Do You Believe in God?

I don't believe in God. It's a shame really as I'm sure it must be a good feeling to have faith and feel part of a religious community. I was brought up in a highly Christian family and I know quite a bit about the Christian faith, but the longer I live, the more I see the ridiculousness of the concept of religion. I don't want to offend anyone who is religious, I respect those who have faith, I just don't agree with them.

The main reasons why I don't believe are;

The world has existed for hundreds of millions of years. If the life of the earth was compressed into 24 hours, then humans would have been on earth for the equivalent of 30 seconds. What was God doing all that time? And why wait til the final 1/2 second to reveal himself to The Humans?

The concept of one single God has only been around for the past 2 or 3 thousand years. The people of the earth believed in hundreds of different gods for tens of thousands of years before, and got by OK.

Religion is the biggest single cause of conflict and war in the history of the earth. If God existed, would he be happy watching everyone killing each other because of him, and allow such differing opinions of what is right to flourish?

I suppose religion gives purpose to our lives, it makes it all seem worthwhile and diverts our attention away from the fact that life is ultimately pointless. The vast majority of humans lead unremarkable lives, and are soon forgotten once they die. It must be nice to believe that you will end up going to heaven as a result of your good deeds and faith in God, when in reality you just die and that's it. Nothing more.

Whoa! Potentially controversial topic.

Personally I don't believe in religion either.
When you're dead you're dead, IMHO.

Re: Do You Believe in God?

I, too, am a non-believer. The meaning of life? You'll have to come up with your own answer to that one.

But it is a matter of belief and I'm not a fanatic - I seek no quarrel with those who have chosen another path as long as they respect my choice

Re: Do You Believe in God?

I definitely don't believe in god, (and generally refuse to spell the word with a capital letter) believe that when you're dead, you're dead, but that is probably because I've always considered myself a man of science rather than religion

I'm with you on that, but not even science has come up with an irrefutable answer to the question "What's the meaning of Life?"

Can be discussed. Religion has been used as an argument in many tragic conflicts. But the cause often lies elsewhere. Just take a look at Ireland - I think it would be to oversimplify to say that religion is the cause to the Troubles - or even one of many. That religion plays a part in the conflict is another matter, and I agree on that one

Re: Do You Believe in God?

Not every religion says you go to heaven or hell upon death........
I am religious. I always was, but, like many, it was just something I did, there was no depth to it, no substance. It was like doing the shopping but not buying anything - I'd waste the morning, but have nothing to show for it.
Painful experiences meant it became something of a comfort - to have something to hold on to.
I accept that the majority sentiment expressed so far is that it is essentially intangible and I would also suggest that it's the extreme application of selected portions of any religious belief structure that causes conflict - though to delineate conflict purely on religious grounds is quite simplistic - two world wars have been fought, both sides consisting of majority Christian denominations....(Japan the exception). Religion was not the issue there - rather nationalistic self-interest, political ideology and expansionist policies.
Extremists exist on both sides of the East/West religious camps. Don't let a few hook-handed nutcases and crusading knights taint everyone who subscribes to a belief in God.

Re: Do You Believe in God?

Personally, I think that when Moses was leading those people across the desert he was getting a bit p!ssed off with their rowdiness. I think he wandered off and chipped the ten commandments out himself, claiming that God gave them to him, so that he could keep a bit of order. Why else did it take him so long to come back with them?

Hi PittVRS,

I too am not believing in any god, but am accepting the fact that I could be wrong, but I am not being able to prove things. My mothers family would hate to be hearing me saying these things I think, but one should be in control and be the free thinker.

Sadly I am always thinking that it was a clever story that was invented here, to give those that are needing things a moral code, as the crutch for life.

Long before the law enforcers and police are coming along, then what better way than to scare bad people to tow the line, with the fear of the saying of hell fire and damnation. Even though people where having much less in early times, even with the poverty, crime would be less or minor as religion was used to keep one in one's place here.

I think that some person or group of persons in a country came up with an idea that was pure genius for the control of population, and so other countries were then copying this method, with maybe different gods, although principle, I think was the same here.

I think that maybe it is 40/60 as Religion is doing the good things, but many bad things are being caused, by its name. I think that bad is now ahead of good on this one.

As I am saying before I hate the politics and the religion, and look forward to some day, but I will not be here, when these things are not existing.

I am hating all politicians especially here, and am saying this many times on the forum.

Re: Do You Believe in God?

I agree, religion is just a control.

My wife attends church but maybe not as "religious" as her folks are and I occasionally go along but just cant see myself there at this time in my life.

I would like to think that I have grown up to be a morally decent human being, never been in trouble with the police etc, never battered my wife, look after and provide for my wife and children well etc. I have done this without guidance from the church or god as have millions of others accross the world.

I think the idea of a church community is just a big social club, a place to meet people and share thoughts and thats what some people need in their lives. Many of the people that I know through my wifes family that attend the church are hypocrits anyway and judging by their behaviour then they are no more morally correct than anyone else.

I'd love to be proved wrong but I just dont see this god thing at all.

Oh, and another thing. One of the ministers gave a sermen on finding christianity. He gave a friends experience as an example. Apparently he was an Iraqi citizen who came over to the UK. He found christianity while over here and was welcomed to the christian church. Only downside was he couldnt go back to Iraq to get his wife and family who couldnt leave for some reason, so he was never going to see them again. So, it was explained by the minister that because he had found the christian faith, seeing his wife and children didnt matter any more. WHAT??

Re: Do You Believe in God?

I was indoctrinated from an early age, a product of my C of E education I suppose. It was only when I got a bit older and able to think for myself that I got over it.

I really don't have a problem with anyone else holding religious beliefs, I do have a problem when those beliefs are considered more important and given more respect than my non-religious beliefs...

Re: Do You Believe in God?

I believe in God. I can understand why you as if there is a God when there is so much war and suffering in the world. I don't fully understand this myself. But I believe that God gave us a chose. He gave us free will of how to live our lives. And because of this free will people can chose how to live. Lots of people want to live good peaceful lives but there are people in the world who start wars and things.
Not sure if I make sense here.

Re: Do You Believe in God?

No it's nonsense.
go read Dawkins "The God Delusion". It lays it out quite starkly that it is all a bunch of tosh and generally unhealthy for the majority of people.

What's the quote

Quote:
"With or without [religion] you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, it takes religion
If you met God in your back garden you had better keep quiet about it or groups of people will spend the next thousand years killing each other over whether you put the milk in before or after the tea or if he took a bourbon or a garribaldi.

Religion is something we could do without. It would force people to take responsibility for what they do without having a higher power to blame it on. How many atheist suicide bombers have there been?

Re: Do You Believe in God?

I don't. I believe that religion is a mechanism to either control people, or make them feel better.

In the case of making them feel better, that's a good thing for those that wish to believe. I have no problem with people believing, provided they accept my right to not believe, and don't interfere in my life.

In the case of control, that's what I dislike. Think back in time where the churches were incredibly rich and people were starving on the streets, as well.

I've read "The God Delusion", and it's a very worthwhile read.

Re: Do You Believe in God?

My deity beliefs are not straightforward, I can't help but think there is something after this life, however, I doubt they would fit into the major religious groups. I guess I find I prefer the old religions of multiple Gods like the Pagan religions but I wouldn't say I'm any particular religion.

Other problem I have is when you start studying the various religious books and look at them in the social context of the time then you realise many of the edicts have a basis in social norms of the time.

I think in summary I have a belief in God(s) just not a belief in religion.

Re: Do You Believe in God?

I was brought up Catholic, went too church every week until I started bunking off at about 14-15, never quite grasped the concept myself. The wife goes every so often but not regularly, she's tried to rope me in but as I keep saying I'm "time served". I got into a discussion about this with a local fella who is well into it all, and he told me he belives in the fact that God created us all, and Darwin is all borrax (my word not his of course).
My father still goes every week, yet if you met him, he wouldn't strike you as your average church goer (he swears, farts, etc), I do wonder sometimes why he bothers, but I think alot of it is too do with my nans memory (bless her), she used go almost daily, yet hated anyone foreign ......lol.
As for the meaning of life, I don't think there is one , it's just life and thats it....end of.
I also have a sort of mate whos family run a church and do exorcisms quite regularly and have people speaking in tongues and that, They also are swimming in cash, but I think they are just shysters who prey on the weak, as they all ways have a collection in the "church" and are living in Barbados for the best part of the year. I even had him ringing me up and asking me too attend a prayer session on numerous occassions because I know a bit about God, this only happened a few times until I told him in no uncertain terms to feck orf, which apparantly was the devil making me say it as he didn't want too lose me......or some 5hit !!!
The clincher for me with mob was when his old man (the head of the chapel) got caught shagging some daft tart and according to them he had succumded to sin an ol' beelezbub was up too his tricks again.

So as you can see I know quite a lot about Religon and it's quirks and I've never once seen anything that made me think "oh hang on there's something in this". As fair as I can tell it's something your brought up with which then chose to carry on in later life, or you reach a point in your life were you have nothing else and turn too it as a support mechanism.

Either it's not for me thanks.

PS If fancy a good old laugh, have a look at what the Mormon take is and read about the bloke that wrote the book of mormon ( jospeh smith jr) and how he came too write the book. It will blow your how anyone belived him and then it became the foundation of one of the richest churchs in the world (hhmmm money and church again ....see the pattern).

No offence intended to any God fearing types out there btw, but this is my opinion, just as yours is about GodTM

Does anyone else remember the episode of Red Dwarf where a news bulletin reports on the discovery of a missing page from the Bible...

ooo, hang on... here it is:

To answer the original question, I don't believe in religion. Although I respect other peoples right to.

I do.So do numerous scientists and eminent surgeons (Not that I'm in either of those groups!)

I'm not going to harp on,just mention one article someone wrote about us now being a 'Godless society'

We are. It's incredibly sad and the most important things in peoples lives now seem to be cyber friends and games on an X box.

Don't know what happened in the last 20 years but we have one heck of a selfish modern world

I'll agree with that, but I don't think we need God & religion to fix it. What we do need is morals and a less selfish attitude. I suppose the one good thing with the churches was that they used to provide this kind of guidance.

We do need moral guidance and a more caring, less selfish society: I just don't think that that has to come from religion.
