| Beginner's Electric Guitar I want to learn the electric guitar and am looking for a fairly basic setup to get me started - I've seen this one on eBay, is it any good? Seems quite a reasonable price. eBay.co.uk: Complete Electric Guitar Package with amp - Red (item 140073597514 end time 21-Jan-07 17:10:46 GMT) Cheers. ![]()

| Briskodian | Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar Hello As my son is a fairly recent newcomer to guitar playing (couple of years or so), he might have a view and be able to refer to websites he visits for queries, plus his own "newcomer" experience of what to look out for. I'll ask him to have a look. Sorry, no guarantees from me as I know nothing. Regards Mo |

| Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar I'd say if anything your better to spend a bit more and get a reasonable guitar, than just go for one thats cheap. Try and avoid guitars fitted with floating tremolo's if its your first guitar. I bought an Ibanez RG with a floating trem, and its a pain to tune, but once its tuned it holds it fairly well. The guitar was round about £240, and then I spent about £100 on a Marshall Amp. You can get cheaper amps quite easily though, but its always worth spending the most you can afford on the guitar. This is the site I got my stuff from GAK - Guitars, Amps, Keyboards, Pro-audio, Drums, Samplers & more

| Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar My brother got an amp and guitar for xmas. Having had a listen it seems really good. His was an amp and guitar, the amp although small is loud enough to make the neighbours unhappy. Not sure of where the package was purchased, send a pm to "vincent vega" I am sure he will reveal all. You will need to buy a guitar tuner as well.

| Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar I haven't played for years (I never had any talent anyway). I was thinking of getting a cheap guitar again to pass the time. I always hated the cheap fender copies. I had a westone spectrum something or other - it was a cheapo when I bought it, but quite collectable now. I binned it - doh! Even if you get a cheap guitar it might be worth getting it professionally set up. I thought this looked OK: Shop for Yamaha ERG121 'Pro Pack' Electric Guitar. at Argos.co.uk They've got a cheap Encore that might just be OK too. |

| Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar Sorry, I'm with Razor, Schern & Kandy on this. Don't skimp. A cheap unbranded or low-end guitar with some CCH Tranny Amp wil make you give up quicker than anything else. Squier Fender pack (Strat & practice amp) can be easily had for under £100 from somewhere like Sound Control or Dawsons Music. Ditto the Yamaha Pacifica 02 packs - the necks on the yamaha's are, if anything, flatter, smaller and smoother than the Fenders, so even easier for beginners. Usually well built and sound better than comparable Squiers too....... However, it pays to actually got to the shop and try a few - don't be afraid of asking the assistant to play them so you can listen to them - making sure they play them through the amps that come with, rather than a posh one (ie my tele sounds ok with a tranny amp, but only comes alive on a valve amp) Last edited by Gwilo; 21-01-2007 at 22:00. |

| Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar When I started I had a beginners kit like that and I struggled hard as the components were poor and quality was awful. When I had the cash and had improved I bought a proper Fender Strat and a reasonable amp and this made life very easy with much more rewarding results. I personally prefer practicing and learning on an acoustic model as it gives you the best of both worlds. I agree with the above dont skimp unless you dont think you will carry on..

| Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar May I make a suggestion dude? First, get yourself a spanish guitar and practice on that. It will have a fat neck too. Take the proper lessons and all, and ace it. Once you master that, playing on an electric will be dead easy. As for the electric, look for a 24 fret electric first. If you're going to properly begin, you might as well start with 24 as you'll be learning the different scales & harmonies going up and down that fretboard.

| Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar I popped into a local shop and got a Yamaha Pacific setup. But I am having difficulty getting my hand into the right position, and that's not to mention the difficulty with the fingerwork. Beginning to wonder if I made the right choice now . . . ![]()

I'd second the Yamaha suggestions. Squiers aren't bad either, and Vintage are worth a look too.

| Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar If you can pick up a few basic chords its surprising how many tunes are easily played. The tinternet as you probably know has a wealth of easy to use guides. When you are that bit more confident look into tablatures. Fairly simple with practice like all of this

You'll be amazed what a bit of persistence can achieve - chord shapes and stretches that seem physically impossible at the outset just become second nature.

| Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar If you get a cack guitar you will get a cack impression of what playing is like. I have at one point played them all and I know the best guitar I currently own spoilt everything I played after because nothing I have played since comes close to the quality. However, I have found some amazingly good very inexpensive pieces of kit; Yamaha PACIF012 KIT (GAK) The basic Yamaha Pacifica series has always been great value, they are always slightly more than the cheapest out there but they are of a far better quality. The build is better, the wood is better, the electronics are better and the neck is better. have a look but never sell yourself short. The cheapest isn't always the best. |

| Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar Stairway to Heaven (obvious I know) is a good one to learn. I've also learnt the intro to Sweet Child Of Mine, although I haven't perfected it yet. A lot of Nirvana stuff is pretty easy as its mainly power chords. Just have a tinker and see how you get on. To be honest I can spend ages just making loads of distorted noise and getting feedback from the guitar by sitting next to the amp. Makes me feel special lol.

| Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar McGuffin, the neck of the fret board on a Spanish guitar is significantly thicker than on an electric. The idea is too purchase a cheap Spanish guitar, practice on that for a long while, perfect your skills, and then the move on to electric is easy. I started with electric, and then got an acoustic guitar a while later....was a little difficult hitting the noted I wanted because of the fact I got used to the thin neck on the electric and hitting the notes on the acoustic was a little more difficult. There's nothing difficult to understand, I advised this based on experience ![]()

| Re: Beginner's Electric Guitar I think initially learning on acoustic helps you develop cleaner fingering and better musicality. You can hear poorly fretted notes and notice more feeling (empasis etc.) that is rather disguised by electronic distortion/sustain. |
