Beer Prices

Whilst on the subject of tax and fuel costs it prompted me on the cost of Beer.

Over the last week I have paid:

£3.60 for a pint of Stella in London City Airport
€0.56 (39p) for a 500ml tin of San Miguel (5.4%) in a Barcelona Supermarket
€3.00 (£2.09) for a Bottle of San Miguel in Barcelona Hotel Mini Bar
£2.40 for a Pint of Stella at the local.

Oh and the local Bargin Booze is doing 24 x 500ml tins of Stella for £18.99 IIRC

Talk about rip off Britain

Re: Beer Prices

In the last week, I have paid 90p for a pint of mild and £1.40 for a pint of Boddingtons. And 12 bottles of Brahma for about £8.

Probably less about rip off Britain as you shopping in the wrong places...

Re: Beer Prices

I don't look at the price that way (unless it's stupid, like the aforementioned airport price), I basically say that if I enjoy the drink, then it's worth it.
I like good pale ale, kept well. My local sells it for between £1.90 (for below 4% abv) to £2.00 (5.2% abv). My mates at uni scoff at this, telling me that they pay all of about £1.20 or so a pint, but I doubt it's got the quality.

Some examples:

Pale Rider, 5.2% - £2.00
Deuachars IPA 3.8% (?) - £1.90
Pictish, Brewers Gold - £1.90
Alchemists Ale - £1.95

Just a small selection that will be famaliar to the ale enthusiasts out there!

Re: Beer Prices

Incidentally, I know someone who lives in Sweden who pays £5 for a pint of proper Ale!
I don't know if any of our Swedish members could verify this?

Rip off London is the problem

One of my locals has started charging £3.15 for a pint of San Miguel

Yet this weekend I went to a club in Wellinborough, and drank many a pint of the same stuff for £2.70. You wouldn't get a pint of p*ss in a London club for £2.70!

I seriously feel myself reverting to the old man pubs which haven't jumped on the bandwagon of seeing just how much they can take the mickey before they lose all their customers - because that's what most pubs around my way seem to be doing. And if you go to clubs around here, it's not uncommon to be relieved of £10 for a vodka redbull, if you're dumb enough to buy one in a club!

The tax on alcohol is pretty high in Sweden (and indeed a lot of the Scandinavian countries). I know people who've been to Sweden a couple of months back, was about 4-5Euros they said - guess it depends where they drink though (and they said it was "a beer" rather than "a pint").

Talking along those lines, how come a pint of Shandy is the same price as a pint of Beer, is that how the publican makes his money on Shandys & mixers for that matter.

Re: Beer Prices

When running a student bar a few years ago we worked out that pepsi and lemonade etc from the pump cost about 9p per pint including cleaning the glass, paying the staff at minimum wage plus a little, the machines, the syrup and the gas and the water.

9p a pint and they sell it at £2 in some places.

I paid around a Fiver for a half of some dodgy lager in Amsterdam a few months ago in a 'normal' bar near, but not in, the RLD. I also paid around 45 quid for 5 pints in a strip club in the RLD... that'll teach me for going to such places

Rob.
A beer is about 40-45 Kroner in Stockholm in an average place, that's about 3 quid (ish). I'd say that prices are roughly the same as London, if not a little cheaper sometimes (spirits for example).

One of the things with alcohol in Sweden is that there isn't competition between off-licences (yeah, I know we're talking about pubs, but it's sort of related!). All off-licences over there are State run - they call them 'System Bolaget' (though you can get low alcohol lager from normal shops - 3.5% stuff).

The missus is Swedish

£2.30 a pint in one of the pubs round here

Shame all the cheap(er) pubs in my area of london are either grandad pubs, or full of 16 year olds with screwfaces and scumbags necking 10 pints of stella then looking for a fight

At least high beer prices and over-21s policy tends to deter the toerags.

Re: Beer Prices

Umm, I would agree.

But I was shown a pub this wekeend that kind of changed things...A round of 4, thats 3 pints of a real ale and a bottle of raspberry beer 4 quid.

Whats amazing is I've used the road this pub is on for countless trips and never seen it.

Was good beer too, open fire; shame we had to drive there really.

Well that'll be the other reason then - if you've got to drive there, it rules out the 14-16 year olds you'd normally find at a Yates or Wetherspoons, and it also puts off the groups of lads who are up for a session and a fight, as a) chances are none will want to drive and stay sober (although some just ignore the second bit) and b) if they have to drive there, they can't pound seven shades out of some underserving stranger on the stumble home
