British seaside advice

Help.

SWMBO's birthday is coming up, and she wants to go somewhere British seaside. I'm **** at this sort of thing as she normally does holiday things.

If it's any indication, we like traditional seaside, Piers, Victorian buildings etc, we're not bothered about clubs, but like pubs. A few nice restaurants would be good, and a comfortable but not shockingly expensive hotel would be nice. Reasonable journey time from Birmingham is a plus point too. We quite like Llandudno, but we've been there a few times. Weymouth was OK last time we went (probably 10-12 years ago now).

I'd wondered about Weston-super-mare, but it seems it may be a bit run down- anyone live nearby?

Any other suggestions?

Re: British seaside advice

I am biased but i love the east coast. Scarbrough etc.

You can stay in a decent hotel there and then you have the North York Moors at your disposal. The railway there is a good day out as well even if your not really into steam trains

Re: British seaside advice

Weymouth is quite nice, can help with info for there if you need it.

Portsmouth area is sort of seaside but with more emphasis on other things to do.

Re: British seaside advice

I'll have to agree with the Yorkshire suggestion - Scarborough and Whitby are both great places and it's a cracking drive across the moors. I have to say I prefer Whitby myself: a nice traditional little place with loads of character and history. I've only ever been there on day trips though so I can't suggest any nice hotels/pubs but i do know the fish n' chips are good.

Duly noted and crossed off.

VRStu: How far from town is the Premier Inn at Weymouth?

mattbeef: Good call. We called in there a year ago and liked it.

Thanks all, keep it coming.

Re: British seaside advice

Weston-super-mud is ok for a quick day trip but nothing special and I wouldn't want a holiday there.

Torquay is very much "traditional british" with a decent beach and a good selection of hotels plus a fair amount to do in the area - Torbay , Paignton (both more of the same) and Brixham (little fishing village) are a short drive away.
Good restaurants for the evening , and plenty of pubs too.

Other than that , I'm very partial to Newquay in Cornwall which is a fair bit further and can be quite "stag do" at nights which may not be your thing , but it's still very traditional and again has a wide choice of hotels and guest houses.

Third option is the Isle of Wight which is always worth a look

Been that way quite recently, but yes, very nice.

Last time I was there it was a bit "stag do" for us.

Re: British seaside advice

Down my way is good. Exmouth/Budleigh nice to start, then for a bit more commercial, there's the Riviera (Torbay). Plus you also got Sidmouth/Seaton and the whole Jurassic coast, which is very nice (apart from Charmouth where the coast is a little unstable at the moment )

If based down here you also have north Devon coast too, but there's not much up there really. South and East Devon is generally better for the grockles, I mean tourists.

I've always been a fan of the south coast, Hastings, Eastbourne, Pevensy, Bexhill kind of direction.

Re: British seaside advice

I can totally recommend scarborough, whitby etc I've been going to scarborough for 24 years since I was a nipper and recommend it, got to admit it's not the same as the years go by it but there is a nice park Peasholm Park, Olivers Mount, Two bays, miniture railway.

Take in the navel warfare (model boats shooting at each other) every thursday and saturday and for wee drives you can drive the moors and visit all the coastal towns or visit the land of Heartbeat.

Flamingo land is about 22 miles drive from scarborough for all your fun fair needs.

Hope this helps

Place I would recomend in scarborough is the Kenton hotel.

Davy

I would say Brighton is pretty traditional but also has so much more to offer for a great weekend. The IOW is carp, don't come here.

It's actually fairly central in Weymouth (more accurately on one of the roads out of Weymouth) and walking distance to the seafront.
