| So i was due to go out tonight, blow a few mental cobwebs out and cheer myself up with a couple of friends. ONly, my lovely lungs have other ideas. Stepped out of house, walked to my mates car and started to have breathing issues. Took a puff of an inhaler, but, nothing improved. So I'm now sat back at home, on a £$£$%££$ nebuliser inhaling Ventolin in aerosolised form, which is giving me the shakes. I really wanted to have a drink too, but probably not a wise idea now. Oh well. So, any other asthmatics out there in Briskoda? Care to share medicine info/coping strategies/ attack triggers etc? Dunno what set me off tonight. Maybe shift from hot dry house to wet and damp.......happens sometimes. |

| Yeah I am sort of. Luckily, I only suffer from mild asthma and have never really had a proper attack. The worst ive ever been was mountain biking in the Lakes; riding during the day was fine but got to the evening and felt like I was getting a cold. The smokey pub didnt help either. Got to bed that night and felt like I couldnt breathe- inhalers had run out (id never let that happen again) and these idiots were making me laugh Was quite chilly that night aswell. I just take small breaths in and out, keep as still as possible but try and keep my mind off it.......Usually colds/flu trigger mine so I up the dose of my Pulmicort. Do you use a preventer? |

| thought the pulmicort was the preventer..... got bricanyl (blue twist bottom), oxis (green twist bottom) and pulmicort (brown twist). used to have serevent diskhaler. the ventolin nebules are for the really bad episodes, thankfully very rare (4-6 times a year now) somey pubs never help. main trigger for me i find is smoke, diesel exhaust (oh the irony!) and, wouldn't you know it, epic stress. |

| Briskodian | Hi Gwilo I am not a doctor and you must seek proper advice. As you have been looking after a neighbour's cat, much fluff and dander will be in your otherwise "free" environment. A good vacuuming of carpets, furniture and surfaces will not hurt, even if it doesn't help. Did you increase your daily dosage of Becotide (the brown one) and keep a blue (Salbutamol) handy at all times? Make sure these are not out of date! The body reacts to cold chill air, and potential chest infections, so should you be checking your preventers with the doc at this damp time of year? I have two air purifiers going permanently BTW. Have you checked with the doc the strength of steroid going into your nebuliser and how often you should be using it? Bad luck on a Friday night - hope you can look forward to tomorrow's Sunday lunch. Mo Best Mo |

| mo.... cat stays firmly put....i just let her in the neighbours for feeding. no way could i allow her in to live with me. shame, cos she's a bit of a cutey as cats go. *turns of softie mode* re: meds - all up to date with dosages etc. joys of annual astham assessment/review. just one of the situations i prolly have to contend with. not that i usually go out friday, but would've been nice this time. looking fwd to steak tonight....*cue an ag.morley type thread* ![]() |

| Re: Asthma really blows Well talk about up heaving an old thread... but I always found the more exercise I do the better my asthma is. I've now got it to the point that I'll only really feel wheezy now when I'm full of cold. |

| Re: Asthma really blows I've got Athsma! I have 4 doses of symbicort (which cotains steroids) twice a day Bricanyl Turbohailer as and when required. I also have some Steroid tablets of which I have to take 8 once a day when I am really bad. My attacks can be caused by pretty much anything. Caugh, Sneeze, running/any sport. Got worse over the last couple of years but now working to improve this by improveing my general fitness. I am also prone to chest infections. God I love my lungs! ![]()

| Briskodian | Re: Asthma really blows I only know about it because of son's, which is OK in summer and comes back as soon as the air turns cold and damp - especially if any hint of a chest infection. As he trains or plays rugby almost every day, it can't be lack of exercise in his case. Anyway, I'm posting to say that he was prescribed a peak flow meter of his own (along with meds) last week, so as to monitor daily. The "preventers" are meant to keep it under control though, or must report back. Have to see how it goes. Regards Mo |

| Re: Asthma really blows I am a doctor - but it's not my specific field - I heard of a US study some time back that use Azithromycin antibiotic treatment to actually markedly improve/cure asthma - it may be an idea to do an internet search. If the results were valid, Azithromycin is an extremely safe antibiotic, you may find an open-minded GP to prescribe it for you, but it isn't exactly cheap unless a generic form is available in the UK. Otherwise it is down to identifying and avoiding known preciptating agents: inhaled allergens (boil/hot iron wet sheets frquently to kill dust mites) get an HEPA airpurifier, avoid oral aspirin, use a nebuliser before exercise. Inhaled therapy includes things like, IIRC: steroids (which are vital to prevent further long-term worsening) and ventolin (to tell the airways to open up directly). Oral agents are also available (not steroids) that can help - can't remember the name right now. Genuinely sorry to hear of your attack....Get better soon. One way of looking at it is, if you had been alright and actually gone out, something bad could have happened to you say on the motorway. It may have been a blessing in disguise perhaps? Get better soon Bas

| Re: Asthma really blows I've had asthma since I was seven. I currently take Symbicort 400/12 two puffs twice a day and Salbutamol as required. If I am bad I can increase the Symbicort up to 4 puffs twice a day for short periods, although this is not recommended as it can weaken your bone structure. The Salbutamol inhaler I currently use is an 'Easyhaler' and has a counter on the side showing the number of doses left. Much better than the old sort. I probably use it too much but that's largely psychological. I can exercise fine as long as I warm up carefully. I can't run as this triggers it off, as does grass pollen and feathers. I used to be allergic to cats but am fine with them now. I have not had a full attack requiring hospital treatment since 1987, thanks largely to steroidal preventative medicine. Touch wood.

Im still trying to shift some of the weight gained too. If you have been on the steriod treatments for a while check with your doctor that you dont have symtoms of Cussions Syndrome caused by them, as they took several years to find my cause. Sorry about the naff spellings! Im on Flixotide/seravent, Bricynal, montelucast, nasacort, neoclarityn, cocodomal & paracetamol, eyedrops, dyclafenic. & I use a nebuliser too . Hydrocortisone for eczema. OOOhhh, and steriod tablets which cause me to be really depressed so they get nicknamed "paddy tablets" & Have to carry a epipen with me at all times due to many allergies. Been on adult doses of meds since I was about 8 or 9 I have found though that breathing excercises help alot and (call me Harold Bishop) but playing a brass instrument such as a tuba or trombone etc really helps teach you to breath properly, and has really improved my asthma. Some say that swimming helps too, however recent studies have found that the chlorine in the water interacts with sweat and wee and produces chemicals that irritate asthmatics. Cats are a pain in the a*se as they set me going something rotton ![]()

| Briskodian | Re: Asthma really blows Hello Bas We have Erythromycin, which is an antibiotic often prescribed when penicillin is contra-indicated. I've not heard of it being used re asthma though. *Goes off to research this Azithromycin thingy* ![]() Regards Mo |

| Re: Asthma really blows Know how you feel. My dad has it really bad and has to take steroids to control it, and I've got it mildly. It partly ruined my holiday as I wanted to Scuba dive on the great barrier reef in Aus, but as you need a medical certificate, no doctor would pass me no matter what the outcome of a lung capacity test was. As far as they were concerned, you have asthma, you cannot dive.

| Re: Asthma really blows My cousin has bad asthma. To the point where if she goes away for any length of time she has to take a neb with her just in case. Its been close a few times in hospital. Best thing she ever did was change her doctor, he took her off the medication she was on and she has been much better since. She also suffers with bad nut allergies and eczema (was about 80% of her body when she was younger, now just her hands and feet) so she doesnt have alot of luck bless her. She got married this year though and has a young baby boy who is great so it just doesnt stop her. |

Eczema is a pain in the backside like, I used to have it fairly bad but now I just have it on my knees and elbows which gets a bit annoying in the summer but I can live with it. ***800th post yay!!!***

| Re: Asthma really blows unfortunatly yes. You have to fill out a form asking for any medical history. You might get away with it if you are already qualified, but they will recommend not doing it.

| Re: Asthma really blows My sister and I used to have bad asthma as kids when we lived near to an open cast mine. We then moved to the coast and the asthma gradually got better. I grew out of it but My sis still suffers. She recently was told to stop relying on the ventolin all the time and just take daily doses of the becotide (brown one). Since then her asthma has improved and she doesn't need the becotide as much and never uses ventolin now. Good luck to those with more serious asthma though, it's a bain. |
