Boiler Problems

This is something I plead a total lack of knowledge too, but I can imagine whatever is wrong is going to be expensive!

We have a combi boiler and I think it is made by IER or something like that. What keeps happening is when a hot tap is turned on the boiler fails to ignite. I have to switch the boiler off or use the reset switch and turn the tap on again for the flame to kick in,

Is there some kind of sensor that detects a hot tap being turned on that is broken?

We had a Worcester that was similar - got steadily worse.
Ours was a diaphragm vale in which the rubber was perishing so water was flowing through it.
May be similar. All I can suggest other than have a word with friends for someone to look at it (need to be qualified - forget the name, though - HAH Corgi qualified).
We got ours done by a relative of a relative who installed / repaired for the Council
£100 two years ago (and that was cheap).

Re: Boiler Problems

We had similar too, flow sensor changed, all ok now. do have Centrica cover though, so no cost at time.
I would try & find a friend of a friend if you don't have cover, as it could be expensive.

Hope you get it sorted anyway, good luck.

Re: Boiler Problems

I had similar (on a Potterton), and it turned out to be some air pressure sensor. There are lots of points of failures which all give you the same symptons, and if you are really unsure as to go about, get someone qualified in... you don't want to mess with gas.

What you can do (if you can bare it another 2 months or so), is get gas cover on the boiler, then report it as a fault in 2 months time after the initial period has expired...

Re: Boiler Problems

Might also be worth checking that the internal system pressure is up as well. I'm no expert but when my wife was in her flat and had a similar problem it turned out that the internal pressure had dropped below a preset value and as such the boiler would not fire up for safety reasons. It was an easy fix that was explained in the manual and was obvious from a pressure dial on the boiler?

Re: Boiler Problems

We recently moved house.British Gas just been in(annual service) and condemned the boiler. Its too old for us to claim on our policy

With all the new regs(thanks John Prescott) its going to cost us about £3k for a new one(fitting etc ) so I hope yours is fixable

Apparantly the new ones are a pain /generally not reliable but we've got to have one .

Bit off topic.Sorry.Just get a corgi registered man in

Re: Boiler Problems

Not much hel this but I had a problem with the boiler in my old house that wouldn't ignite and when it was looked at the reason the pilot light wouldn't ignite was because a moth was stuck in it and the spark couldn't ground.

Beware of what British Gas tell you and get an independant check. We had one guy from BG tell us similar but when I called them to ask specifics (I wasn't there at the time) another BG man came out and said that whilst it didn't meet current guidance (it did date from the 60's!) it was fine and just needed a bit of fettling.

We did subsequently replace the boiler a couple of years later but didn't go with BG who quoted about £3200 for the boiler, controls and associated plumbing work. A small local Corgi registered plumber did it for £1800 and gave us exactly what we wanted rather than what BG happened to want to sell us!

Re: Boiler Problems

Have you tried searching on the internet? The reason why I ask is my sister had a similar issue in her house, a bit of searching and it turned out to be a minor thing (something silly like a setting or tap) that she sorted herself in minutes.

Re: Boiler Problems

What is the consensus of opinion on these £7-£10 per month heating cover deals?

Personally I think it's like all insurance - we legally have to take out car insurance but if given the choice why bother? If it needs fixing then you pay what's required, and if not you don't. Or you can pay ten quid a month on the off-chance that you might have a problem?
