Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

Do you really need to ask?

For the job I do i should be being paid 20k approx.

I get a lot less than that - so I am under payed.

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

I know I could get a good £7k - £10k more in the private sector if I wanted to, but to be honest, there's more to a job than just the pay. I currently work 3 miles down the road, have my part time university degree fully funded and that suits me just fine while I'm studying.

Underpaid? Yeah, by industry standards, but that's local government for you!

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

I earn way more than I should, and way more than most people think too.

Considering the job I do is basically unskilled (apart from having a driving licence) my wages are comparable to a highly skilled proffesional, and in a lot of cases, higher.

Most people think cabbies are on a low wage and in some areas they are, but I'd be willing to bet there aren't many people earning what I do in Eastbourne (apart from all the other cabbies).

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

I'm ashamed to admit i get paid a stonking good wage for what I do.
to put it into perspective, when I started working 6 years ago, fresh out of Uni, i got 23K a year.
Which made certain members of the family, who had many years experience in a skilled area take notice as I was earning about 4K more than them. Needless to say, they now earn substantially more than me.

But I get other perks - no fixed hours (bit double-edged, can work for our against, usually for, me) over five weeks paid leave, plus can carry about a week over if not used..........free gadgets, software and paper as my home office is considered an extension of the office office. It's pretty cushti.

Just as a matter of interest ...is anyone prepared to put on here what they do earn in the way of basic pay?

I am on £9.50 an hour as an electrician that works out at £19760 a year before tax or £15132 after tax

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

I work as a contract instrument designer in the petrochem industry. Its a small company I do work for, the rates here are about £7 - £9/Hr less than I could get if I were to work in Aberdeen.
The benefits are I'm only five minutes from the office and its a really laid back place to work

I am a mechanical engineer - just got a pay rise ( ) taking me to £25500 per year.

I probably could be earning more than this but I am happy in my job and there is more to life than money

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

I got about £35k last year which isn't too bad for my type of IT.

I probably could earn more if I moved jobs but I like it where I am at the mo

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

I earn £25.000 /year.

I recently finished an IT-education here in Denmark, and I now work for a pretty large IT-service company.

As it is now, I´m probably not worth every penny, as there is so many systems to learn, and that is quite difficult. For now, I work at 3 different places, and have from the beginning, but it will probably end up being 5 places.

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

I think I am underpaid for what I do, and the responsibilities I now have. But, as mentioned there is more to life than money. Since getting these responsibilities I kind of like the job, as its now a challenge. 6 months ago it was getting very mundane and boring. Its much more fun running the office, and doing your old job at the same time.

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

Probably a little underpaid considering the job I do and the impact on the company in terms of profitability if I were to do it wrong.

If I got paid 0.1% commission I could have retired a long time ago...

I am interested to know what Gwilo does, as I started in my current job as a graduate with 2 years experience and on 18k when he was earning 23k!!

6 years on I am pushing up near the 40% tax band (with overtime).

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

When I was a permanent employee I was under paid.....my salary increase over 5 years amounted to less than £1.5k.........p*ss poor IMHO.

Division closed down now and I'm contracting. Hourly rate is industry standard and probably quite good for someone who is on their first contract.

Is it a good wage? Yes.

Am I worth more? Absolutely!

When I standard working....oh...about 15 years ago....my starting salary as a grad was £14.5k......quite good at the time.

I work in mobile comms.

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

Im horribly over paid for what I do ... having said that I work in the City and there are plenty of other people in the City that earn loads more than me for doing even less . Working in the City is a real eye opener and so many people generally live in a fantasy world grumbling about pay when on excellent salaries doing jobs that aren't that difficult. Its all pretty sickening particularly since I often look at people doing what I consider "important" jobs for the future of the country such as teaching, medical work etc and am stunned with how little they are valued (both in terms of pay and respect). IMHO the priorities in this country are a mess

Won't say my salary but even the benefits package (non-contrib pension of 15%, free BUPA, free life & travel insurance, share options, bonus etc) is worth quite a lot.

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

I'm on just under 19k (Before tax ) for the job i currently do at the moment - which is an IT Trainer.
I know for a fact I could earn more in the private sector, but the problem I have is that my Boss knows I'm more than capable of working as a techie too - meaning he wants me to keep doing work for him when he thinks I'm not busy.

I dunno, if I had both the training and support descriptions in my job description, I'd probably be on a lot more than I currenty am - of course the suits don't see that, and take offense when you point out that you don't really have to do this work - you're just doing it to help them out

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

I also work in IT, have done for the past 13 years. Currently into performance testing IT systems.

I am on a good wage, it has allowed my wife to stay at home for the past 5 years to bring up our little girl, and she now has the chance to start up her own company.

It makes the daily slog more bearable knowing I can support all that - still gets pretty boring sometimes!

I found that until I got a recent lucky break, there is a ceiling at about £25k for mechanical engineers.

I used to think I was acuratly paid for the job I do but recently I think I'm under paid (50hr+ weeks recently)

Re: Are you over/Under payed..???

I am a software engineer. I believe I am slightly underpaid and am probably worth about a 10% pay rise based on my job description at the next pay review.

I also do a lot of work outside of my job description and am hoping to get a lucky break that might enable me to get intpo an area I enjoy more and a bit more money.

Money isn't everything, however, but what i do want is to be able to have the lady stay at home with any kids i may have if that is what she wants and not have to worry about money. Oh and a new octy would be nice too
