HPC Young Driver's Day 2008

The High Performance Club will be running another Young Drivers Day on July 19th, 2008. This is open to those who are aged 26 years or less and hold a full driver's licence, and are not already HPC members. The aims of the day are to:
  • Promote awareness of driving skills at advanced levels
  • Encourage the participants to develop their own skills
  • Have fun - young drivers and coaches
Our first such event in 2006 was very well received by the participants, as was the event in 2007. Some of the comments received from the participants:
  • "Thank you for such an informative and entertaining day..it has really lifted my enthusiasm for driving"
  • "It was great finally getting to meet some people who enjoy their driving"
  • "The lectures were really thought provoking..and as for the demo runs, what a joy!"
  • "A really useful day, hard to improve"
The day will be a mixture of demonstration drives by HPC members, participants' observed drives, and lectures and workshops, given by a mix of HPC instructors, police advanced instructors and specialist experts. The emphasis will be positive and informative, aiming at giving participants insight into how they can take their driving on to new levels.
Places are restricted to 40, and preference will be given to those who have not attended before. A reserve list will be held of previous participants who may wish to attend if there are spare spaces. Location will be Oxfordshire.

To book your place, use the online form at Young Drivers Day

If you're marginally over 26, then there is some leniency so it's still worth booking if you're interested in going. I'm sure those from here who attended last year will be happy to offer their experiences of the day and whether they found it useful/relevant to their own driving.

I may be attending again this year, but please don't let that put you off

Chris

Re: HPC Young Driver's Day 2008

I've been booked on since last year on grounds that I couldn't make it and it saved their accountant writing me out a cheque!

Really looking forward to it!

I went last year and thoroughly recommend it to anyone! Really changed the way I think about driving, and I may even try go again if there are enough spaces left for people who've done it before.

Yeah, I hear you're too old Lynn

Not that I can talk, but might have to see if it's fairly quiet what the policy is of turning up even if just randomly.

Re: HPC Young Driver's Day 2008

Not usually one to grumble but...

What's the basis of the age restriction? I didn't learn to drive until I was nearly 25 and even now I'm not quite 29 but a bit more than 'just' over the limit. However that's only 4 yrs experience, which is quite limited really; I'm a 'young' driver even if I'm not young. Is the age limit at that level to catch drivers before they have 'matured' or before they've too much personal driving experience? I'm firmly in the second camp but over-age.

Sorry, I didn't mention this last year but I was busy getting married

Re: HPC Young Driver's Day 2008

I'm not sure why 26 was picked, but I suspect it's an age where people have a good few years experience behind them, whilst also still being quite impressionable/receptive. Or maybe it's just arbitrary. As I mentioned in my first post, there is some leniency so my advice would be to apply and see if you're accepted. Last year I believe around 30 people attended so the remaining 10 places could have easily been filled by slightly less young drivers if they were on the standby list.

And no, Colin, the Fabia vRS is not high performance, but luckily the high performance refers to the drivers

Re: HPC Young Driver's Day 2008

Thanks, I'm tempted but don't know what I'll be doing next month never mind in July. When do we have to book it by, or is it just a case of first come, first serve?

It will be on a first come first served basis so it's a gamble whether the 40 spaces will fill up. Last year, iirc, there were a few drop-outs towards the end which meant that there were spaces available for late-bookers.

Just a quick bump for this thread.

Tom's right, the cost of the day is £30 and for that you get around 3 hours of coaching from an HPCer or two, 4 presentations, lunch and all the coffee/tea you can drink throughout the day.
