Speed Cameras?

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone had any details relating to speed cameras.

Literally just went through one of the forward facing speed cameras on a stretch of dual carriageway at around 85mph. I'm fairly sure it flashed but after talking to a couple of mates, they said the forward facing ones don't flash...is this true?

They thought it might just have been the sun reflecting in it, which may have made it seem like it flashed.

Does anyone have any thoughts; even details on likely punishments (!) would be appreciated.

The road was the A21 just before the Tunbridge turnoff (speed camera just after the lay-by)

Thanks

Can't help you with any advice, but if you check here you should be able to get some good indication as to what to expect.

Generally speaking...

Gatso cameras (big grey ones) don't get you from the front, but it is possible to trigger them approaching from the "wrong" direction.

The blue ones (Truvelo) WILL get you from the front but don't "flash" in a conventional sense although it is occasionally possible to see the flash depending on the light conditions.

If it's a mobile, they can get you in either direction.

Forward-facing ones don't use a traditional flash, as that would run the risk of blinding the driver and causing an accident (bit of a steep penalty for speeding that!) - they do use some form of infra-red flash, IIRC. Seen one go off when it was dark, and it appeared to be a purple coloured flash...

Depending on the road, 85 might not be enough to trigger the camera anyway...

I've seen forward facing cameras in Chatham flash speeding cars! Couldn't tell you what colour the flash was though.

The thing I'm most worried about is points and an increase in insurance premiums. Any ideas of the liklihood of points? Not to fussed about a small fine but could obviously do without it!

Well, if you are caught you'll get points, unless they are one of the forces that have a driver improvement course thing. Gatso's BTW can get you forward facing but it's an expensive modifiation and not very many have it.

No chance of just a fine then?

You can see truevelos flash as you go through them. I've set off enough on my bike to know , although its much easier to see them in the dark.

Gatsos can also be set off in the wrong direction as you go towards them , but they only flash once. This is due to a software bug , and they only do this when empty.

The standard fixed penalty is 3 points and 60 quid , although a few forces do a speed awareness course instead of points.

As for insurance , 3 points for speeding will make little or no difference to your premium.

It was in Kent. As far as insurance is concerned I'm not exactly an insurance company's friend. Male, 21, with a £6,000 claim just under 3 years ago (my mum's Audi A2 did handle too well in the wet!) and 0 NCD! so add on 3 points and I'm worried I might be untouchable! Although in July the accident will be over 3 years ago and I'll be 22 with hopefully 1 years NCD.

Also with insurance, is it possible to build up a NCD on a policy not in your name? As I am insured under my Dad's company car policy so was hoping to be able to get a letter from them, and therefore hopefully get 2 years NCD in July when my insurance needs renewal? Any ideas?

Posted a similar thread on 5five-0.com and a bloke there reckoned:
For 85mph in a 70 - probably 3-6 points and a £60 fine.

Kent don't appear to offer an alternative to points , so if you do get done then you will end up with the extra typing on your licence.

Inscos tend to ask about claims in the past 5 years , so you may have a while to go before you can forget that as well.

Still , you will have a years NCD when you come to renew so points (assuming you get any) won't necessarily be too bad. What car do you drive?

Some companies will let give you a bit of NCD when you aren't the main driver but thats generally only husband and wife. You won't get anything just from being named on your dads company car.

I think egg and elephant only ask about 3 years. I was hoping to have letter from my Dad's insurance company saying that I had driven on his policy accident free for a year.

It was actually his Superb (2.5 V6 TDi PD) that I was driving. Shame it is Sahara Beige!

On the bright side if your speedo said 85 you were probably only going about 78-80.

I got flashed by a by a blue forward facing camera (Truvelo I believe) in Northamptonshire and it was rather a powerful white flash even on the bright sunny afternoon. I think cos it was hidden behind a sign I glanced at it - what the hell is that kind of thing - that is when it went off! Speed kills? Yeah right not half as much as a flashing white light in your face will - ask Princess Di's chauffer!
...Rant over!

Well I did get a NIP so I said I did not know who was driving but that as I owned the car I accept that I will be prostituted (same thing!)The pic did not even show anyone in the car it was so poor!! They wrote back demanding I go to court for withholding information! Thought that was a bit steep so did not bother going - going to get done either way right? Have not heard back since and the court date was last Dec - nice letter in post should be anytime soon!
Funnily enough though I spoke to a traffic policeman a few weeks ago and he said he would not even have bothered - I was doing 82. I accept it as just another tax!!!

I would argue the case. Say you can't remember who was driving. If they say "you can't use that as an excuse", then ask why this man wasn't prosecuted in a similar situation

As it happens I did say that they just said that I was witholding information so I have to go to court - even tried calling several people to say that yeah it looked like my car I accept I will get done for it - they said that it was a court case now - talk about a waste of tax payer money!!
Might get some different plates made up and fly through a few cameras just to make it all a pain in the ar*e for them - actually I can't be bothered but the thought occurs anyway!!!
