We got a Rowenta Steam Generator iron (after trying a cheapo from Netto ) from Empire Direct.
Apparently came out one of top ones according to Which Consumer mag.
Wife well pleased

Re: Steam Iron recommendations

I think the Which review was from last year - it was mentioned in the blurb for one of the Rowentas that were on sale at the time at Empire Direct.
Ours is a DG9010 - possibly discontinued now, why it was available at such a good price.

A few customer reviews -
Amazon.co.uk: Rowenta Frontal Precision DG7140G0 Steam Generator: Kitchen & Home

Need a new iron, whats the best steam generator iron to buy? - Yahoo! UK & Ireland Answers

The Tefals get a pretty good write up elsewhere I see - I don't think you'd go wrong with one

Re: Steam Iron recommendations

You can't go wrong with a tefal. MIL had one of those steam generator things and she couldn't get on with it. Too restrictive and too much messing aboot. So she went back to a normal Tefal instead.

Re: Steam Iron recommendations

There's a very recent Which report 01/05/08: Steam irons | Overview

which should be current models. Probably worth looking at for a quid. Costco have a Tefal Pro Express model for £117 at the moment bt I'm not sure exactly which model it is, there's loads with that name.

Re: Steam Iron recommendations

TBH - mooching through Kelkoo etc - Rowenta seem to have stopped producing many of the 'upper' models.
Looks like you'll be getting a Tefal

We've got a decent tefal (cost about £50 a few years ago) but swmbo wants more POWER! Knowing my luck she won't like the generator one either.

Re: Steam Iron recommendations

Wife well chuffed with ours. Bit bulky (they overhang ironing board both sides a bit) - but she soon got used to that.

You have to put the base on the ironing board?

That means we'll need a sturdier board and she'll still knock the bloody thing over. I'll be needing recommendations for ironing boards too at this rate.

This anniversary present will cost me a fortune

Base on ironing board - yes.
TBH it looks a bit iffy but ironing board stands it OK and is pretty safe / secure.

Checked in Costco, they're asking £118 (inc VAT) for this TEFAL UK Web Site - Pro Express - GV8120

compared to £147 - £200 elsewhere Tefal Gv8120 - Compare the Best UK Prices - Page 1

As long as you're willing to pay.

Stay at home mum with 3 month old baby, its not like she's got anything better to do and its about time she started to earn her keep.

There's telly to be watched you know! Tsk! Menfolk.

If you want my opinion - then I'll shut up I think you should keep yor money in your pocket until she learns for herself the pros and cons, the weighting and balance etc. of particular models.

Steamers don't suit everyone (especially those who prefer a "pressed" finish rather than just a crease-free one). Plus you have to air everything. Waiting time for steam and duration before having to refill etc... The whole "rigging up and storing away" thing is what puts a lot of people off labour-saving gadgets. I looked at them since I like steam but decided against it.

Perhaps determine whether a posh new ordinary steam iron might be better? Rowenta are far better for lots of steam than Tefal in ordinary irons by my reckoning, and both do vertical steaming. Would the Missus even bother with a steam generator? They can weigh a heck of a lot (think RSI), plus, since many "new mum" (baby) things can just be folded straight after a tumble dry if a decent fabric softener has been used in the wash... IOW, if it's just for your crisp shirts, steam generators are really designed for that...

Bottom line? I wouldn't buy one for someone else, or in your case, unless the Missus really does think she'd benefit from one and chooses her own. Too much money to sit in the cupboard.

I hope Mr A or others who have one will come back and say if I'm talking through my hat. If so, I might even consider again getting one for myself

Regards
Mo

But then she complains about how bad daytime tv is

I hear what you're saying Mo but she thinks she wants a big steam thing so thats what she wants. Weight is about 5kg but we do have somewhere to put it when not in use.

Unfortunately dryer is playing up so everything is getting aired and is a pain to iron.

See, about 5kg is what I found from my research so we're on the same wavelength. I've just filled up a bucket with 8 pints of water which we all know weighs 10 lbs. 5kg according to my reckoning is 11 lbs. I could just lift it off the floor - well, just. For the price of steam generators (and domestic ones are not as good as the professional ones at £300+ easily a pop), maybe you should buy a new tumble dryer?

I know you're saying but, but and I'm saying but, but, so I'm gonna be on tenterhooks now till I find out what you decide. Darn. Put me out of my misery soonest

Best
Mo

Yes, clothes do end up very slightly damp from steam generator. But not so that you can't put them away a short while after.
Least that's what the wife does

No address needed, just apply online. 6-barrel Russian roulette revolver loaded and waiting for your calls to end my misery. Just choose any number from 7 upwards. That's all you need to do. Cost per minute could be more from mobile connections.

My tumble dryer manual says that it leaves some water as being natural for the fabric. On the one hand, yeah right, on the other, I do actually believe them (though how much water might be a bone of contention I suppose). Edit: I do disagree with drying the heck out of things (natural oils and all that). Bone dry ones would pick up ambient moisture. I personally wouldn't stack damp, folded things away. Well, heck, if I'd done all the ironing or steaming, someone else can do that! The system works - by the time a someone (usually me) puts them away, they'll be dry anyway

What about this weight thing though? Pretty please

Mo

Baby is now up to about 12lbs so weight isn't an issue but I'm just glad she didn't ask for a steam press.
