A question for those in the know. A couple of radiators in our house, namely the one in the hallway and my daughters bedroom randomly heat up??? The heating is off (has been for many months) so how? Why?

Need more input!

Does the boiler heat a tank of hot water as well?

If so it could be that the diverter valve (two/three way valve) is not staying put and some of the hot water from the tank is leaking back to those radiators.....when you feel the radiators get hot check all the pipes around the diverter valve to see if they are all warm

Sounds about right there.

The Diverter valve may have a manual switch on it which you can move back to keep the water in the hot water circut, rather than it heating up the rads.

Does this make sense ??

What he said. Your diverter valve isn't switching properly. It is a motorised vavle that switches between HW, CH, or both. It's usually near the boiler or the HW cylinder.

Re: Central heating issues

Just changed one for a friend recently.

They are cheap and if you can drain the system you should be able to do it without any issue at all Ross

If you have a 2 way I'd suggest getting a 3 way fitted as it allows:

- Hot water only
- Heating only
- Both hot water and heating.

With a 2 way you always heat the water whether it is needed or not, which will cost you more in terms of gas bills. The cost between a 2 way and 3 way is minimal.

Only if your system is piped for a 3 port, or 2 x 2 ports, a 2 port system is not always suitable for a 3 port v/v If it turns out to be a sticky actuator and not the valve at all there would be no need to break into the system at all and saving a draindown.

That would certainly be my first port of call, try the actuators manually using the wee lever on the side

Re: Central heating issues

Motors can defintiely go on the actuators and from memory they are only cost about a tenner and are a doddle to fit generally.

While we are on the subject any advice on this?:

I occasionally hear a very small amount of air in the system especially into the bathroom radiator which is the one generally on most of the time. All of the rads are on TRV's and the heating is off at the moment. The system is fully pumped with seperate two way valves for hot water and central heating. I've checked everything I can and the boiler has recently been serviced and doesn't appear to be kettling. The system has plenty of anti corrosion stuff in and I've also chucked in a bottle of leak sealant and have tightened up the valve stem seals and sealed round all of the stop valves on the radiators with plumbers mate, all to no avail. The pump is set on 2 of 4 but does seem to go some.

so... could the air in the system be a two way valve not closing properly leading to a vortex and aeration or is it more likely to be a stop valve bleeding in air when the TRV on the other end of the rad closes? It seems to be worse in summer and always seems to happen around the same time, almost as if it is connected to a diverter valve closing or to a room reaching a specific temperature and a TRV closing?

Re: Central heating issues

If the boiler has 4 pipes (2 in, 2 out) then you wont have a diverter valve. What you might find, depending on who did/how good the plumbing is of course is that the 2 radiators concerned have been connected to the wrong part of the circuit and are actually part of the circuit thats used to heat the water in the hot water tank. So, if you have the boiler on "hot water" rather than heating is that when the radiators get hot.

Re: Central heating issues

Yup, sounds like the diverter valve Ross, mine is on the way out.

My rad in the bathroom next to the boiler gets red hot when running the bath.....I know it needs doing nut it dries the towels after use

What boiler you got? We have a bloody Alpha......apparantly notorious for these things going....
