Yes. In 1964 I used to pay 4 shillings a gallon for petrol; my Mercedes 300 did 16mpg (and ran on retreads); and there was no 70 limit.

and the 300 cost about £ 800 which was a 3 x full annual salary

tell that to kids these days!

My first tank of fuel cost £3,50 in 1972 for 14 gallons!!!!! Then there was the first Yom Kippur war!

4 shillings? I dreamed of paying 4 shillings! It had shot up to 5/6d a gallon (5 shillings and sixpence - 27.5p; just over 6p/litre) by the time I started driving three years later...

In 1964 I wasn't even a twinkle in my dad's eye!

Was everything in black and white when you started driving, Denis?

Don't be cheeky, Steve. My first car was blue; the 2nd and 4th - both Mercedes - were black. And they all came with sound.

When did motoring stop being fun? I squeeze about 80% fun into my journey's into work... the other 20% are being wasted filling up with petrol .

You either have a very short drive to work, or you take a long time filling up...

On the whole I enjoy driving too - although I have a 3 minute commute to work, and apart from that don't really drive anywhere at times when it's "busy"...

Unless you average 60mph door to door, making the distance 3 miles, surely that journey is walkable, Steve?

It's about a mile and a half, maybe two from my house to work, Denis. Unfortunately one section of road is lacking in the pavement department so it's not a good idea to try and walk along it... plus without the car I couldn't come home at lunch times!

Once we've moved (should hopefully complete in a week or two) it'll be about a mile, and I probably will walk most days

Motoring can still be fun... for instance a few weekends ago I was up at 6.30am and off round the Chesterfield/Bakewell/Cat & Fiddle route with hardly any other traffic! The Cat & Fiddle might be a 50 zone but its still damn good fun doing 50 round all the twisty bits! Maybe its just how you look at fun... if fun is going fast in a straight line then motoring is not as it used to be (Zzzzzzz), however if fun is quick accelaration and handling round the corners then its just as good, better in some cases as the cars handle much better these days!

My first car was a 1963 Triumph Herald. Accelertion? 0-60 took about half a day. Handling? Opposite lock round traffic islands at 25 mph! The tyres howled in protest and were bald after about 5000 miles.

Still petrol was 28p per gallon and Road Tax £25 per year. Insurance was £30 but I was still at school.

I have just driven from Helsby to Moreton Hall; all 'A' roads beautiful countryside hardly a car on the road (50mpg in a Furby vrs).

There is still good driving out there to be had.

I remember lusting after a 205 BHP Cossy 'cos it was the dogs blocks, now every shopping trolley has more, how the bar has been raised in 10 year's.
When im in my 40's 200 BHP will be a Grannys car

Ha, just re-read my original post, I meant to say "before they invented the Renault Megane Scenic", and all the other Spazz-Wagons of that ilk. I know that's not terribly PC, but there you go .....

The scenic's a good car designed for a purpose. However, I remember when you could buy petrol on gallons and not litres. Now what is the point of that MPG but we will only sell in Litres

The A41 between Kings Langley and Tring (in Herts.) is good fun. Fast dual carriageway, no cameras and very rarely see the cops. There's also two long inclines (at Kings Langley and Bourne End) where my Octavia Vrs leaves most challengers for dead - and long straights where, if you were so inclined, you could exceed the speed limit by an indecent amount (so I'm told)!
