Anyone had this problem with their dog?

Lately Princess has been suffering with problems with her eyes. It is not all the time, but esspecially in the morning she looks really bad. The underneath red bits look really angry and seems to cover loads of the eyes.

I am not sure if it is gravity and all those ears taking a tole on her face or something, but I want to know what is wrong.

I am going to take her to the vets, but if anyone knows of a simple remedy or any tips in the mean time, please let me know.

If you could post some better pictures I can ask SWMBO who works in a vets - can't really make out what you're describing on those photos

Re: Anyone had this problem with their dog?

I know the photos are crap, they are off my phone and I don't have a digital camera.

It is like the lower part of her eye hangs way too low. She does not seem to be in a pain at all, just spends a lot of time wipeing her eyes with her foot and trying to look at the ceiling.

Poor Princess

Emily

You may recall from a previous thread about the problems with my dogs eyes......I do hope that 'P's' eyes are okay and that she's back to normal very quickly.

Re: Anyone had this problem with their dog?

Get her to the vets asap, as all spaniels are prone to entropia. Could be the hairs from the upper eyelid are growing under the lid and causing the problems with the eye, and this in turn is affecting the lower part with the watering of the eyes.
Causes the dog major discomfort, and if left untreated causes blindness.

We have always had Springer and Clumber spaniels.

Re: Anyone had this problem with their dog?

Yeah... Have just booked her a vet appointment.

I hope it isn't the thing Gerry said, as I know that is really bad.

My only other thoughts is I have just changed my fabric softner.

Will let you all know.

Re: Anyone had this problem with their dog?

Probs no help at all, but if a fabric conditioner doesn't agree with us lot, it makes us sneeze and wheeze - I haven't known one to affect our eyes. Some shampoos do, though I doubt you're giving Princess a daily bath.

Regards
Mo

Re: Anyone had this problem with their dog?

Also, a fabric conditioner could have dermatological (rashed, dandruff etc.) effects rather than causing the "baggy eyelid" thing that you describe.

I know that some, if used on my T-shirts will bring me out in a slight rash on my chest.

Human "Optrex" eye drops wont do her any harm, if you have any.

Re: Anyone had this problem with their dog?

I have half a spaniel and she had a problem with her eye, but it was obvious what it was. little tiny growth on her eyelid that rubbed on her eyeball. We had to have it operated on otherwise eventually she'd have lost her eye. I was terrified about her going under anaesthetic cos she's 14, but she was ok bit groggy and walked into things lol

Sometimes her eyes look a bit red too

Re: Anyone had this problem with their dog?

Glad to report, she is well on the mend.

Looks like simply conjunctivitis - gone from not being able to open her eyes the other morning to boucing around like a cocker spaniel.

Re: Anyone had this problem with their dog?

I use a luke warm teabag to dab the dogs (or my own on occaisons)eyes when they look sore, seems to help with minor irritation, my mom was dabbing dogs eyes for years and reckons it will always help. I have more problems with the other end of the dog, unfortunately!
