Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Never knew it would be so stressful

Trying to get a venue for the reception and it looks like we're just going to have it for family and close friends. Even through my mum and dad have offered to pay up to £1000 for the reception as their wedding present to us we have went over budget by say £300 which is not too bad, but we still need entertainment, photographer.

Going to phone a couple of places today to see if I can get a appointment with a wedding advisor, so that me, SWMBO and my dad can go along to see whats what.

Anybody in the same boat or who endured the stress be able to help.

Cheers

Davy

Live together for a while longer. Then you'll have nowhere near enough money to even consider getting married.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Our main aim was to have a cheap as possible wedding nothing too lavish but with the offer of £1000 to pay for the recepetion we thought it would be worthwhile to get a decent reception place instead of say the local church hall.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Davy,

Keep an eye peeled for some wedding fairs.

Loads at this time of year in the town etc...

As for places..

Any bowling clubs etc..near you ?

Church hall can be just as nice if you dont want to spend lots of cash.

A few hours hard work can get a hall looking great for a reception.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Tbe only problem we have is do you think we have left it too late as the wedding in April! The other problem with the church hall is no booze allowed!

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Depends on which church hall you go to i suppose.

Wedding i was at last week was a church hall in Peebles, no bar, but kitchen was full of booze for folks to help themselves.

I wouldn't think you've left it too late.
Although the sooner you can find somewhere, get a regsitrar booked (if thats the way you're going)
Or book a church if you're a member of a local one ??

Your other option would be to knock it back a month or two if you cant find anywhere.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

I don't think you've left it too late for next April

Consider changing the day from Saturday (if that's waht you're planning) so that you have better venue availability and you might be able to get a discount compared to a Saturday wedding.

I have to admit that I'm lucky that my FiL paid to feed and water 375 people (free bar) - (different culture so it cost much less than you would think) - but considering 350 were his friends and family, I thought that was fair.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Just called the quay in Musselburgh and the suite is free for our big day so I have pencilled ourselfs in but need to arrange a suitable appointment so we can view the room and see if it will be ok.

We managed to get the church booked a wee while ago and I did ask about booze but church of scotland does not allow it, but a catholic church does so I have heard, lucky for being a member I get the church for a fee of £100!

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Good stuff Davy.

Quay is always busy with weddings, and always good.
Hall is a fair size upstairs too.

And plenty car parking for the Fabias

The main thing is we're under no obligation to book with them just pencilled in at the moment which is good.

You still up for wedding car driver Johnny still going to run with the idea of Fabia's for something that bit diffrent!

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

We looked at dozens of places for our reception, and found that a lot of them lumped the cost of hiring the place in with the cost-per-head of food and drink. Therefore, if you find somewhere with a room the right size for your number of guests, you should be able to work out pretty easily how much it's going to cost overall...

We had about 100-odd guests for both wedding breakfast and evening buffet, and it came to something like £60 per head to give you some idea of the cost (although this only included booze on arrival and with the meals...)

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

The first thing is to try and relax, we got married last year and it is stressful. for the photos do you know any one who is a keen photographer? we asked a friend who had some nice cameras to do it and he took 1,000 of which 150 were great. try and go for basic but good food, people get carried away and no one ever remembers wedding food. put the budget towards booze!

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

I have enquired about a photographer and is offering me it for £500 instead of £800 which is like the whole day, going to see if I can get any cheaper or friends but will see. It just stressed me last night looking at prices and what people have to offer started at 6.30 and finished about 9pm!! with hardly anything done!

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Another option is to hire a digital SLR and give it to someone to use, it really is not so difficult and the days of soft focus are over. If you make a list of all the photos you want to have for sure and let them roam the wedding you should get some good shots.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

I'm getting married on the 12th July and the thing I'm looking forward to most is not having to hear about bloody weddings any more.

We found the band to be the trickiest one to get. We had to book 18 months in advance and even then we didn't get our first choice.

You probably won't need a photographer. Most of the guest will have digital cameras and if you get copies of all of them you'll get enough good ones.

As soon as you mention the 'W' word prices triple. I think you are doing the right thing by setting a low budget. It's the people that matter not the price.

Mother-in-law and SWMBO have got 'perfect wedding fever' which means everything is very expensive and very stressful. Best avoided if you can.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

I had a little involvement in planning my wedding and what I did, went badly. Who can forget such gems, ahem, as http://briskoda.net/forums/roadside-...st-song/74893/ So here's what I learnt when I got married, some bits of which will be more helpful than others:

If you chose to get married into some bizarre cult, don't let your Father-in-law arrange the 'baptism'. Mark my words, it'll be crazier than fiction and you'll think you've joined the Stonecutters' Lodge.

Stag Do? Don't waste money you haven't got, The Stag Event is a con that has somehow fueled an parasitic industry in banality and tat. Spend the time with your friends, the real ones, doing something you enjoy, even if its only drinking, only then is it a Stag do. Save your friends' (and your) money for the next point...

Before you get married, take the opportunity to see naked ladies (multiple) for the last time, don't touch of course, you'll get thrown out. Her friends WILL hire her a "full monty" stripper so you're just getting your retaliation in early. Even better, make sure your wife-to-be is out of the country.

Sing some rugby/dirty songs for good measure, "the hairs on her d!ckie-dido hung down to her knees" is a personal fave of mine.

When your venue decides to increase prices by 15% in the short time between paying your deposit and the actual event, don't stand for it.

Don't use high street jewellers for rings. Find a knowledgeble and helpful independent jeweller as the chances are you'll pay less and get what you want, not just what they have in the window.

When your wife tells you that wedding dresses cost upwards of £1000, don't believe her. Her 'modest', 'middle of the range' dress by some guy called Ian will turn up on next year's Apprentice as a designer label at 3 times the price of the competitions' dresses.

Also with wedding dresses, women tell you the ticket price but forget to mention that the veil costs extra, the fitting/alterations cost extra, new underwear costs extra, shoes cost extra etc. You get the idea, whatever the dress 'costs' add at least 25% for the other stuff.

Lastly, when she says her dress has a 'train', don't get excited, its not the Hornby type. Although play your cards right and there'll be plenty of bells and whistles to play with later

Take the time to get a suit that fits and makes you look good, you're in those photos too. If you want to dress like a penguin go for it but don't think its bad to spend good money on a suit that fits and will last you years either.

Your family will have some sort of disagreement on the day but don't worry, keep drinking and look after your wife.

ALWAYS haggle for wedding stuff - There's a big mark-up on wedding stuff so with any service, big purchase etc, try and get the price down or something else thrown in. The more you're payig for something the more you can get off. Sometimes it will work and it'll make your money go further.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Thanks for the advice there mate,

Stag and Hen Do : We we're thinking os something diffrent to this one as a local karting centre hold hens v stags at karting which would be great fun.

Wedding dress: I believe SWMBO's aunt and uncle will pay for this up to £300.

And I'm sure there will be sparks at the wedding I can see it happening!

Very true. So, Hannah, don't tell the hairdresser that you're on your way to your own wedding. And don't tell the florist that you are after a bridal bouquet. You'll get the same job done at a much better price.

You could, of course, follow the exemple of SWMBO and me... we sneaked off to the registrar's office and had a cup of coffee afterwards, didn't come to £10

OK, there was the rings, and the day after we went for a week in Vienna, but still...

No. Probably not the best alternative for you - everyone should have at least one big party to remember. I had already been through my memorable £1,000 party when I took my degree, and SWMBO who just loves big family&friend reunions had her 40th and 50th birthday. But why wait for so long when you don't have to?

Big dos are stressful and hard work - but afterwards you'll only remember the good parts!

Oh, and the rings: daiking is right, find an independent jeweller or a goldsmith that could make you something special after your own liking - it's not necessarily more expensive! Especially if you don't go for a lot of diamonds - could be nicer (and cheaper) to have a personal and unique carved gold ring than a standardised with lots of diamonds from one of the big chains. Think celtic...

I was just think of getting my hair cut the day before or something and getting a friend to do my hair nice on the day. Why pay silly cost for a wedding hair do when I can get a friend to do it for nothing really. And the dress I not wanting anything Pricy cos my aunty is buying it and the way i see it you wear it once so why spend lots of money on it. I just want something nice but not too pricy.
Going away just the 2 of us sounds good in a way. Less stress planning but then you come back and have tell everyone. My mum's face would be a picture though. But my ear oh dear that would be very red.
Did see on the internet last night. Greta was something like £1000 and something.
