Unhappy Beer belly

Well, since new years day I have set about a diet and exercise regime, primarily to get fitter, but I was also hoping to get rid of the cursed beer belly and generally improve my physical appearance.
Now I would consider myself medium to slender build, 5ft 9", and I have managed to drop my weight from 12st 2 lbs on NYD to 11st 3 lbs now. But the beer belly, while smaller, still remains. It would appear I am stripping fat from everywhere else except around the stomach area!
I have cut right down on fatty foods (cheese, fried foods etc.), cut down beer to one night a week and am eating generally a lot healthier.
Has anyone got any other ideas for getting rid of the remainder?

TIA.

Second that mate, the stomach is the last place to lose it. as I know,
I'm on the same sort of routine (but not done half as well as you).
So don't give up & let us know how you do.

yashicamat,

I posted the exact same question just before Xmas. I am thin everywhere apart from my tummy,

After Xmas I went on a diet (And I'm still on it), I have gone really thin on the waist e.t.c, and my belly is noticably smaller, but it's slow progress for me still,

I am doing lots of crunches and press ups to generally improve my physice and I have become noticably firmer,

I just lack the willpower to eat only whats neccecary

Keep up with it

I'll 3rd that!

Its one of the unfortunate realities of being a man - we don't have breasts for the fat to go to, so it manifests itself in a 'keg' like shape on our stomachs!

I'm also struggling to reduce mine - sounds like you are doing really well

I've been told you can also look at doing excercises to tone your stomach muscles which also help to pull it all in aswell as reducing it.

Good luck!

Yep, just keep going Rob. Don't take this the wrong way, but you can't expect it to just disappear in less than a month

Maintain the regime and the results will come

Re: Beer belly

You could also try what some womenfolk do If one slouches, tummy (or podge really) is apparent. If one breathes in and "stands tall", podge all but disappears. Now, when you breathe out, do that only from the chest whilst retaining podge muscles in place We learned that in deportment lessons yonks ago and it takes a bit of practise, but after a while, it becomes normal not to slouch and the relevant podge muscles know they are meant to be active all the time.

The exercise where you stretch whilst pretending to climb a ladder two steps at a time is good for strengthening the lateral muscles in a dagonal motion also

Mo

Re: Beer belly

Good going with the weight loss Rob

One area you could work on in addition to the cardio-vascular training is to do some core stability exercises

Core stability exercises

These are very good for strengthening the muscles around the core of the body (stomach, back, butt etc) and will help greatly with posture and general strength.

The exercises are difficult to do properly without instruction since the purpose of them is to isolate specific muscles and work that muscle only. If you start doing them I would recommend you have someone instruct you in how to do them first and then observe you to ensure you perform them correctly (enquire at a local gym to see if they do any classes for these)

The first session of core stability will probably destroy you for about a week - it did to me anyway At the rowing club core stability is incorporated into the training plan.

As for the beer belly it will reduce gradually over time - just keep at the exercise and healthy eating but don't expect it to vanish within a month. For information I am about the same height and weight as you and I still have a layer of fat over my stomach (but the muscle beneath it is rock solid now )

Free-weight exercises as opposed to fixed weight machines are also very good for core-muscles..

also the best way to get rid of the beer belly.....

Dont drink beer

Free weights also build the stabalising muscle's as apposed to isolatating a specific muscle.

Compound movements rule, machine weights are for the devil (or people with injury)

Yashimacat - f.ucking excellent progress mate, that's a huge amount.

The last lot will be hard to shift, but it will.

Would you mind posting your current training regime and diet?

May be able to advise

2nd ya walkie on that....core stability exercise will only strenghen the muscle under the fat!!...it wont give you a six pack!!....you have to burn more cals than you consume to get that effect......yashicamat...stick at it...we all go through that phase when you cant seem to shift that last bit!!.....dont give in just keep doing what you are

Re: Beer belly

The other point, which no-one's mentioned, is to eat and drink little and often through the day, rather than have 1 big meal and a pint (not necessarily beer, diet fizz is just as bad in this respect) at dinner time. This stops food stretching your stomach.

Re: Beer belly

Here's my routine pretty much:

I'm exercising 4 times a week, usually on the rowing machine or by cycling/walking in the hills. I am concentrating on burning at least 300 calories on a workout (probably doesn't mean much really, but it's a good a way as any of quantifying the amount of exercise I reckon!).

I have cut beer down to one night a week, with the odd cocktail or glass of wine during the week. I am also drinking lots of really cold water as I read an interesting article (which sounds obvious on reflection) that very cold water has to be warmed up by the body, which uses energy!
I have also cut my caffiene intake right down, am drinking roobios tea instead, probably has little relevance on the diet side of things, but I reckoned I was consuming too much caffiene anyway! More water during the day too.

Food wise, I am eating more fruit (inc. dried) for snacks during the day, having a medium breakfast (couple of slices of toast with . . . marmite ), lunch consists something in the order of a wholemeal roll with low fat cream cheese and salad, piece of fruit and a low fat yoghurt. Dinner is mostly carbs with some protein as well, for example noodles with sugarsnap peas, broccolli etc., or pasta with a tomato and basil sauce, occasionally a bit of grated cheese on top (just a bit). Sad as it may be, but when it comes to meals I am to a certain extent calorie counting for things like cheese etc., to make sure I'm not consuming more than I think I am.

At bedtime it's a pint of orange juice / water half and half mixed.

Are there any areas which are looking like they need improvement? Bearing in mind on the diet front I'm a vegetarian, so no meat or fish.

Cheers.

Re: Beer belly

Looking at the numbers again, you seem to have lost 4 x 3lbs a week over one month (12.2 to 11.3 = 13lbs divide by four). That seems a lot to me. I'm wondering if you should slow down and allow your body to stabilise a bit and not worry if your weight increases a bit till it sorts itself out.

It seems to me (I am not a doctor) that you have recognised that healthy eating is good, but it seems like you are going at it hammer and tongs on all fronts. Perhaps calm down a little? Consider if you need to take any vitamin supplements (with doctor's advice being veggie). Perhaps add more pulses (meaning beans of one sort or another).

My bottom line would be to calm down and take it slower, cos either you or your body will say "had enough" if you keep going at the adrenaline rate you seem to be at just now. Perhaps stand back, take stock, and decide on a long term forward plan - Rome wasn't built in a day.

Feel free to ignore this.

Best
Mo

Re: Beer belly

Well done Rob, losing so much weight when you were hardly overweight to begin with is very surprising. I do hope you are not overdoing the dieting thing a bit too much though. Going off what the telly people say on Fat Club etc, that would be too much really and possibly you will not be doing yourself too much good in the short run.

I struggle a little more to keep my weight off now that I’m slowly getting older and find that exercise alone isn’t really enough anymore. I used to jump on my Turbo trainer and try to burn as much over 400 calories in half and hour as I could, but I find that hard at the moment as I’m a little out of condition presently. So well done for sticking to your regime and I hope you keep up the healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life
