Whats the best book you've ever read?

Inspired by recent posting about books, I thought I would ask the following….
  • What was the last book you read?
  • What was the last book you bought?
  • Which was the best book/s you have ever read? (you can pick up to 3 books if you cant decide on one)

For me it was ‘When we were young’ (most recently read), and it was the last book I bought too.

The best books I have read were, ‘Surely you are kidding Mr Feynman’, ‘South’ the story of the failed Shackleton expedition and ‘French Revolutions’ by Tim Moore, a daft story of a man travelling the Tour de France Route without the necessary skills or fitness.

Having given those titles, they are 3 of the more recent titles I’ve read so I guess I’d pick a different 3 on a different day (It’s my thread so I can be allowed to be fickle)

Anyone remember the Pan books of horror?

I'm rather fond of

The Count of MonteCristo
The Bird of Dawning

and a whole bunch of other things - hard to pick just one favourite.

Does anyone remember the name of a book about a seagull? It was a Hippy, analogous sort of book, which I read when I was very young. Very Buddhist in it’s message.

I recently read Bill Bryson’s ‘A short history of nearly everything’ and a pretty good read it was too.

I'm impressed with your Thomas Hardy Book too, could never get into him. I think it was because we were force fed his poetry for O level English Lit'

I've read a few issues of Fiesta lately, they are good for me as I like books with pictures.

Re: Whats the best book you've ever read?

Hardy's great, and FFTMC is one of the best. Tess is good too, and The Return of the Native, but I've been trying to finish Jude for years, just can't get the momentum going.

Love Jane Austen too - the films are never as good as the books.

No..you'd never get the pages separated. lol. I dont read these ones to be honest, I think they push the boundries a bit too much. FHM, Loaded, Nuts etc are a bit more tasteful.

The classic Puckoon, by Spine Millington, must rate as one of the funniest books ever written.
