Cool This weather is breaking my house

I'm not sure how much my house can take of this weather. Yesterday it had been blowing and raining so much my wooden front gate had actually pushed it's way forward of the catch and jammed. I had to jump over it to get out when I came home I just did a kung foo type kick to get it open and so far it's managed to stay the right side of the catch

This morning as I was slowly waking up about half five I hear a noise downstairs, I bet that's some crap fallen down the chimney i thought. Sure enough I come downstairs to a yucky smell and crap all over the carpet

Just as I thought things couldn't get any worse I go into the front room and hear tap, tap, tap on the inside window sill. The rain has come through the wooden lintel outside above the window and soaked through, gone down my wooden blinds and the window sill is sodden.

Oh yeah, and my attic conversion is my computer room and I can actually feel the wind up here. Thankgod we are having a new roof after Christmas.

Roll on summer
Hey ho!

Re: This weather is breaking my house

It is a bit of a rough spell - I was called out to replace my mum's vanished shed roof with a tarpaulin. It's amazing how rain will capilliary through tiny gaps in vast quantities especially with the wind (venturi effect) assistance. Apart from the new roof, it sounds like you need your chimney swept. It hasn't partially collapsed/lost a pot has it?

Re: This weather is breaking my house

I boarded up my fireplace (for exactly that reason) until I got it swept and a proper cap put on - quote "It'll take a while for it to get that bad again" (It was built in the 30's and I'd be surprised if it'd ever been sorted.)

It's worth getting the right things done in priority terms. I'm sure I've told you about sitting on the throne and the carpet rising in front of me? Yikes. Which turned out to be the through-flow of air from the porch eaves into the interstice cavity and blinkin' awful floorboards (they didn't have tongue and groove in those days

We had hailstones for quite a while this morning, which is weird as it wasn't even cold. They cleaned the outside windows nicely though

Hope it's passed over from you now Pixi and the nice sunshine tomorrow will sort the rest out

Mo

Chimney sweep is booked for next tuesday There's no damage to the pot, we just havn't ever had it swept in thirteen years but booked it because we are looking to replace the fireplace.

Mo, I know what you mean about draughts. We have many gaps that are yet to be filled. We booked a quote for cavity wall insulation and the guy didn't get through the door, he just stood there and said you have no damp proof course so you can't have insulation

We have the great job of putting that insulation stuff down under the floor before we lay a wood floor downstairs. Don't you just love older houses that you thought in the beginning would be a great renovation/investment project!

Re: This weather is breaking my house

The only problem I have had so far is the pilot light on the boiler blowing out.
Oh, and the wife getting back from London on the train due to the overhead
lines coming down in the Milton Keynes area. Currently coming home via
Sheffield. Also had to cook my own T.....

I'll lend you mine
Seriously though, I told my mum we had bought a fire with a remote control, and she just gave me ' that ' look, and said, in her Yorkshire accent ' You lazy bugger'
She's probably right

Re: This weather is breaking my house

Pixi - Hi again and first things first. If I'm not mistaken, they can just "inject" a damp course into the brickwork itself by drilling holes at intervals and extruding whatever it is into them. Think that no house built without a damp course will have one, so there's today's workaround

Re westerdam2 - Streuth! Must do a rethink. Perhaps I'll leave a note that cookies and milk are in the kitchen? Thinking cat flap here, but might need a little more thought...

Re: This weather is breaking my house

Thanks Mo, we will be getting a quote for damp work but have decided to leave all to prepare for next winter.

Mr P has been away training this week and I have spared him the good news of all the repairs he and I will be making when he gets home.

You better hope your Santa has been on the Atkins diet

Oh dear. Goes off to enlarge cat flap and buy low-fat cookies

I hope your house is still standing when Mr P arrives home LOL. Wooden blinds can be washed with a very mild solution of chlorine bleach to avoid mould arriving by the way till they dry out (as can windows, though they should withstand water unless they need repainting or re-oiling.) Sorry Pix, I've gone into Mo-mode again

Re: This weather is breaking my house

Pixi, for a quick, cheap temporary solution to the damp problems, try that tompsons weather seal stuff.

Worked wonders on our house and if you paint it onto the brickwork that covers the wooden lintel (or even the lintel if it is visible) then it will pretty much stop water getting through for a couple of years. That should be enough to see you out for the rest of this rather unpleasent winter.

Re: This weather is breaking my house

The lintel is being sorted with the roof I normally seal it every year before winter but for some reason that job escaped my attention this year
