by the way, it is now an offence to "lock" a phone to a specific network and the phone companies know this but they are ignoring/flouting the law.....

just goes to prove, one law for the haves and one law for the motorist!!

Vodafone/O2 have never been allowed to lock contract phones - T-Mobile and Orange have been allowed to. Both networks are allowed to lock PAYG phones.

They have to supply an unlocking code if requested, but they are allowed to charge a £35 admin fee for doing so...

I can't find anything on that site that says otherwise?

Rob.

Rob,

apologies, if it isn't on that website. I thought it was?

It's something to do with IIRC EU competition rules and regs....perhaps the legals will get back to us tomorrow?

I am sure it is "naughty" to "lock" phones and its perfectly legal to unlock them..............

All of mine have been unlocked using DCT Calc

It's perhaps sneaky but definitely not illegal. The handset you get when you sign your contract is very heavily subsidised by the operator and is not sold as anything other than for use on a particular network.

That said, I always believe that that once you buy something you are 100% entitled to chip/mod/unlock/copy/stick-it-where-you-want it . Legally maybe while a phone is in contract is belongs to the operator - what happens if you stop paying line rental a couple of months in, presumably they are entitled to reclaim your handset? But once out of contract you can do what you want with it.

There's an exception to prove this rule, Sony won a very unusual EU ruling to the effect that it is illegal to sell mod-chips for a PS2, in effect making it illegal to chip a PS2, regardless of whether you actually use pirate software

http://www.trycktill.com/eng/unlock_swe.asp worked for me, although you'll need to press the Union Jack button to put it in English

That's not quite correct. It is illegal to sell the chip but not illegal to fit them. The way round this is to sell the chips blank and then give away the firmware update to make the chip useful.

Right then. What sites should I avoid, lest I be tempted to buy a blank chip and firmware ? I haven't managed to find any, only weird devices to swap discs

I want to give Jane my Motorola Razr.I am T mobile so it is locked. She is O2 PAYG.

Presume the simplest thing to do is buy her a T -Mobile PAYG sim? (doesn't matter if she ends up with a new number)

Yeah or unlock it. Needs a cable solution I think, although there are some guys on Ebay who reckon some can be done by IMEI.

Unlocking should only be £10 from a local outlet. Is Jane on the 02 online plan? (300 texts or 100 mins free) If so she may be better to stay with 02

I went to my local market, I found I paid just £10 and got mine unlocked by someone who knew what they were doing.

If you use £10 a month on top up then the 02 deal is good.

Re: Unlocking phones

A business client has been given a load of phones in relation to his company's contract with Orange. He thinks they are rubbish so he has given me one (Nokia 3120.Basic but seems ok to me)

Once again LOCKED (I am T mobile)

Do I buy an orange pay as you go or will that not work if the actual phone was dished out on a contract?

Otherwise, without visiting funny sites or the market is there a simple way to unlock this phone?

Thanks

Have you tried something like this?

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Mobile-...lculator.shtml

It's free and quite easy to use - i just unlocked a Nokia 7110 from orange and put in a vodafone PAYG sim - works fine. The Only unobvious thing is that i tried the first code generated and got a message back saying "sim restriction off". However, when i put the vodafone sim in, i got "sim not accepted", so I took it out and used the second code. After that it worked.

Re: Unlocking phones

Cheers.Took the £5 at the market option in the end.

Couple of questions though. They had a huge box of little black devices.Plugged one appropriate to the phone into it and it was unlocked.Thought they would have to type a code in!What have they got in these little black boxes?

Second thing. My phone has asked a couple of times 'Is it ok for sim to send message'.I said no.Who would it be to and why??

Off to T mobile site now to see if it recognises the phone I am using.Seems they can somehaow??!

Re: Unlocking phones

The 'pro's' will normally use an unlocker box rather than the less reliable codes.

Re: Unlocking phones

Didn't there used to be a band distinction between the different networks? So an Orange phone would never work on T-Mobile and vice-versa? Has that gone now?

Sorry if late to the party and haven't read the thread, but I posted this:

Hi Folks

You might be interested in the two sites below, which were given out during a BBC feature this morning. This is from memory, so please don't take as gospel.

(1) Free codefinder for unlocking phones. (English: click Union Jack icon.) fl If anyone uses it, maybe they could post complete instructions for us all

http://www.trycktill.com/eng/

(2) To compare mobile costs for abroad:

http://europa.eu.int/information_soc...g/index_en.htm

This part of the TV feature gave hints such as:............ etc

Wasn't so sure about these unlock codes etc available free on the net. Didn't want to screw up my phone so went to These guys. £3.99 well spent.
