Sounds a good idea. Offer them a crate of beer.
I would love to turn up to the wedding in an old Skoda.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Well tonight we settled down redone the guest list and sorted the bridesmaids and best man out, so we have as follows

Bridesmaids: My 12 year old sis and Hannah's 18 year old sis.

Bestman: Friend I have known for ages as long as he keeps quiet about a certain prank involving thongs, car wipers and getting stopped by the police I will be alright.

I'm also thinking of wearing a kilt as well!!

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

well I have to admit I was a bit of a idiot last night, told my dad the number of guests we were having last night and he went did you include yourself and Hannah?

It just dawned on me that we had not!

It's easy done.
Did you include the vicar if one is to be involved?

Might have a look there at the bridesmaid dresses.

A couple of prob silly questions but I unsure. Who pays for the bridesmaid dresses? Is it me? And do the bridesmaids have to wear the same dresses?

Didn't know the vicar was supposed to wear the same dress as the bridesmaid - is that some kind of Church of Scotland exclusive

We're paying the bridesmaids for ours. They paid their own at my mates wedding last year and treated them as wedding gifts.

We bought them for our bridesmaids and paid for the suit hire of the "responsible" men (i.e. best man, usher etc.)

It can add up pretty quickly, but the bridesmaids' dresses weren't particularly expensive, and as they were bought instead of hires, they got to keep them for "posh frock" duty (linky).

My wife was bridesmaid at the wedding of some friends of ours where she wore a different dress to the other two (same pattern, different colour admittedly), but as long as the dresses don't clash, it should be OK.

One advantage of paying yourself is that you can choose the design, if you're going to ask your bridesmaids to buy their own dresses, it might not go down too well if you say they have to get a particular dress - especially if it's an arm and a leg job!

But there aren't any rules for anything like that, so just do what you feel!

I was thinking of maybe TKmax or Monsoon. Maybe something like £40 a dress or something. Don't want be spending too much on the dresses. Cos you can still getnice dresses on a budget. I was in TKMax few weeks ago looking at wedding dresses and they had some nice ones for £39.99. So I think that be where I might go for my wedding dress.

TK Maxx is always worth a look, although of course you can't guarantee what stock they're going to have being an end-of-line outlet and all - happy hunting!

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

A wee update, it's really coming together we were up at the ministers last night talking about order of service and working out times to have the wedding, so feel a bit more relaxed now, now we have a venue provisional booked, a order of service so looking for a well deserved break where maybe we can work out hymns for the service and all that.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Ok heres another problem I've got:

I asked my friend to be my best man and he said he would be happy to do it, but he will not know until next year when his next batch of holidays come up, do you think it is worthwhile getting a back up? You would think that if you give your work a years notice they would mark it down for next year for such a important role.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Is your wedding going to be on a weekday or a weekend ?

If it's a weekend, does he work saturdays ???

But in any case, get a backup !!

Although be subtle when asking....dont want the backup person feel like they're second best.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

It's a friday afternoon, but you think with giving a years notice it would sort of role him into action and say how important a role it is for him. It is the week before easter and he works in retail so there might not be a chance of getting that day off due to the run up of easter.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

I don't know the guy, but if I were you, I'd be rather disappointed that the guy didn't say yes, unconditionally and straightaway. I hadn't seen (and had barely spoken to) my best man for a couple years before I got married, but there still wasn't any swithering on his part. IMO, if the guy you've got in mind can't make the commitment to arrange a SINGLE DAY off work, then you need to look for someone else...

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Well at first mate, we were going to use my brother but I was advised not to by my dad, my brother has got a bad habit of getting drunk and the last thing the wedding party and guests need are him swearing his head off about me with a few f words chucked in for good measure, so there was a couple I had in mind another friend from a car forum but only know him for a year and a half and my best mate who I asked, I actually e-mailed him and then called him a couple of nights later and he swithered saying would need the time off but would love to do it. SWMBO works accross the road from him so popped into buy something and asked him about it today and he said won't know till the next holiday board comes out prob at the end of the year/start of next.

Another best friend I have known for years I don't think would do it as he is not a people person but would have cracking stories to tell about me. I'm going to badger my potential best man again till he gets it in concrete. SWMBO thought it was best perhaps to speak to his boss herself and tell them he needs the day off.

Unfortunately there is a thing of too much notice - if they still use "holiday cards" then chances are these won't be drawn up until near the start of the holiday year. So if he asks for the time off now, there won't be anywhere to record this...so it wouldn't definitely be booked until it's officially signed off, which is the point he might be trying to get across.
And it's probably better for him to let you know about this rather than just pretending that it's definitely in the bag and then disappointing you.

Personally wouldn't worry about getting a back up just yet - a best man's duties don't take a year of planning anyway so finding a replacement at shortish notice if he can't get the time off shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Well tonight myself, SWMBO and my dad went to the venue for a wee look around and to dicuss the reception, bit of a nightmare as the people who we were ment to meet had swaned off early and it was left to a manager who could only tell us certain things but not all the info we wanted! Have arranged another appoinment for tomorrow night with the wedding folks, so lets hope it all goes to plan tomorrow.
