Did you vote?

Just wondered if people bothered to vote in the local elections yesterday?

Our local council has been Labour since the 80's but last time around it swung to Conservative. Since then the town has slowly been filling with litter, the hedges are overgrown and they've taken the dog poo bins out of the parks

I always like to vote for an independant but the choices for me were very limited. In the end it seems to have stayed Conservative.

Re: Did you vote?

Didn't bother - ultimately they're all a bunch of self-serving arrogant ******* who don't seem to be able to do anything constructive, and would rather just dwell on how bad the competition is rather than how good they are.

The only thing I could see my vote influencing was which particular bunch of self-serving ******* got the opportunity to run the town further into the ground...

Ditto the above.

I had the pleasure of dealing with a local council when I was a secretary at a local football club which played in the FA "football pyramid" and what Rob has said describes the bloke down to a tee

Re: Did you vote?

Didn't vote, but only because there were no elections in my district.

One thing that always makes me laugh is people who dont vote but then moan about whoever is in power, sorry but if you didn't vote you have no right to complain.

Have to disagree with you there - ultimately if your choice is between sh*t and sh*t, it doesn't matter which sh*t you pick but it doesn't mean you can't still complain about the taste.

Perhaps I should start eating in different restaurants...

Supposing you have a choice of 2 parties, one is already in power and you dont like what they've done in your area. You'd rather not vote, based on a pre-conception that the other party will aslo be "sh*t" than give them a chance?

Surely you should at least vote out those who you dont like in order to give things an opportunity to change ?

Its a bit like driving a Ford and saying all Skodas are rubbish, without even trying one for yourself.

Re: Did you vote?

Didn't vote there are no elections in my area ......there will be a vote later on as a councillor is standing down.....but no one wants the job....been asked before but it's a no win job and I don't want to be stuck in a dammed if you do and dammed if you dont job...........................but if anyone doesn't like who the councillors are then put yourself up for the job....it's very easy to join in....just be prepared to be slated at every turn though

Supposing you picked up a Ford brochure, and rather than telling you what their products did it said "Skoda are rubbish, they do this, this and this and it's all bad"...and then you picked up a Skoda brochure, and rather than telling you what Skoda did, it said "Ford are rubbish, they do this, this and this and it's all bad"...would you buy either?

All you'd know is why you shouldn't buy each car, not why you should!

Plus, I think voting someone in to "just to give them a chance" is really not a good way to work - if someone gets voted in on this strength, there is every chance they will right royally screw things up beyond the point of no return. I would rather vote based on a demonstration of competence...

Re: Did you vote?

Well I voted - mainly because I feel I should as people have fought for the right to vote etc, and I wouldn't be happy if we couldn't.
Having said that, I think it would be interesting to have a "none of the above" box that you could tick on the voting slip. I think most of these politicians are as bad as each other, and it would be good to have a formal way to officially abstain (as opposed to either not bothering, or just spoiling the ballot paper). I suspect we won't though, as I'm sure the politicians would rather not know the answer!

Put it like that and I can sort of see where you're coming from. Until........

So if you dont want to vote for someon ewho isnt' in power, and you dont like who is in power what do you suggest? It seems a little bizarre to say that you shouldnt vote for someone who isnt in power - because how else do you expect things to change? If everyone thought along those lines we may as well have a dictatorship.

[my bold]

A friend was also advocating this option. I still can't see how that would work if those votes presumably could only be discounted, given that someone has to win

That could mean that someone was voted in on only one vote, since a fair number would probably tick the "none" box

Re: Did you vote?

No voting in our area either - I'm pretty sure we did ours on the same day as the General Election but it's hard to think of anything that has actually changed ... oh apart from them trying to close all the schools down

Re: Did you vote?

To vote for none of the above, all you would need to do is spoil your paper, presumably by voting for all of them or by writing on the paper.

Voted.

Had to choose between the woman who promised to deal with the issue of the local graveyard or the man saving the leisure centre I didn't know we had.And a third man whose voter swaying tactics I can't remember.Think it was to do with getting the bins emptied more often.

Top quality stuff.Wish I had voted for bin boy now though.

If you were an employer, would you choose an employee based on them being the best candidate for the job, or because they were "someone different"?
Change shouldn't be for the sake of change, it should be because there is something better.

From the junk that's been posted through my door/dumped on my car, there is nothing to differentiate the parties. They all base their policies on detracting from the opposition, without actually saying what they plan to do to improve matters.

To return to the job interview analogy, there's no point firing current employee and hiring someone new, because their CV looks identical.

Personally, I'd rather have a competent dictator than the choice of three imcompetent parties. And if the dictator turned out to be rubbish, he could be deposed immediately, rather than having to wait 4 years for another democratic election.

But lets face it - the chances of the lib-dems actually winning a general election are about the same as Skoda making a 2.0TFSI 4x4 Fabia Estate VRS.
