At 272mb I think I'll wait for my SUS server to pick it up.
I'm in no hurry to spend a few days seeing what SP2 breaks anyway.

I see this particular update is for IT professionals and developers only. Does that mean it is unsuitable for XP home users or just that it contains bells and whistles which are not needed?

That's a lot bigger than the filesizes I'd heard about before. Are you certain that was the home computer version and not for networks?

LINK

This is the Microsoft site that BBC online were linking to yesterday. It does say a CD version will be available to order shortly and some magzines will be carrying it too.

SP2 is aimed at all users and includes enhanced security features such a a better firewall and a pop-up blocker, in addition to fixes for code exploits used by recent virus types. Personally I'm gonna wait a couple of weeks for people to start finding the bugs !

Try downloading Bootvis from microsoft and following their instructions to optimize boot performance.

Yes, it's a monstrous files size, and it is only intended for IT pro's looking after a network environment.
For the avergage joe user, it says a smaller, more appropriate download will be available via Windows update soon.
I'm tempted to go for the biggie, but on the other hand, I don't want it to scupper my home WiFi network.......
Still, never does any harm to have it i guess........
Big or small? Daddy or chips?

If you were deploying it across a large network you'd be better off setting up an SUS server to download and distribute it (plus all the other patches that get released) and for a home user you may as well wait for windows update to pick it up.

The only point of this early full release is so that people like me can start testing it and see what it breaks.

Considering that this is only the second Service Pack for XP, and it's 2 years since the previous one, it's a bit unrealistic IMHO to talk of "seeing what it breaks", "start testing", "let other users find the bugs" etc.

There won't be another one for a good while, and it will already have been tested by thousands of beta testers, so you either want it or you don't. They won't suddenly change the contents next week. OK there may be a few hotfixes over coming weeks and months, but SP2 will be SP2, and it'll be the standard for a while.

OK, I downloaded all 272Mb last night. Do I ignore Microsoft's warning that this is for IT professionals etc and install it on my home PC or wait for the slimmed down home user version?

The betas and RCs of SP2 did cause quite a few problems , and no matter how thoroughly they test it in house there is no way that they can have tried it with every possible combination of hardware and software. I'm sure many of the problems have been fixed but not all of them

Its realistic to expect a few problems when its first installed which is why I'm testing my machine before deploying it to see what may need to be done or changed.

If you have downloaded it now you may as well go ahead and install it.
The warning was really to stop you downloading more than you needed as the full installer contains a lot of code that you won't need.

Well its in and running on my machine now without any obvious problems.

A lot of the new features aren't essential for us as being on a business network e already have plenty of security already.

For home users with a bit of technical knowledge it should be very handy though.

I downloaded and installed it on my free-standing home PC a couple of days ago. No obvious ill effects yet. It was 266 MB though. If you got yours from an unofficial source you might want to check that it's genuine first!

See this article at Neowin.net to help you make your mind up.

I have a feeling that SP2 is downloading as I type (10 minutes, 36% complete, a good clue) via auto update.

Any suggestions before I hit the 'Install Now' button apart from the usual clean up before installing any software?

And if this knocks me back to the start of 'Soldiers. Heroes Of World War II' Mr. Gates will be getting a very stern letter. Just about the trickiest game I've ever played.

I took the plunge a week or 2 ago and used a streamlined copy to install from scratch. Hasn't broken anything unusual yet, but I have yet to try some 'exotic' hardware, so can't comment just yet.

I loaded the 'big' version 2 weeks ago. Interestingly, it hasn't recorded its presence in the installed updates. No problems initially, but I was very worried when I found out that Norton AntiVirus autoprotect along with email scanning had been turned off a number of times without me being aware that this had happened. Whatever the problem was has now resolved itself - possibly with an update from Symantec. I also found that I was unable to access an internet bank account I had previously been using without any problems. The bank has since applied an XP SP2 fix but still has some fine-tuning to do to get their service to work correctly. Doubtless other glitches will surface...
