Driving assesments etc

Hi,

SWMBO's started driving like Carlos Sanz again, and doing it whilst dumping the clutch

Does anyone know of any good assesors, or tacks days (like rockingham, silverstone - style and control rather than speed/racing) where driving style is assessed and commented on by a pro?

Unless anyone here's a thrill seaker. Passenger footwell has imaginary brake fitted by moi!

Re: Driving assesments etc

Highly recommend Don Palmer's creative car control course (Don Palmer: Driving Guru and Masterful Coach) which should allow her to experience controlling a car "on the limit" and also how key it is to use all the controls smoothly and sympathetically. Andy Walsh at Car Limits also comes highly recommended. Failing that, most circuits have a race school that she may be able to get some instruction from.

At the other end of the spectrum, if she wants to improve her road driving IAM and RoSPA are worth investigating, but I'm not sure with have the same fun factor as hooning around an airfield

Anything a bit cheaper than £400?

I appreciate I'd not get a full day for that

Carlimits will do a 4-person day for a couple of hundred and they'll find the other 3 people so you don't have to worry about that. I guess it comes down to what sort of thing you had in mind for her? Airfield/Track/Road?

Do you happen to know if Don's courses are done in your own car or a course car? I quite fancy his Advanced course, but would probably get more out of it in the Furby that the RWD / 4WD cars featured on the site...???

Re: Driving assesments etc

The 1 day Creative Car Control/Limit Handling course is carried out in your own car at Bruntingthorpe (although Don may try and encourage you to hire a 911 GT3 for the day ). The Masterclass at Anglesea is done in either a low powered BMW or Avensis I think.

I did my limit handling course in the Mondeo

Btw, there isn't really a distinction between the levels of car control days - Don will tailor the course to what you want to do

Anything that will stop her kangerooing away from roundabouts by dropping the clutch in say 3rd, coasting, then dumping it followed by applying some power.

I've even tried the "everytime you dump the clutch, a kitten...." line, but no joys.

Oh, and taking the racing line around 2 lane roundabouts.

Re: Driving assesments etc

Nowt wrong with the racing line on roundabouts (provided it's safe and not going to cause any confusion)

IAM/RoSPA might be a good start, but these will probably seem a bit too dull and rigid compared to what she thinks she's capable of. I hear excellent things about Ride Drive Ltd UK, Advanced Driving Course, Defensive Driving, Fleet Driving Course, Advanced Motorcycle Course so they might be worth a call or maybe have a chat with Mark Kendrick (Bespoke Driver Training) who is an excellent driver and coach
