Thumbs down Work Experience Week

Well, a few months back I was asked by a lady who works for one of my clients, if her daughter could be placed with me for two weeks for her work experience, so being the accommodating person that I am I said of course she can

Well, 4/5ths of the first week in and what can I say…..

Monday, I discussed lunch breaks with her, I said I didn't mind if she took 1/2 hour or even 1 hour for her lunch, yesterday she took 1hour 30 mins, today 1 hour 10 mins

Tuesday I am working in my office concentrating on what I am doing then I hear a ‘thud thud thud’ in the background, quick trip to the kitchen results in seeing her mobile phone/MP3 player on the table virtually bouncing with the bass….

Is it me or does she seems to be constantly eating or texting or receiving texts

I asked her today if she found what she was doing to be boring and she said ‘yeah’ She then went on to say that she only really came to me because her mum wanted her to and she had actually wanted placing at a school near to her home

I don’t think I’m going to last through this week, let alone another week of her. If we do make it to the end of next week I think we are both going to be scared for life!!!!!!

I will say though, she seems to be making a good job of what I have given her to do, which incidentally, is not the boring mundane rubbish given to most work experience people.

And contrary to what I have been told to do, I will be paying her for what she has done.

Rant over

She becoming a dab hand at sage accounts production for limited companies? Its what I'm attempting to learn about now.

What will her "fee income" be compared to her work experience wages?

Re: Work Experience Week

I did two bouts of work experiance. Firstly I worked in a really cool electric guitar shop in Plymouth, and I had a great time. Had to do some crap like re-string A LOT of guitars, but for the most part I had a laugh. Got some positive feedback, so all in all

The second bit was in a hospital where I shadowed a few doctors in the various departents. I spent a lot of time in surgery, which was fantastic! I saw hip replacements, full masectomy etc etc. At this point I was deluding myself that I would be get the grades to become a Doctor. Did not happen I am afraid, although did give me a good grounding for the work I did for a pharmasutical company a few years later.

You are not doing the girl any favours by giving her the impression that this sort of thing is acceptable in the work place. What is annoying about work experiance is that everyone asks what you want from the future etc, and at that point in your life you cannot see past the desire to text your mates back.

Would it be possible for you to offer her a task that involves creativity rather than boring things. It will make her feel apreciated rather than a dog's body.

Re: Work Experience Week

I use dto be the one who got the job of looking after the work experience kids The MD thought it was a good idea because I was the youngest and would be able to relate to them easily

Generally the ones we got were OK but then, they were with us by choice. When it come sto lunch breaks - make them do what every one else in the office does! After all it is work experience not a school trip.

I agree with Emily's comments...... find her something involving to do - even if it doesnt really need to be done. When she's done it, tell her how good it is and by the end of the week you can pretend you've sent it to a customer/client etc.

Also, dont talk about school or exam grades etc. unless she wants to.

Re: Work Experience Week

We have a work experience lad in this week.

He seems pretty eager to find work to do and makes a real effort.

Only trouble is he also found my bottle of coke in the fridge and drank the lot.

I did my work experience with AutoExpress magazine, was pretty cool, got to go round Thruxton in a Honda NSX on one of the days when they were also doing a GTI Group test. Was only a week long "back in my day" though.

Tell me the bottle was laced with laxatives and it was an elaborate set up?

Re: Work Experience Week

I have 1/2 work scrotes at the moment for two weeks.

1 is good but the other is completely useless. I have had to read him the riot act about downloading very tallented animated images at work, and also told him to go and not come back after he did this for the second time.

When they are interested it's good this kid has no interest and is probably just here because his school said to be.

I am an accountant by profession so finding a task that is creative would be a tad difficult to say the least

I am not making her feel like a dog's body (can’t remember actually saying that either ) the work that she is doing is something that I would do myself and have no qualms in doing either.

I could have made her feel like a dog's body by treating her as every other work experience person I have met during my working life, by getting her to make the drinks for everyone, file copious amount of papers, answer phones etc, but I wanted to give her something to make her use her brain She has already passed her math’s and IT GCSE's, so she's a bright girl

And Jason, do you really think I would charge her time out???

My incorrect assumption. It is very hard on work experience because there is very little that you have enough knowledge to do competently.

How is she doing today?

Re: Work Experience Week

The last work experience student we had working here was many moons ago. She left her fingernails (real not fake !) stuck in a band of rubber compound going around a calender mill......told her she should have listen properly at her H+S induction..the guy who came the year before her, left behind the tip of his right thumb after putting it into a paper guillotine and letting go of the blade...

....nobodys been back since..

Re: Work Experience Week

we had a bloke from works kid in for two weeks, he spent 1 week with a plumber, 3 days with a carpenter and 2 days with me doing electrics.

i got him to do as much as possible(by that i mean the same work as i am doing and not semding him to the van/shops and getting him to carry everything) he actually seemed interested and got on with things if he was very quiet.

i gave him excellent marks on his report sheet and my supervisor asked if i did it because i knew his dad but you can't mark them down if they've done nothing wrong

Thats my referencing colour and also used on top of black, when I've solved my own query points to show I had queried and solved on my own.

Wonder if we'll be getting any work experience ladeez in to our office?
