Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Goochie - I see what you mean mate, we are trying to keep things simple but it was actually the place where the reception will be held suggesting we can get it much cheaper as they told us that they have to waste a lot of food for buffet's ie a 60 person buffet means some of the food will go to waste, we had a budget of £2000 at first but with the number of guests coming it is only about £1200 but then the place where the reception will be held gave us a quote of £980 if they do things a diffent way around like diffrent way to doing a toast and welcome drink and the buffett.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

I'm going to be 26 years old when we get married and SWMBO will be 23 when she gets married to me, we have been told by our parents that they are willing to pay for the reception and all the other things, all we need to do is concentrate on getting a house so thats the best part of it. We can afford a house.

All we got to do for the wedding is pay for the church which is a sum of £100.

We've been engaged nearly a year and a half and nearly two by the time we get married.

Also try calling it a business dinner rather than a wedding for quotes and see what a difference you get in terms of reduced pricing.

How about a honeymoon? If we did it all again we've since said we'd rather have a cheaper wedding and an even more expensive holiday

Fair enough. I'd just say are you sure you can afford a house if interest rates go up and the house value drops after you've taken out your mortgage?

Daft thing to say but you really need to look at the worse case and see if you can afford it then as these things can happen and it's better to wait than get shafted.

Totally agree,

Cheap small wedding, friends for the non excessive reception and then a once in a lifetime trip somewhere exotic or interesting would be the way I'd do it too.

Face it most people will be drunk at the wedding, so why spend 6k plus on it when £6k would buy one hell of a holiday.

First class tickets, a nice hotel for a week or two and the time of your lives.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

I once heard a story of a couple who couldnt afford a photographer. They bought a load of disposable cameras and handed them out to all the guests.

By the time they'd filtered out the up-skirt shots of the bridesmaides they had some decent memories - and all for under £20

I would think the up-skirt ones would have been kept by the best man.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Fair point Cheesemonkhai - thats the problems with houses at the minute, but I think as I said before if it means renting for the first six months to a year then thats what we have to do.

Goochie - Honeymoon will be sorted next month still toying with the idea of either somewhere in britain or abroad but not too far abroad as I'm not a sort of abroad person and neither is SWMBO, so we've been toying with the idea of the lake district.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

In that case, consider the Channel Islands (Guernsey or Jersey) - they're a happy mix of Britishness and French.

Familiar shops and food mixed with French place names, continental restaurants etc.

EDIT: Also consider The Faulkland Islands

My best man is barred from taking pics or filming, I have SWMBO's 21st video and said best man was there and spent a lot of time zooming in and out on her.

His quoto to me "Never used one of these camcorders before!"

Funny how he found the zoom button!

Your honeymoon is a once in a life time chance (assuming this marriage works out). Do something really special. I'm sorry but I don't think the lakes is that big a thing. You want to remember it. Maybe Ireland and a nice hotel.

Also adding to Phil's list:

- India
- Hong Kong
- Canada
- Australia / NZ

They are all British influenced place thanks to our once vast empire.

Another thought about photo's. At a mates wedding recently they handed out blank CDR's to everyone who wanted one as people were taking pictures on digital cameras and phones.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Still doesn't look as good as a pro using medium format, the right film, paper and mounts and a nice album IMHO.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Yeah, obviously they had the pro photographer there but for the reception etc. afterwards, catch everyone having a good time, plus most phones and cameras can take video too, and more spontaneous too.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Very true, I have been in contact with a photographer within the last two months only problem being he comes from down south and would bring a assistant with him.

I'm going to ask SWMBo's mum and dad to sort this we think as it is only fair that they should chip in by paying for this and say the disco. It's actually quite good as most of our friends have said they will chip in and do things for us like the cake, buy the dress, think my auntie will buy my suit, so it is all working out. I know it is april the wedding is but the year has flown by already.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Our wedding photographer works taking pictures of houses etc. for a living. As a result he was cheaper than a full-time wedding pro and missed the opportunity to make more money by happily handing us all the high-res images on a DVD afterwards.

Little things like that are normally chargable but allow you to make many prints at minimal cost later on.

Funniest thing I seen at a wedding fair was a photo booth which took all the guests piccies on hire from a about £1000 for the day!

No you joke, but those I know have been told, why are you so much more we can just give our mates disposables or have our mates take them for much less.

You explain insurance in case film is damaged and other stuff and they moan about price and then you walk away saying, ok do it your way then.

Those sort of people are not worth doing business with because you won't sell a single extra in addition to the basics and they will want it all as cheap as.

Get a local guy who people you know recommend. Much cheaper than somebody coming from down south. Wedding photographers are good and all, but they cost a bomb, so add to that travel costs and it's going to hurt.

That plus he can't come around to show you samples before you select which album and mounts you want, if you want them silk or glossy. Then once they are done he can't pick the best pictures and let you select from them. Eg you paid for an album of 60 and he has 100 pics. You select the 100 you like most from samples and they get printed properly and mounted.

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Most wedding photographers nowadays have websites with examples of their work. My nephew used one who turned out to be not terribly good, and a look at his website showed some really awful photos of other weddings. (For example: using a backdrop for some photos, but then arranging everyone so they didn't fit in front of the backdop!)
Luckily, a few of us in the family have decent cameras (including me and my brother in law), so we had some good shots to give them. The video of the ceremony wasn't half bad, too. thanks to some nifty camerawork from a handy uncle (me again!)

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Depending on how long you want them there for, that's probably about right. It seems like a lot of money, but few of them are really raking it in, as unless you're into other other types of photography too, you're effectively just earning one day a week for only some of the weeks in a year, and that income's got to pay for all the 'backroom' stuff you do once the photos have been taken as well as being money to live off. Seems extortionate, but when you look at it like that, it isn't really...

Re: Arrrghh! Wedding Planning....

Nothing worse than bad wedding photos, I should know If you're taking a cheaper/alternative approach to it, be sure you'll both be happy with the results whatever they are.

As to the honeymoon, my wife and I never got a proper chance to do it. Our wedding was complicated as it was abroad (but not a holiday) and we only had time to spend 6 days by ourselves afterwards. We planned to do it properly a few months later after all the wedding hassle had gone but she got pregnant straight away and spending thousands on a holiday was no longer a priority.

I look back a year later and couldn't care less. What we have now is far more rewarding than a fancy holiday. Don't get caught up in the fashion for exotic destinations if that's not really your thing. Do something you both want to do, not something the TV says everyone is doing.
