| Briskodian | Are you cool or just a tight git? Just a bit bored of reading bits about skoda being the 'economy 'choice for buyers. The best 'bargain' car.The car for 'those on a budget' No it blooming isn't! Its not a cheap range of cars and having to pay more to insure my vRS than my Audi A4 1.8t quattro doesn't back that up either! I like to think people are buying them because they are actually becoming the trendy choice of motor and one that is good to boot. So were you out shopping for an 'economy car'when you bought yours? Were you sniffing around the bargain basement cars like a nice proton or a chevy daewoo? I thought nothing of the sort.Just loved the look of the octy RS and think the range looks rather classy. Sooner they lose the budget tag the better. (rant over, just read another group test and the word 'budget ' irks me ) |

| If I was a tight git I'd sell the Skoda and buy the 1.8 Vectra off my mate, who got it for £300 from an auction. I'd sooner have a nice quality car and mould it in the fashion I desire. ![]()

| But surely compared to the equivalent car in the VW/Audi range, they are cheaper and to achieve this they've compromised on seat/dash materials as well as equipment (or at least available optional equipment)? Chris

| Octy II is definitely a big improvement again over Octy I - no offence intended to those with Octy I I still cant get over how absolutely rubbish the standard ICE in the Octy I is though, fair enough when it was introduced perhaps but no excuse imho as even the cheapest Furby model comes with a pretty decent set of speakers as standard, and although the radio/cassette thing isnt very reliable according to the dealer, it sounds ok. The Octy I 'Ambiente' was plain awful, sound-wise. Rest of the car - not bad but the basic spec is indeed that. For the amount of car you get it's good value (sorry). The VW range next - I always feel it's overpriced, but they're nice enough cars too. There aren't many 'properly rubbish' cars out anymore, as those manufacturers have been bought out/gone bust...

| Skoda's are certainly not cheap when compared with the likes of Ford and Vauxhall, especially not when discounts are taken into account. Skoda's are a budget VAG though, they are a cheaper way to get quality VAG mechanicals and reliablity without paying Volkswagon and Audi prices. You certainly get a lot more spec and space for the same price Octy to a Golf. There are places where you can see the cost cutting though, dash plastics, interior trim and audio just being examples. But then I've never had a car where I've left the audio standard anyway. ![]() I bought all ours because they were good products with proven reliability and known customer satisfaction. After owning a 156 Selespeed Veloce for 20 months you appriciate these things. ![]() I also like the smug "in the know" image of the Skoda brand. Those that know about cars rate them highly and those that know nothing still joke about them. Very much like Subaru's image in the late eighties/early nineties. Cheers Lee

| I knew I wanted a estate car, I was looking for a astra estate to be honest,( my last car was a astra & i was happy with it, it just wasn't estate ) I had been looking for nearly 12 months ( & the longer I looked the more I saved ). I knew I wanted air con, I didn't want a base model, I wanted soemting decent. I then came across this octy, I liked it, it fitted the bill, plus my brother had got one & loved his,Also being abit larger than the astra was a plus to. Also this site played a large part in it, I knew any problems & I had so may people on here with all their info, now that was just great. got my Bro. to check it & it was fine so bought it. Since them my parents have also bought a new octy estate, we love them.

| Done the VW Golf thing on the Mk 2, 3 and 4 and honestly honestly think my Fab vRS is better built than any of them. In fact, having owned many other makes (Ford, Vauxhall, Renault etc etc blah) I can honestly say the Fab is better......by a mile. JUST my opinion and probably not shared by others but in my experience (and that is all any of us can go on) the myth of VW being superbly built and reliable is just that, a myth. Someone posted a thread earlier about the R32.....lovely fast car etc etc BUT for me it'll probably spend a lot of its time in a garage.

| I looked at allsorts before buying my Octy vRS, I wanted something that wasn't run-of-the-mill and was a bit of an extroverts car. Yellow vRS fits the bill perfectly.

| When I bought my Octy vRS I was looking for a more powerful car than what I had at the time. Initially I was looking at the VW Golf 2.3V5 until I saw that the 1.8 20V Turbo was just as powerful and more efficient. I started looking around for cars that used this engine and decided that it was down to a choice between the 1.8T powered Seat Leon Cupra and the Octy vRS however, to make it a fair test I also looked at the 1.9TDi PD as an alternative engine choice. After some deliberation I discounted the diesel as I have always wanted a turbocharged petrol and I knew that if I had bought the diesel I deep down I would have wanted the 1.8T. After test driving the Octy vRS I was absolutely blown away and that was it - I knew that I had to have this car It is absolutely stunning and I could even half con myself into believing that it is practical as well The looks on people's faces (especially those in BMWs) when they get overtaken like they are standing still by, horror of horrors - a Skoda , is hilarious ![]() So in summary: am I cool or just a tight git? Neither really I just wanted a quick car that was a bit different and that had "some" tuning potential ![]()

| I reckon you made the right choice - the PD is great if you're after a car that you can drive without too much fuss most days, it returns decent MPG.The 1.8T, hmm - It is an excellent engine and it's very fast. I'm amazed you kept it standard for this long though Did you buy it new in '02?

| I've only had the car since Feb this year - back in 2002 I was still at uni and obviuosly could not have afforded the insurance let alone the car If I can find a 'sympathetic' insurance company* I will get the car Custom-Coded - then the fun begins *due to my age (24) this is a damn hard thing to find - most of them either laugh or quote a premium that takes the pi$$ Maybe next year ![]()
