Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

If she's ok with it you could get a second hand dress. She might get something that was originally very expensive for not much. It's only been worn once after all.

And I'm told antique jewellery is the stuff to buy. You allegedly pay the true price of the metal not the inflated figure and the workmanship is better.

I wanted to get a tungsten ring from John Greed but I was overruled and I've got a palladium ring. I think I'll still get a steel or tungsten 'everyday' ring.
SWMBO has a white gold band with 7 diamonds. Modest taste

Yesterday she spent £280 on shoes and tiaras for her and the bridesmaids. I don't even know how much the flowers are other than the florist said "A lot".

My mate had the best idea. He proposed then went on a 4 month tour on board a nuclear sub. Completely uncontactable. When he got back it was all arranged.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

SWMBO has got her wedding shoes think they cost £12 from tesco in slough!

And I was reading in the paper you can get a wedding dress for about £35 from tk max and it looks stunning!

Oh and one other piece of advice ,don't get so ratted the night before that you are still terribly hungover for the service at 1800 the next day apparently the bride does not like it

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

on the stag do - whilst I've even been abroad for other people's, mine consisted of a 'Madchester' revival night at one of the clubs in town followed by a mass curry!

Extremely well received by all concerned, although we could have done with getting there a bit earlier as 'Definitely Might Be' had nearly finished their set by the time we went in... The Clone Roses were good, though!

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Best stag night i've been on was also the quietest one.

Met for a few beers around lunchtime, onto a local cafe for a big fry up, then a slow pub crawl, until night time where we went to somewhere bigger for all the others to meet up, was excellent, and if you stay close to home on the stag do, it's amazing just how many more people come along because they've not had to splash out on train fares/hotels to go somewhere else.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Call me a cheap skate but tbh I think weddings are a right royal rip-off. I think ours came to a grand total £320.

Registary office, used our own and friends cars (the wedding car was an xr2i ) Photos by freinds and family, reception/ meal held at a local restaurant/ function place with a sit down meal for iirc 16 and the place had a resident disco In fairness swmbo had been married before but I certainly didn't miss having a massive do.

I was best man at my best mans wedding a few years later, that was a massive catholic jobbie, iirc he was still paying for it 4 years later when they got divorced

Uh, yeah. A quick shuftie on my PDA tells me that our wedding left us light by £25524.43 Although had I not used some of the profit from selling my flat to fund it, I think we'd have scaled things back - we certainly wouldn't have borrowed money to pay for it...

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

I had a good stagger in Edinburgh on the 7th.

We went to Musselburgh Racecourse for ladies day.
A meal then onto a comedy club followed by the noodie bar then a bad club.
I think it cost us all about £200 each. That;s a big night out but a lot cheaper than going abroad. We were able to stay at a few mates who live in Ed so that saved money.

I've been on a few stags that were quite similar. They've all gone well and been a good laugh.

I think our will cost about £15000 including the honeymoon with us paying about half. Looks like a lot but it's cheaper than many. I've a lump of it transferred onto a 0% deal on a credit card. Worry about it in a few months.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Firstly best of luck with your plans guys.

For my stag do I decided to go paintballing with loads of mates and then went for chinese buffet meal and out for a few drinks, was an ace day. Even the hunt the stag mission at the paintball, I had to wear a flourescent yellow vest and could be shot an invite number of times until all I had hit all the other players......lol

Our wedding turned out to be relatively stress free, although I didn't have to much to do after deciding what colour to do the invites, etc. Our parents were very kind and as they get on well with each other got together one day and talked about costs, and decided to offer equal ammounts of money to give us the best day ever. Goes downhill after that.... Only joking.

As Postmanpat has said though money doesn't make the day, the people and family around you will make it.

I'm all for booking the big day on a Friday. We decided on a Friday and ended up with a great reception venue and they're wern't any other weddings that day so we could have photo's taken anywhere in or around the hotel.

We managed to save on a few costs, by having swmbo's mum making the cake (she was a food tech teacher) and my sister making the cake decorations which were stunning. We also made all our own invites, orders of service and place cards. Simply bought a load or paper and card and some simple decorations and hey presto.

I like your idea of the Fabia wedding car, looks like Jonny is in for a good few days cleaning getting her spotless. lol.

Don't discount local rugby or social clubs for a venue as with some simple touches they can look real good. As has been mentioned buying a good fitting suit that you can use for years to come will be as good as hiring one.

To further cut costs to allow more people to come swmbo went for artificial flowers for the bouquet and decorating the venue they definately worked out cheaper than real flowers. As such some of them can be given to friends/family as a token of thanks. People were even amazed to find out that her boquet wasn't real and won't wilt during the day and end up looking like some dead weeds, we now even bring it out at Christmas to decorate the house, looks really good.

As mentioned by a few look at smaller independant jewelers and supliers as they're prices will be more reasonable, and better quality maybe. And getting friends to take pics and videos is another good idea.

Hope some of this has been useful, and I wish you both well. Relax and it should all go well.

Thanks very useful stuff here. I was thinking of making the wedding cake myself but my mum has band me and I'm a trained chef. But I have a friend from College who will possibly make it as she is a tried chef too and works in a bakery. I like your I deal of using artifishal flowers. Sounds good idea.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

That's cool, hope the planning goes well for you both. Remember you'll find you need to compromise on certain things, and do what you want to do or have what you want it's your day. I think it will get far more stressfull if you try to please other people too much.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

I've been chatting to my sister and she would be willing to make a decoration for you both, or even modify one that she has already made for my parents 40th wedding anniversary. My mum has been asking others if it could be used for a similar event, and would gladly let you use it if you would like?

as far as preparations and stress is concerned, my advice is

- don't make the wedding DAY more important than the rest of your married LIFE together.
