Briskoda popularity

I just had a look at the number of people currently online and i am quite surprised.

50 members logged on, and 106 guests!!

I would love to know if these guests are soka owners and potential members, or other marque owners who have an interest in skodas. Pity they can't be polled

Re: Briskoda popularity

Quite a few of them will be bots from the various search engines checking what's new on the site.

Re: Briskoda popularity

It also depends on whether it counts spiders etc as guests (for example Googlebot etc) or not.

Either way the site is impressively busy

I often come on at 10-11pm US time (4-5am UK time) and it's just one or two named members and anywhere between 10 and 60 guests/bots/spiders.

I'd bet money that at least one person viewing but not posting is sat in a nice office in Milton keynes with a logo on the outside that looks just like the one on my Octavia steering hweel.

The 106 guests could be Skoda Customer services and the "You no longer have a warranty dept"..............

Probably even more than one person, maybe a whole department

Re: Briskoda popularity

There was a thread on this a few months ago which said that spiders/bots didn't get taken into the online count.

That would imply that all viewers are proper people

Yes, but by the same token, is there really a need? It's not like Briskoda is "underground", and it has nothing to hide from SUK...besides which, if they really wanted to see what was going on here, it wouldn't be hard for them to work around an IP address ban...

^ It was a 'throwaway comment'

But, I am glad you responded as I did wonder if it was technically possible to IP a whole organisation on the web. Although from what you say it seems it's also technically possible for an organisation to workaround an IP ban too?!

Well...the assumption would be that the organisation use the same network which is connected to the outside world via a proxy - it would be the IP address of this proxy which the outside world would see.

So it would be possible to block this proxy's IP address to prevent the organisation accessing the site, but all they'd need to do is find another way onto the internet which doesn't go via the proxy, so their IP address will no longer match that which is banned.
This could be as simple as getting employees to dial up to a free ISP...

The above is a fairly simplistic overview of how it works, if you want to know the gory details have a browse on t'interweb for "htaccess"...

When I'm browsing the forums at work I don't log in, hence would be a 'guest' so that's one accounted for!
