Smile A bit more responsbilty in the team

Hi all,

Got called over by my team manager today, thinking what had I done wrong I got a bit worried, but it turns out she wants me to cover for her in the case that she ever goes off ill and take control of the figures ie take charge of the team in her absence and cover the figures, attend team meetings and pass onto the information to the team.

Going forward (sorry for the business speak!!) it means I better myself in my job and chances for promotion or another job in a management position.

Quite happy but worried what this entails.

Re: A bit more responsbilty in the team

I'd say it's more meetings, less 'what is perceived as actual work' - that said I find that in reality I get to attend lovely meetings like that regardless of my position when anything semi-important needs to be decided as they don't know when they get that high up - outta touch

I'd just take the opportunity and enjoy it, worst case it goes wrong & you'll have the experience to get a position elsewhere based on that experience

That's good news Surely you and Skodagirl deserve something of that, too!

Remember the Peter Principle: "In a Hierarchy Every Employee Tends to Rise to His Level of Incompetence" - hopefully you have a few more steps ahead of you unlike some of the grey-bearded members here

If only that were true!

Be very careful that your boss doesn't use it as an excuse to delegate on occasions that she is in the office! I ended up as office IT manager at my last works (for no extra pay or reduction in expected output on my 'day job') after fixing a dodgy printer and saying to the boss "If there's anything else like that you want me to do..."

But keep your eyes and ears open, and your head screwed on, and like you say, it could be a leg-up on the ladder!

Re: A bit more responsbilty in the team

thats what worries me, she has got a poor sickness record so not wanting to be taking a loan off, but she does seem genuine about the aspect of development for me.

Well if she has a poor record, just make sure you do a better job than her, and maybe you'll get to step in full time.

Hi. As ap0gee mentioned, I'd be inclined to ensure that your team manager is also making similar arrangements for someone to cover your work in the event that your time is unduly eroded by extra tasks and meetings (or you'll be paid overtime). All good CV stuff though

Very true, discussed this with her yesterday so hoping this action point will be taken on, it's a bit of a change sitting in on managers meetings and still getting my head round it but it's ok, might be diffrent when she is off on her holiday in the next couple of weeks.

Re: A bit more responsbilty in the team

Just taken my first team meeting and have never been so scared in my life, but it went down well and the team rallied me on a bit so made it a bit easier still shaking from taking it but glad it's over, think I'm going to have work on my confidence a bit.

Re: A bit more responsbilty in the team

I'm a bit calmer the now, having people in the team saying to me well done now.

Did not help the day as I had to brief the senior managers as well about what we want to acheive for the weekend.

In a couple of weeks time I will be lookingh after the team and taking the meetings in the managers absence.

Re: A bit more responsbilty in the team

Just thought I would give a wee update to how this going:

Last week I was in charge of the team and had to report to the management daily with the team figures and dishing out work to staff.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were really tough for me with that guy I had the arguement with but from Wednesday afternoon things came accross very good, the team were meeting their targets even through we had to get help and one of the senior managers told me that my team manager should take more time off more often and let me in charge.

I was today sent a e-mail saying that I worked very professional over the course of the week and that I was well prepared for every meeting.

By Friday our team were on course for hitting zero in the q which is a first in a wee while. We never made it but I did get the team into a good position for Monday and it looks like we are going to have a good week again.

I'm having a week of management duties and back on next week.

But it feels good to be recognised for doing good works.
