Thumbs down Common Cold

I hate it!

Woke up shivering this morning - had an extra hour in bed until I was able to muster up the strength to get up. Felt "ok" and got to work about 9, and have gradually been going downhill all day - keeping myself going with 2 sugars in my tea instead of my usual mere half a spoon. Neck is gradually aching more and more, my sinuses feel like they're contracting and tightening, eyes hurt a bit, head is aching a little but not too bad (yet )

I hate colds! Any medical treatments welcome, although I'm more of a fan of treating the symptoms and letting the body sweat it out. So, on my way home I'm going to get some Sudafed which in my opinion is the best drug for treating cold (and especially sinus trouble which I hate).

Any other things I could consider / old wives tales etc. All serious of course.

Benylin Day and Night tablets work for me. The daytime ones have paracetamol and a decongestant, and the night time ones have paracetamol and a different decongestant that helps you sleep. Work for me every time.

Dad was making his homemade cherry tomato soup yesterday... Wish I'd stayed there for a bit longer to take a sample - He makes the best there is, with fresh basil in, and lots of trimmings (probably unhealthy but tastes luvverly )

My passion for food is yet to be tarnished yet. Sure I'll have a good hearty tea tonight.

Drink a pint of cold Fosters Lager.

Honest, worked for me once with a cold, felt rotten, had a drink, cured.

And if it don't work, doesn't really matter!

Vicks First Defence, a new product, is rumoured to be good.

Link about it here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/liv...74&in_a_source=

I'd agree with that - works wonders for sore throats too, especially if it's lovely and cold. Not great first thing in the morning though - best to stick to the Beechams then

On the matter of soup, I echo JRHartley's suggestion of chicken soup specifically, recalling some scientific evidence or other. This site gives the gen:

http://www.cookinglight.com/cooking/...734808,00.html

That site also refers to the usual Vit C, garlic etc, including that Aztecs set their store by chilis, since these cause the nose to run, thus flushing away the "baddies" quickly before they got chance to spread into the system. On that basis, it would seem to cast a shadow on the wisdom of using those medicines which stop the nose from running. It also includes the "hot toddy"

Another site referring to the same experiments about chicken soup says that shop-bought is good if not better than home made, according to this list (USA items):

(Quote) Here's the list of brand name soups Rennard used - in order of how effective they were in slowing the progress of colds and flu.

Knorr's Chicken Flavor Chicken Noodle
Campbell's Home Cookin' Chicken Vegetable
Campbell's Healthy Request Chicken Noodle
Lipton Cup-O-Soup, Chicken Noodle
Progresso Chicken Noodle
Grandma's Soup
Health Valley 100% Natural Chicken Broth
Healthy Choice Thick and Heart Country Vegetable
Progresso Hearty Vegetable and Pasta
Campbell's Vegetarian Vegetable
Campbell's Vegetable Soup with Beef Stock
Health Valley Fat Free Garden Noodle
Cup O' Noodles, Oriental Nissin
Campbell's Ramen Noodles, Chicken Flavor
(End quote)

Taken from here:

http://chetday.com/coldfluremedy.htm

Re Keeping warm, a woolly scarf tied around the waist (small of the back) has a lot to be said for it, to give support as well as heat, and like JRH said, a couple of aspirin as well IMO.

Best

This is supposed to be the Hotel.

I like the idea of getting rat-arsed! Wonder if there's any other poisons I could take? I don't smoke, don't shoot up with anything, hmmmm.

Saaahhhh!

Jason, you gotta know already at this stage of the game that having a cold is about the worst "normal" thing one can suffer from that generates utter misery and self-pity and that the only thing that really helps is wandering around helplessly looking for love and sympathy. Get straight onto it my friend

BTW that is a serious rather than a Cafe comment and despite being a mine of useless info, I've never heard of anything (including substances) that work better than TLC. Anyone, anywhere?

Best

I've always been of the philosophy of fighting it out! But to get through work requires vast quantities of drugs, sadly there's nothing here stronger than tea, so I've been downing the Sudefed, which has helped keep the worst symptoms at bay. Still a bit bunged up and my sinuses ache, but I've felt worse. Was in work at 8.30 so couldn't have been too bad. Also the sudafed (and Fosters ) helped me sleep last night.

Got some homemade slo vodka at home - might knock myself out with some of that tonight. It was brewed about 3 years ago so should have some serious punch now.

A friend of mine recommends going to bed with a bottle of malt whisky and a wooly hat.....

Put the wooly hat on the end of the bed, drink the whisky, and when you can see two wooly hats you will have forgotten about your cold!
