Re: Just passed my IAM

Congratulations

I was surprised how relaxed the RoSPA test was, certainly far less formal than my driving test, and that there was lots of scope for discussion and some coaching along the way. Can't remember if you get a written report with IAM but I found that really useful too!

What have you got your sights on next?

Looking at becoming an observer with the IAM. This course has really made me enjoy driving again.

Not quite that bad but I had to wait 9 weeks between puting in for the test & finally getting a date. Theres a lot of First Responders doing the coures in my area at the min though so that might have something to do with it.

Re: Just passed my IAM

I don't think putting in for the test at the start of the summer helps either as it seems the examiners are either on holiday or snowed under from being on holiday and playing catchup! Mine took about 8 weeks to come through I think which was painful, but gave me lots of time to practice.

Good on you for looking into becoming an observer and I'm sure you'll be able to pass on some of your enthusiasm to new associates.

Not sure if you've encountered it but Advanced Driving UK :: The Advanced Driving UK Forum is an excellent resource with lots of very knowledgeable people, including advanced police drivers and instructors. I'd highly recommend attending one of their driving days if you get the chance and there's one near you.

If I may, when just having passed it, "IAM" should be read as "I Am!" Well done. <thumbup>

Of course, it does mean that you can't bask in the glory for too long as you have to use your enhanced skills to look out for peeps like me

Re: Just passed my IAM

Congratulations!

I did my 2nd observed run at the weekend. My test should be sometime in late October. I'm also thinking of becoming an observer once I've done my test as it seems like there's not much young blood in our local IAM group, there are a few youngsters learning but as soon as they pass their tests thats the last the group sees of them, which is a shame really.

I guess it depends how you look at it. If you want to give something back to the group and inject some young blood, then I quite agree with you and being an observer is very worthwhile However, If you want to further your own driving once you've passed the test the IAM/RoSPA offer very little in the way of options (in fact RoSPA claim that their Gold standard is the highest civilian award an advanced driver can hold! ).

I mainly did my RoSPA as a stepping stone to "greater things" and with only limited time available I'm not able to offer my services as an observer (not that they'd want me ) and continue improving my own driving, so I selfishly chose the latter. Maybe things will change at a later date, but currently I'm limited to offering one off tasters for people to get them hooked and then sending them to their local groups for more formal/structured coaching.

Re: Just passed my IAM

That's good news, Paul!

Not an observer, but if you fancy a run out to brush up on anything before your test give me a shout and I'll sort out a route

Re: Just passed my IAM

Sunday might be workable, although I'm on call so it would have to be around the Andover area again. Let me check my diary and see what I've got on...
