You should see some of them.

Actually it is a delicate balance of shutter speed. Too quick and everything freezes, too slow and it ends up all out of focus.
Bit too much of that yesterday.

I was hoping our resident pro would have been along with a few pointers by now because I definitely need them.

Re: As it was sunny, today I visited Goodwood....

Until the resident pro turns up, here are some suggestions that help me.

Set yourself up and stand with the camera and lens pointing at the place where you want the vehicle to be when you take the picture. Now only twist your body at the hips to find the target to track. Follow it until it reaches your first position and then squeeze the trigger. Most important, FOLLOW THROUGH with the camera.

You can actually turn of the autofocus using this method. like the old days before autofocus was invented

Keep a low enough shutter speed to allow some blurring of the wheels and background. 1/250th or lower would be good once you get good at the technique.

If you use Canon IS lenses, consider putting the Image Stabilization on mode 2.

The following only by way of an example was shot at 700mm hand held at 1/250th Second.

This was shot at 600mm in the Isle of Man

This next one was shot with a very low shutter speed to introduce deliberate blur. A blip of flash then brought out some sharp elements, look at the riders eyes...

I like the 2 bike shots, particularily the Isle of Man one. What kind of shutter speed for that one? I'm guessing fast?

I guess the problem with some of my shots is that I am trying for a not quite head on shot. I get portions of the car in focus but not the important bits like the number plate.
I think it is a lack of depth of field?

I think I need more practise but until then back to the day job.

That photo of the Merc at 700mm is insane, such an excellent photograph. Plus I really like the dirt bike shot aswell, it really captures the action.

I took the photo below the last time I was at the Nurburgring, I was pretty pleased with it but now want to get a better lens and get some more photos like it.

I take it you have moved from Ewhurst then James. With all of that extra commission you will be able to buy what you want

Re: As it was sunny, today I visited Goodwood....

I left Ewhurst late last year and went to a big Vauxhall garage (worst decision ever) and could only last 6 months and then came here to Allams and all is well. Nice to be back with Skodas again!

All being well I should be the proud owner of a D300 and a 70-200 VR f2.8 by the end of October. Really looking forward to next years Nurburgring trips!
