My mate works there - he lent me the counter for the photo. It read 2000+ at some points and he just said 'walk fast here' at some in some areas.

2000+ sounds impressive, but I haven’t the foggiest what this means in real terms. What would be a reading on a typical sunny day in Manchester for instance? (OK sunny and Manchester in the same sentence is not typical but you get my drift)

It is amazing how quickly people have been allowed back into the area (I say this with absolutely no knowledge of what I am talking about

). Is there not a risk of radioactive dust floating about still?

I'm not sure what 2000 means (but I think it was counts per minute). I do know 'clean areas' have a count of 12 - so you get the idea.

I know for sure that if this was in Western Europe, no-one apart from fully kitted cleanup engineers would be allowed in. For sure, there is dust - but the information I was given "don't pick your nose or tread on the moss" had to do.

It is very different in the Ukraine to here.

In an average year your dose will be about 2-2.5 Milli Sieverts, I'm not sure what scale that one is reading though. But in areas like Aberdeen and Cornwall you will have a higher dose due to radon and granite etc.

For any calander year the maximum an adult male should receive as a radiation worker should be no more than 20 Millisieverts. (Woman is about 12-13 iirc because of your ovarymajigs being very attractive to radiation Ionising Radiation).

Could possibly be Grays as that is the absorbed dose measurement but 2000 is a fair dose.

If it was going up and down it sounds more like a counter rather than a dose metering device. Personally, I'd want to be carrying the whole dosimetry shebang whilst I was there!

To put that in perspective, the annual 20mSv limit is 200 times smaller than 4Sv (50% chance of dying within months) dose typically quoted. And in the UK, I think people work to lower limits than the Regs allow.

If you are sensible (shower when you leave and be careful in the apartment blocks - lift shafts are exposed), then yes it is safe. There are group tours sometimes - they start in Kiev at the main bus/train station. Walking through a huge empty city with not a single human in it apart from yourself is a VERY strange experience. Sorta like what the end of the world might be like.
