I get my water supplied by Yorkshire Water. Can I change to another Water Company for a better deal. I've looked in to a meter but with the amount of water we use don't think it would be worth it .......... Anyone

I dont think water is like gas and electric where you can switch at will.

Have a look at www.uswitch.com

Re: Cos I live Ooooopp Norff....

Yeah I toyed with this recently and it doesn't appear to be like the other utilities, so I'm stuck paying £30 a month to Southern (lack of!) Water.... I did consider a meter to save some money, but was concerned that it may put off potential buyers in the future.....

Re: Cos I live Ooooopp Norff....

You can't change your water provider.

Meters save you money which is why the water companies don't want them to become compulsary.

You'll be supplied how much a meter saves. In our house there are four of us. The power shower is used at least four times a day, the washing machine and the dishwasher are used at least once a day and we still make a saving.

I have a friend who is a tight arsed accountant and he has switched over to a meter.

I don't think you'd have problems selling your house with a meter as all new houses have to have them fitted anyway.

If you decided to have a meter fitted you can return to unmeasured billing within 12 months if you wish but the next person to own your house would be on measured billing.

Personally I'd say try it for six months.

Re: Cos I live Ooooopp Norff....

Hi ag.

It used to be the case that if premises already have a water meter, either because it's a requirement of new-builds, or because a previous owner elected to have one, then one was stuck with it. IOW the idea is to get everyone onto meters eventually.

However, if one elected to install one, it was possible to un-elect it within 12 months and then go back to whatever standard rate applies. Can you "un-elect" in your area? (some have changed the rules) Of course (paranoid hat), once a meter is in place, there's nothing to stop them introducing legislation in the future that if you have a meter, it has to be used.

Meters may be genuinely cheaper for water companies as people will be more cautious, so current differential savings might be genuine. Of course when virtually everyone is on a meter, there'll be no need to offer change-over savings incentives.

Immediately, I'd see if you could have a meter uninstalled, and if you can uninstall, see what pricing is like a year from now (well, a year minus any notice period if uninstall is possible).

I think I've just blown my "person of few words" intention again

Regards
Mo

Thye won't uninstall the meter they'll just switch you from measured billing to unmeasured billing in their fabulous Alto application.

Re: Cos I live Ooooopp Norff....

An aside, but on-topic really, my gas boiler went wrong recently. The repair engineer in conversation said that it was now being recognised how much water goes down the drain before the boiler fires up, so as to produce the desired hot water at the outlet tap.

I guess this means that there's a usual amount of cold water in the pipes, given the distance twixt boiler and outlet, but that gas boilers lose a lot of water until they spring to life.

I'm not up on latest technology LOL, but if thinking of installing a new water-heating system...

Regards
Mo

Re: Cos I live Ooooopp Norff....

It's catch 22 with Gas Boliers, Combi Boilers were the way to go and save on Gas as you are not constantly heating up a tank of cold water, that you use a bowl full off, it refills with cold water and reheats etc etc. Howeever with a Combi you just heat the water you use but it does take time initially to get hot especially first thing in the morning wasting a couple of litres of water depending on how good the Combi is.

Have a Combi myself saved a fortune on Gas as only used for Water & Heating, but don't have a Water Meter and no way would I, not with two young children, washer on daily and baths for them and the wife. BTW what is it with women who prefer baths over showers? prefer a shower myself.

But being up north we have plenty of water, not enough sun though

Yup! Definitely a bath then a shower, since showers on their own don't take anything like the amount of time needed to commandeer the bathroom

Wouldn't mind swapping a bit of sun for more daylight hours What time's lighting up time Ooop North?

PS IIRC People with medical conditions requiring greater water usage can apply to have their bills capped (not at 50p mind), despite having a meter.

I have a medical condition which requires I drink water at least ever 2 weeks otherwise it could be fatal...do you think this would qualify?

Re: Cos I live Ooooopp Norff....

Our previous house wa son a water meter and we used about £120 every 6 months. Now our un-metered bill is £120 for the whole year

IIRC There was a trial in the south west a few years ago where domestic customers could choose their water provider. Not sure what happened with it but a web search may reveal some answers.

Otherwise you have to use 50000m3 of water per year at single premises before you're allowed to choose.
