Angry Cats

I am getting pretty fed up of the cats in our garden now. They scare the birds / squirrels and leave presents everywhere in the garden (which today one of which was hiding in the long grass and was consumed by the lawnmower, creating a mess like you wouldn't believe. Not a pleasant job to clean up.).

Does anyone know a way to keep cats out of the garden but without repelling all the birdlife at the same time? We've got quite a nice collection of birds in the garden now and it'd be a great shame to see them (and one of their primary food sources, our feeders) being forced out.

Just wondering if something along the lines of an ultrasonic thingy or something? The neighbours don't have any pets and neither do we, but I don't know if they affect birds though.

Cheers.

Re: Cats

The ultrasonic thing is good, my grandad helps out at his local bowling club and they have this to keep cats of the green, another top tip is to pretend to fill up a glass of water and throw it at them if you catch them, they do get scared by water, but as long as there is no water in it you should be fine just gives them the impression there is water in there

They have been "shot" with the hosepipe several times, but these ones are evidently hardy buggars.

Re: Cats

I think there is a spray in the garden shops called get off my garden. Sure my dad used that to keep cats away a few year ago.
Also I think black pepper is good but that might scare the birds and that off too.

Yeah, that sounds interesting. I know the capsican (the spicy bit in chillis) is only detectable by mammals (and not birds) so wonder if that spray works on that basis.

I could tell you my grandads secret when he was younger!!

Mind you he does have a super soaker in his celler which has a good aim from the top of his steps that lead down to the back garden.

Part of our problem is our garden actually slopes up at a gradient of about 1 in 4 so it's very hard to actually propel stuff up the garden. Plus, what with rockeries, a large bush etc., getting a reliable line of sight is tricky.

Looking for more of a deterrant really as I'm sure they're in the garden a lot more than we see them.

I like cats as well but there is there odd exception when they dig up your freshley laid plants and ruin all the hard work you have done, I am honestly sure my nect door neighbours cat is jumping onto the roof of my car at night, can't prove it but looks like we claw marks.

Hi yashicamat,

I think that you should be making the phone call this day to the Lord Bath, and then be telling the wife, that you are bringing home the lion that you are borrowing here, for Sunday tea.
Sit the lion at the table, and feed with the food to bursting point, and then take it to the garden, and let it do the Cr--ing on the garden, and then the pussy cats will stay away here, as the big fellow is on the block.
You are needing to invite the lion to tea many times in the year, so you will be needing half of cow or sheep to be feeding it here, and so get the account with Asda or Sainsbury's.
You must be excusing the lion here as his table manners are not so good, and he may be having a taste for the wife.

Re: Cats

Get your own cat.
That'll keep the neighbours cats off , and they won't dump in their own garden.

On the other hand , are you sure it's actually cat poo in your garden as they prefer to bury or hide it. If it is cats then keeping the lawn short will help

Re: Cats

Our two are bad for it. Luckily our neighbours are keen on cats and don't mind.

There isn't much will stop them. They are very stubborn.

Water pistols will work for some.
The ultrasonics don't work on ours. They sit beside the emitters.

Getting you own cat will work as will getting a dog.

Netting over your plants will work.

I've heard that lion dung will work if you can get it.

Re: Cats

We used an ultrasonic thingy for the back garden (seems to have worked for good now), and still have to use a lemony repellent spray thing on the drive (guess the lure of a warm engine to lie under is too much...!)

I did see a thing that was a motion-activated sprayer that you attached to a hosepipe and which sprayed water whenever something cat-sized or bigger went past. But you'd need to remember to turn that off if you went into the garden yourself!

I love cats, but my Scirocco a few years ago suffered all along the roof by the bloody things sliding along it. They used to leap off the fence.

Time to either upgrade to a pressure washer or get your neighbour to install some catnip in their garden away from yours.

You could have some of our's litter.

He's just coming of age, and it hums. Been using it to keep the neighbours cat at bay - and it's working.

Not all cats dislike citrus, just as not all cats hate water. But it is worth a shot next time you have an orange.

Re: Cats

1) start market gardening and consume and sell your produce. Or merely give it to relatives.
2) Start cats off with the water pistol or hosepipe, progressing through the airgun to the crossbow.

Job done.... Though friends and neighbours will be polarised as to the ethics of the approach depending on whether they used to own a cat.
