cheapest as they didn't charge anymore for having a provisional rather than full.

Re: SORN car no MOT no insurance.....help!

don't you still have to have insurance cover on the car to take it to the MOT station ?
