| Cheaper alternative to vrs? Well now I have my job lined up i can fulfill my promise to myself and have a brand new car. The car that has always been in the pipeline is a black fabia vrs with heated seats. Now i have approx 11,500 in my savings account so i am not far off, the thing is now it's for real i am beginning to question whether i need such a car, e.g. 130 bhp. So, i like speed (razzing around/good acceleration rather than flat out top end) I like the value for money you get with the vrs with stuff like air con, elec windows, heated/elec mirrors, cd player etc. Is there anything else on the market that would give me what i wanted with these things but was say more like 8-9 grand as it would be nice to keep a couple of grand for a nice holiday or something. BTW i like hatches e.g. Golf, Polo etc Help me make my way through the fog please !!

| Well the 'Sport' comes with all that, but a 1.2l engine. Or a Fabia Comfort/Elegance with the 1.4 100bhp petrol or 1.9 100bhp derv. There are cracking deals on the Renault Clio as the model is about to be replaced. Nissan Micra the Toyota Aygo in the sporty tim in black looks quite funky. Pug 107/Citroen C1 are similar (well the same) and more cutesy and as they are small are quite nippy

| Hmm - maybe, the heated seats are very much recommended option IMHO if you do decide to go the Furby route. If you want something a tad cheaper, how about a PD100 based one with a little tuning box or something? Not sure how much they are but it should reduce the cost a little. What kinda distances are you likely to be driving?

| Nice ideas with the other Skoda's but the fabia vrs is the only model i would consider from Skoda. Also, not keen on going for an ex demo or a year old as this is a present to myself

| Second hand PD100. It's still quick enough and you can get a lot of the options from a vRS on one. In fact, keep an eye out for an Elegance PD100 and you should have a good spec.

| There's a 10k mile VRS for £10k just been advertised on here. That'll be a better buy than a cheaper new alternative

| If a nearly new is out of the question, then how about a Clio? The Alize is a lovely spec with leather interior... Could be had for £10k I'm sure with a 1.5DCi engine 100bhp... ![]()

| I think you would be hard pushed to find a new car with similar spec for much less money, as the Fabia is bargain basement for what you get as a package already. You could always put 8k down and finance the rest. I've seen some cracking finance on offer at the mo in Skoda dealers. Don't buy a french car though, they are cheap for a reason...

| The car really has to be brand new and if i go over about 9,000 i may as well go for the vrs as it's not a lot more to pay. Definetely don't want finance, doesnt make sense if the money is there anyway. I think i have talked myself into the vrs, just want to be sure as it's quite a big deal for me, we have bought a brand new car before but its my husbands so i was cool about it, now it's my turn and all my hard earned dosh i need to be 100%

| There's a huge huge difference in what you get on a new car for 9k vs 12k (fabia vRS) I can't see anything else in the marketplace today (new) for FvRS money that can come close. |

| Briskodian | Hi Pixi How long are you thinking of keeping the car before you move on? Good question to throw into the pot methinks. Mo |

| Personally I would not buy a new car as the depreciation is astronomical - my Ford Fiesta 1.25LX which I bought new was only worth around 33% of its initial value when I traded it in (for my 02 plate [2 1/2 years old] Octy vRS ) after 3 1/2 years There are many good deals to be had on a 2 or 3 year old car - you just need to be patient. Also after 3 years a modern turbo diesel is only just run in - unless you buy it from one of the nutters on here ![]()

| Buy Used.... ex demo ur gonna save so much money there and yet still get exactly the same car and it will be brand new anyway.... no one cares about numbers on plate anymore... its about the car. At the end of the day you have to be happy with YOUR choice go with what your heart tells you. I could of had a brand new fabia when i was looking but it would of had to of been classic spec... ie bugger all on it and the 1.4 8v (68bhp sluggish). At the dealers was an 8 month old comfort with an astonishly good deal on it... a true true bargin if i ever saw one.... so got that instead, oviously it was "used" but washed you would of never known it had been driven.. oviously been comfort ment i had all the goodies with it i would of nevwer had in the new car and luckly dealer (was ex dem) had specced air con on it.... money i saved buying used ment i could wack sat-nav in and put the alloys on, and had imho a better engine in the 1.2 12v. So imho buy used you will get a better deal (oviously not different equip like me as ur still after the vRS), still have warrantie on it and spare cash can either be used for x number of years insurance, holidays or a few extras for the car, i.e ICE??

| Briskodian | Golfs/Polos will always attract a premium.A one year old car will still look smell and feel like new though and saving £2,000 on a one year old vRS is worth it. As for alternatives in the price bracket, check out the back of What Car magazine. They list all cars up to certain price ranges so you can see all the alternatives. If new,up to £12,000,I can't think of anything better than the fabia.£8,£9k new is only small engined, not so nippy car territory. (finally, how about a nice 3 year old Audi A3 1.8T sport quattro.....you could you know....buying new is not always as much fun ) |

| Briskodian | GET A GRIP MAN You cant go wrong with a VRS. As others have said. the Swindon Fish Brothers dealer is doing 0% up to 4 grand so you could split and finance some and pay some up front. Cheers Lee

Um, I am FEMALE I am kinda limited with where i live, only one dealer and prices are pretty high for second hand. I will keep the car for a good few years unless i really dont like it and i cant see that happening. my hubby's brand new car was an ex demo we got a really good price and we still own it now 5 years later. I would have to be very lucky with the dealer if he got another demo in as i test drove his 54 reg demo and that has gone. like i say, it's not like i can shop around with dealers because of where i live.

| Renault are bringing out a Campus edition of the (current) Clio soon, as the new model is soon to go on sale. I think the deals there will be very good, but as has been mentioned before, the Clio's not a patch on the Fabia in terms of size, quality, reliability and comfort... If I hadn't bought my Fab vRS, I was considering a Daihatsu Copen (but a. it looks dead camp in the metal, and b. a 6' / 16.5 stone bloke just won't fit!) There's nothing that can touch the Fabia for much less money (Suzuki Ignis Sport, and Hyundai Getz Sport are both around 10.5k) - if you're worried about depreciation, I'd concur with the people suggesting a second-hand / ex-demo vRS
