If a tree falls in the forest, and there's no-one around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Thanks, Basil, for giving me the opportunity to quote Monsignor Ronald Knox, priest (RC), theologian, crime writer and Sherlockian:

There was a young man who said "God
Must find it exceedingly odd
To think that the tree
Should continue to be
When there's no one about in the quad."

"Dear Sir: Your astonishment's odd;
I am always about in the quad.
And that's why the tree
Will continue to be
Since observed by,
Yours faithfully,
God."

Faith solves a lot of futile problems

Re: Theory of relativitity help or similar conundrum's

Well, I've sussed the "tree falling" to my own satisfaction - i.e. that it will cause a vibration in the air waves (same as an oscilloscope for any musical instrument would show) and "noise" is by capability of hearing it. Don't care after that. Not being dismissive in any way, just that I'm very shallow.

In the way that I don't think I'll ever understand the mysticism surrounding "the sound of one hand clapping". It's an expression commonly used as if everyone knows what it means, or is meant to imply. Well I know neither of those - and if Google gets to a trillion pages, I'm still not sure I will...

*Must broaden mind horizons*
*Goes back to knitting*

Knitting is true Zen.

While "the sound of one hand clapping" is probably some pop Californian version...

Nope, cos when I saw the Marmite jar, I immediately wondered how it would affect a game of Jenga if every other one was painted with a dot of Marmite. Bet that'd be annoying

I read this and think "is that normal Jenga, or a variant, like giant kick Jenga"?

it is my own personal theory which I was going to put to Einstein if he were still alive. They tested if "time" slows down/stops when travelling at speed of light (or near to) by sending a clock into space. I argue that humans invented "time" so they wouldn't be late for appointments etc. So how is that a valid test?

It vibrates molecules whether there are any ears around to pick it up or not. So yes.

sorry....... I just can't resist......

KRYTEN: Listen! Can anyone hear anything?

CAT: No.

KRYTEN: Precisely. No one can hear anything! And you know WHY we can't
hear anything?

RIMMER: Why?

KRYTEN: Because there are noooo sounds to hear!

RIMMER: Kryten, isn't it round about this time of year that your head
goes back to the lab for re-tuning?

Which reminds me of:

If you're in a fabia at the speed of light (ok, unlikely you'd be going that slow, but maybe you'd stopped for a milky way) and you turn on the head lights, what happens?

then the beam would be travelling at the same speed as you so wouldn't light up infront of you.

Also....if you were travelling away from a clock that read exactly 2pm at the speed of light then the time would never change (permitting it was big enough for you to see it that far back) because it would be the same bit of light hitting your eyes all the time. That DOESN'T however mean time has stopped, as the person stood infront of the clock can see it ticking away!! Hence my above theory that Einstein was off his rocker!!

Presumably, if you could then exceed the speed of light while travelling backwards it would all go dark as no light could catch you....but according to Einstein NOTHING can go faster than light....

Re: Theory of relativitity help or similar conundrum's

Ok, here's one that used to get us baffled at school. If you drilled a hole in the ground straight down, right through the centre of the earth and out the other side round about Austrailia then dropped a rock down it, assuming it never touched the sides would it stop at the other end at the same height you dropped it from and turn back? Would it keep going back and forth for ever or come to rest in the centre of the earth?

Also if everyone in the world all stood with their arms outstretched like a letter 'T' and all made a line with their fingertips touching end to end, after a few minutes their shoulders would really ache.

As it's the force of gravity acting on the rock, I'd guess it would stop around the centre ... possibly!

Not quite, two beams of light headed towrds each other would be, relative to each other, doing twice the speed of light.

Because dogs are sufficiently thick to accept wearing a leash?
