Thieving Scumbags

So I've spent a lot of today sorting out stuff after discovering at 8:30 this morning (while about to wash the car much like our Ross!)
that some chav scum had had a crack at the shed last night.
Bent the bolt shaft AROUND the padlock, and half-inched my Kona Hahanna MTB from it's place - at the back, CHAINED TO A SIX FOOT uPVC WINDOW FRAME!
They used ladders to reach the security lights all round the house, to turn the PIR sensitivity right down, and point the sensors inwards rather than outwards.
Cheeky Gets.

Course, no one saw anything.........
The rozzers, bless 'em, mistook me for a Nucelar Installation - "do you have security camera's and CCTV?" (not withstanding some of the public systems are really poor qaulity, but if yo ujust wear a Korn Hoodie, what point is a CCTV set up anyway???)

The insurance comp have immediately said "wear and tear" and "policy excess" and tied me to an approved bike supplier...........
Currently trying to find the receipt.
Can't believe I was questioned by the cops and the insurance company about my job, my race, any convictions, any claims, the type of woman I prefer.....ok, i lied about that last one....... Got to, otherwise I'd go out and string up every last chav in sight right now.
How come it's only my gear that gets targeted by "them" around here?

You obviously have impeccable taste in everything you buy. It must be really depressing to have things stolen even when you have done your level best to protect them.

Just got one of the neighbours round earlier this morning.
the lovely police officer lady stuck cards through everyones doors.
Neighbour pointed out to me that a convey of "travellers" had decamped about 3 minutes down the road.........
having had unpleasant dealing with unsavoury types before "liberating" other peoples possessions, I couldn't help but feel this sound was appropriate.......
(not entirely work safe, unless you;ve got headphones or play it really quiet..)

My insurers tried this when I was burgled several years ago, luckily I had a 'new for old' policy so wear and tear wasn't a problem. However with the approved supplier I just refused to use them as they didn't sell the equivalent product (hifi) or anything I was willing to accept. The insurers then just said ok we'll send you a cheque instead! They can't make you go where they want you to just like with car insurance and bodyshops.

Yes, it's a New for Old Policy, but they raised the issue of wear and tear. I'll have to see what they come up with as replacement offering, bearing in mind the bike was used once a week, on-road and kept spotless. But if they mention some Raleigh PoS, they'll get a thick ear........like you said, it has to be an equivalent product..........wonder who is more the Pikey, the scum who nicked it or the insurers?!!

bad news... umm could have been worse, maybe....

Wear and Tear is a hatred of mine, I have all my policies as "new for old" so I only have to worry about excess in such situations...

Hope you get it sorted quickly, and as Eddy says, don't let them tie you to a particular supplier.

Wear and Tear shouldn't be an issue on a new for old policy, I also didn't need receipts just proof I had the item, e.g. the manual. For replacement costs I went to the manufacturer or approved supplier and asked for a written quotation on the equivalent current model. My insurers didn't argue with this and agreed to the amounts quoted.

Interesting........i'm trying to find anything that ties the bike to me, but it's not looking too good at the moment.
I might try to see if the bank or the shop involved might be able to provide supporting evidence.
Out of curiosity Eddy, who was/is the insurer in your case?

Do you have photo's of the bike you could use?

I was (and still am) insured with Abbey National and I have to say I was very impressed with how it was all dealt with once I'd got over the approved supplier issue. The main thing I found helped though was plenty of evidence on replacement costs and get it in writing. I gave documented evidence on replacement costs of every single item. If you're just claiming for the bike I'd suggest getting at least two written quotes to avoid them questioning it. I found shops were only too happy to supply a written quote when I explained it was for insurance purposes and that I would be purchasing a replacment as soon as I was paid out.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I am/was insured with Nationwide when my Kona Caldera got nicked last December. Replacement was supplied from preferred supplier Wheelies.
Luckily they were able to supply Konas and, recognising my extensive upgrades, gave me a Kula (£1250) as a replacement for my Caldera (£850). Pretty good going I thought.

well it's specifically to keep the pikeys/chavs from raiding the small nuclear facility in the back yard..........

Halford's won't issue a duplicate proof of purchase, the swines. Apparently, despite me being the person who purchased it, I might use it to commit fraud.....
However, I contacted my card issuer (on whose account i bought the damn thing) and they've tracked the payment for me, so now I have the exact date, and they'll supply another statement to that effect pro bono, as it's an insurance jobbie. Jolly nice of them.
Halford's are going to get a visit tonight.............

Re:supplier: Wheelies........thats sounds very very familiar...........think that's who they sais they'd get in touch with about replacements.......

Wish me all the best as i go round to halford's rochdale this evening, armed with my other MTB........

Surely if they just stamp it 'DUPLICATE' then there shouldn't be a problem. Sounds typical of my experience with Halfords.
