ANPR or speed camera?

In Thornaby the other day I went past a white high top Daf (LDV??) with the four windows in the back doors, only as I got really close did I notice two cameras in the top two windows

The cameras looked like the cheap LED ones you get off Ebay with the LEDs all around the outside, obviously only much bigger. When i've spotted these things before the windows have been open, van marked up etc.

I went past him doing just under 40mph in a 30, have I caught him having a kip or do they not need markings and now have cameras that work through the glass??

Re: ANPR or speed camera?

Sounds like ANPR to me. There's often an ANPR van at Bluewater and is exactly as you describe.

Edit: Beaten by Fezboy. Interesting link posted, thanks!

Re: ANPR or speed camera?

Looking at that Speed camera link, I thought all speed cameras had to have a sign notifying motorists that a speed camera was ahead?
Apparently, IIRC, there was a big hoohaa about it a couple of years back.
If thats the case, then the speedcamera vans are breaking the law themselves by not advertising the fact they are there.
I agree with ANPR vans though, get the uninsured chavs off the road and crush their little Corsas and Saxos.

Re: ANPR or speed camera?

To add a couple of things.

Speed cams dont have to be advertised but if the local camera partnership wants to retain the money from fines then they have to stick to certain guidlines. BUT there is no actual law saying they must stick to the guidlines.

Also, laser and radar guns cannot be operated through glass, so this one seen sounds like an ANPR van.

I was thinking that also, from previous knowledge, though there might be different rules for councils who've chosen to decriminalise (do their own policing and get money rather than issuing points). That said, if a sign does indeed need to be displayed, seemingly the law has no jurisdiction over the weather in case said sign is blown parallel to the carriageway

Bottom line to me is that one should drive within the limits or be prepared to pay. If it's an entrapment style gotcha, dispute it, as it's unlikely you'll be the only one.
