Apologies Bengie and others...Vans

Should they be restricted to 50 mph.

Had a rant yesterday about a lunatic in one but virtually every van seems to be driven by a nutter.Whether its up your backside at 90 on a motorway (those of you that do 90),clinging on to the road round bends.

Why do you do it? Not just that its not your vehicle, even a rep doesn't drive as badly. Its not a sports car either,so how they don't end up on their side I don't know

Calm it down lads, please (or will hell freeze over first)

Re: Apologies Bengie and others...Vans

Is it emphasised cos you've got a thing about them? I particularly notice bad SUV drivers, though statistically they are probably no worse.

Many vans dash around our high street which are generally at least as polite, if not more so, than car drivers. If anything, we car drivers annoy them since we can't go over bumps and hold them up

Maybe it's a stress reliever to give it some welly once they get on a motorway?

Some employers restrict their vans, British Gas is one that I know of.

Re: Apologies Bengie and others...Vans

As a van driver i think your idea of restricting them to 50 mph is a little harsh,
i must admit i have been known to break the speed limits on occasions and have the points to prove it,i'm not proud of this but i have and lets face it drivers of all types of vehicles break speed limits and drive like idiots day in day out so restricting vans would not solve your problems if anything you would just end up stuck behind the same van drivers when they hog the outside lane at 50mph

i drive a van as im a builder for local council, i think there are nutters in all vehicles, but you just notice the vans more, as they are bigger and stand out more, my van wont do anything like 90mph, plus its got a tracker and my bosses know exactly where i am and what speed im doing.

Vans are restricted to 50 mph as far as I know..........HGVs are restricted to 40 mph on normal roads and 60 on dual carrigeway and motorways.

I would love my van to do 90 but you wouldn't see me in it at that speed (renault extra diesel) it's dangerous enough at 50.

And besides everyone knows the fastest thing on four wheels is a vauxhall astramax van with the radio turned all the way up

I absolutely hate drivers of four wheel vehicles, which are 26% more likely to be involved in an accident and of course unnecessarily cause that much more damage and death when they inevitably are, despite the lame arguments about higher positions and better visibility.

My route to work passes a 40 mph A-road with a primary school on it and of course living in bloody hertfordshire there are so many 4WD's being ineptly piloted around wide lazy circles that cross both lanes by women who can barely see over the wheel that it looks like a merry-go-round in the mornings

I know of a couple of big companies doing something similar with their fleets, the accident rates to date have been unbelievable and in a way this is the nuclear response. TBH seeing the projected cash savings and considering the number of accidents this translates to I believe it's inevitable that within a few years all public sector organisations and many many companies will follow suit, should save many many lives to boot.

Used to drive the works Transit minibus when I lived in Shetland. My day started at 6am when I picked up the furthest flung employee who lived 30 miles from the site. I then worked back in, picking up bods as I got closer to base. Dumped all at site, poured concrete all day, then did the journey in reverse order. Got home at 9pm

The paypackets were awesome - I was clearing £500 per week.

So were the company fuel bills. It was a 2-litre Pinto petrol with a 4-speed gearbox and I hammered it - it went through a tank of 4 star per day

Re: Apologies Bengie and others...Vans

Think a 50mph is too harsh, maybe 70? I'm consistantly amazed the number of vans that pass me on the motorway, when I'm sat at 75-80. Those LWB dual-axle Sprinter vans usually contain drivers with a death wish I find! I shudder to think how long one of those takes to pull up from often triple-figure speeds, if its fully laden. And they all seem to be white, no markings and in dire need of a wash

I had a blue Transit sitting 3 feet off my bumper on the M80 today. I was sitting at a nice steady indicated 75 with cruise engaged, overtaking a long line of slower vehicles in the inside lane when Mr Ford attached himself to my tail. I hate being tailgated and three plans of action are normally open.

Plan A - ignore them and carry on at the same speed
Plan B - boot it in 5th
Plan C - drop into 4th and boot it

This guy was really close and was really pi**ing me off, so I adopted a new Plan D:

Drop into 3rd and boot it

Never saw him again

Re: Apologies Bengie and others...Vans

i think everyone who passs their test should be made to drive a diesel van for a week so they can see what its like. taking 2 or 3 miles to get back up from 50mph to 70mph, needing to keep speed for hills etc.

it can be the most frustrating thing when ignorant drivers hold you up before a hill or something so you end up going really slow and losing a load of time over a long journey

i actually enjoy driving my 05 caddy tdi as its very car like inside and is capable of triple figure speeds if pushed and acceleration is pretty good as well to be honest,
i can't say i find it dangerous at high speeds or cornering cos it feels very stable and as it has abs and asr then its probably a lot safer than a majority of older cars on the road

I hate car drivers who insist on being the private non-uniformed policeman.

I hate car drivers who drive at 65 in the outside lane.
I hate chavies
I hate people who think they are better than you because of the car they drive.
I hate the school run.

I hate people who think a van is a pile of toot just because its a van and should be resticted to 50 on a motorway, just so they can do warp speeds themselves.

Yes I drive a VW van, 2.5 tdi auto. It goes very nicely, and is very polite to those that bother to pay attention to the road instead of chatting on their mobile phone, or insist on driving at granny speed across both lanes 2 and 3 on a motorway.

One thing I notice about van drivers is that they know their vehicle, its potential and limitations, width in town driving. etc. After all, it's just possible that they do rather more miles than I do in a week

Eh? Think we are all entitled to report anyone who drives like a berk. There is a number on the back normally

People who think they are better than you because of their car are a little bit shallow and not to be worried about or hated

No one hates vans,or hates them becaause they stop you doing warp speed.

A van was not designed to do 100mph.It is still a tall box.It isn't designed for quick psycho manoeuvres in traffic. It is still a box.

I hope I havn't got to say how many van drivers I know are lovely people, like my brother

I'd agree there but that applies to cars aswell, there are some cars out there that need winding up before they can take a hill on the motorway! All they need it some tw*t in a jag sitting in the middle lane doing 65!

The Peugeot Boxer van I drove at work was very nippy indeed! Personally most lane hoggers bug the hell out of me as to tailgaters ragardless of what they are.

Restricted them? No as I'm sure that will cause more problems in the long run

Think you're generalising diesel vans a bit.
Some of you guys obviosuly haven't driven a Sprinter.

Re: Apologies Bengie and others...Vans

I think you'll find you can't just bundle all 'vans' under the same heading, I've driven my van all over the country and encountered crap drivers of all vehicles.

Acceleration isn't always quickest so if you cause a van driver to slow down for no good reason they may well get a bit irrate. Generally they have the bad end of a sh*tty stick and have to drive, work then drive wherever again so it isn't difficult to wind them up.

I disagree with vans not being designed for doing 100mph, i think you'll find my Merc Sprinter 313CDI has a top speed of 105mph and I can testify it will do that whilst empty and fully loaded.

But I'm comfortable with this as I know the ins and outs of my van and lets see how your motor's perform with 250,000 miles on the clock as I know mine is good for that :-)
