Question Anyone used the Freedom of information act?

I'm having some trouble getting information out of the Environment Agency about information on their Public Register. Basically they will provide me with site names & address (for Paragraph 7 Exemptions), but refuse to allow me to see copies of the maps.

They include maps with other registered activity on the public register (Disharge consents etc) but they refuse to do it with the Para 7 exemptions when the map is an essential part of the information - land registered may be some distance from the site address...

Anyway, I'm waffling, my main question is, has anyone used the freedom of information act successfully to get information from a pulic organisation? If so how do you do it?

Does anyone work for the environment agency? Do you know what information is available from the Public Register in your area??

Thanks

Rob

Re: Anyone used the Freedom of information act?

have you tried writing a formal letter from yourself asking for the information mentioning that you will get legal advise if they refuse? i have done this in past(and it wasn't a bluff as it was a legal bloke that told me to do this) with success.

Re: Anyone used the Freedom of information act?

I work in local government so am often on the receiving end of such requests.

Requests for information do not have to mention the act (although it helps), but requests do have to be in writing. The request should be fulfilled (i.e. information provided) within 20 days. Requests should be specific too.

Any refusal should be reported to the Information Commissioner.

Have a look at ICO – Information Commissioner's Office for all the info you need about the act.

Re: Anyone used the Freedom of information act?

I worked there for 6 years, Cheryl worked there for 11 years

I put in their electronic public register system, so know what the settings are

Give their main switchboard a bell, 01454 624400, and ask to speak to the Information Officer (can't remember her name, sorry). She should be able to help.

I thought site plans, unless covered by National security, were available If it is an exempt site, they may not have plans though.

Drop me a PM if you want and I'll see what I can find out for you as I have a few contacts still there. What area / region would also help.....

Re: Anyone used the Freedom of information act?

imuse it nearly every day in my work and have found that it all depends on which agency you are asking for the information. Some are very quick and some can take over a year becauce they have no dedicated officer to deal with your request. So perserverence seems to be the watch word!!Obviosly some departments hold sensitive items and often special clearence is needed, such as certain departments of the mod and home office....Best of luck
