| Briskodian | Re: Britain Day FWIW I confess to being puzzled. I understand that some believe we should blow our own trumpet to counter our tendency to take a modest line, but I don't understand what is expected to be achieved (Especially since the BNP, i.e. British National Party, will no doubt be delighted ![]() As a multicultural country where one is lucky enough to be able to express his or her view, the idea of flying a flag (as if going into battle in armoured suits on horses) seems slightly odd to me since the country is rarely united (i.e. unanimous) on any issue. Moving towards the idea of having British cheerleaders is something I'm sure many would cringe at, but just my opinion is all. Mo |

| Re: Britain Day I'm with Andy! Though I cant see the point of it! Nout to be proud off with this country! As for St.Georges day, whats that my council will not let people fly the flag as is may cause racial tension between people. Yet St.Patricks day is allowed. weird ![]()

But we should not forget our heritage just because we are now "muliticultural" this tiny island once presided over the largest empire the world has ever seen. It stood alone in the face of Nazi opression until the Japanese bombed pearl harbour, defeated the French (many times). The sad thing is that the flag is slowly being associated with lunatics like the bnp, so what is wrong with Browns suggestion to take it back and make it something to be proud of. If it means an extra day off then thats cool with me, but why not take a day just to celebrate being british, regardless of your colour or religion?

I mean you live in England right, its the English flag is it not? Next year make a point of putting up as many English flags as you can on St. Georges day.

On topic though, Brown has taken great pains to stress that it's meant to be "British" day, though several surveys have shown that no-one really knows what being British is meant to stand for. If anyone could agree on that, perhaps a new symbol could be added to the flag. There's quite a lot in our earlier history that I don't feel particularly proud about at all (Crusades, slavery, colonisation by force et al); "current" might be a better celebration, but Britain is not really special in that many countries promote good causes. If I'm in any way representative, I'd be happy to celebrate if I knew what I was celebrating. Can someone provide a few pointers please? Mo

Being rich is not really an accolade in my book, since that's probably true of any country which has learned to exploit others and has not suffered from the droughts, famines and political disingenuousness of funds distribution that other countries have/do. We are lucky IMO that Britain is in a temperate zone; also that our exports now survive more from the knowledge market than the goods market (the latter of which we have few; heaven help our reliance on others if push comes to shove) to the extent that, like many others, we are at the behest of others - in our case probably most particularly those who can supply energy to us. Anyone have such a list? Mo

Agree with everything you've posted, and good link on St George too. Not that being rich is of itself something to celebrate but it does mean that every single one is vastly better off than about 98% of everyone alive today or who has ever lived. We are also a secular society, a reasonable society, a liberal society, and so IMHO streets ahead of larger economies like the US and China both of which have appalling injustice and inequality. All things being equal though I'd still rather live in Japan, they just have the better gadgets Definitely the planets biggest whingers though. Also interesting to reflect that St George was either Turkish, Syrian or Palestinian, had military training and while he was happy to go and live in the Roman empire, criticised it and refused to renounce his faith. While he never set foot in this country, if he did come today how would he be viewed by the Daily Mail-reading flag-wavers? Don't think he'd be beatified anyway ![]()
