Not only fanatics, but vitriolic, intolerant fanatics that might well develop into secularised suicide bombers. I follow (with disgust) a similar thread on a Swedish teacher's web forum and the hostility displayed by the non-believers there (apart from myself, of course )is absolutely shocking

I just want to say that I'm impressed by the tolerance shown here, from all participants of both parties

Also science will accept that it is wrong in the face of contrary evidence. The major religions are less keen to do that unless the evidence is farcically obvious i.e. if you said the earth was round, once upon a time, you'd have been a heretic. even the church doesn't stick by that one any more.

Religion is a method of controlling large populations. No different than a witch doctor threatening curses unless he gets his way.

The only difference between a religion and a cult is that cults pay tax.

Well, that's cleared that up then! CLOSE THREAD!

I had a Christian upbringing, moved away from it in my late teens, redabbled in my twenties but have never really settled into it. I'd like to have the 'blind faith' that the rest of my family do but it just doesn't sit right with me and there's certainly no way I'm going to be a half-hearted Christian. It's all or nothing for me and for now, at least, it's nothing.

I do believe that faith and religion are two completely different things. I may have a faith of sorts but I don't have a religion. Religion can be (note I'm not saying 'is') very dangerous, as other have said, both for causing conflict and taking advantage of people. So much of it is man-made and open to abuse and hipocrisy.

Absolutely and taken out of context some of these things have been used to make religious rules... Very very wrong. It does bug me when people don't actually look into the history surrounding their religion, maybe that's part of the reason I find it difficult to totally accept the Bible and Christianity, because I HAVE done some reading around the subject.

TBH I could go on about this for hours but I shall leave it at that for now!

"A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death."

Albert Einstein

that, for me, sums it up. I too am amazed how seemingly intelligent people can be taken in by what are effectively fairy stories written to keep the kids quiet at night. IMHO its complete nonsense and until such time as someone presents hard evidence to suggest otherwise i will continue on my path of reality and "ethical behavior".

I respect peoples choice to believe, whatever makes you happy i 'spose, but for me, no ta.....

Hear! Hear!

It annoys me greatly when die-hard non-believers in an over-simplified mode blame religion (and believers) for all wrongs. Take death penalty for adultery for instance (yes, think of stoning in some Muslim countries if you like).

We had death penalty for adultery here too in the 17th century (not stoning, but the culprits were beheaded and burnt). But it was the wordly powers - the king - that made that addition to our law (after the Lutheran reformation). Before that, such matters where dealt with by the church, and their punishments were much milder.

If you take a look at the historical context you'll find that religion and religious customs vary, and that much of the wrongdoings done in the name of God is in fact made for wordly reasons.

Albert Einstein
That's very nicely put (as should be expected from a brain like Albert's). But even if a religious basis is unnecessary those who take comfort or strenth from it should of course be free to do so.

The list of famous Einstein quotes shows him vacillating a bit. Remember his sceptic chip about the quantum theory: "I, at any rate, am convinced that He doesn't throw dice".

But he also said:

"I see only with deep regret that God punishes so many of His children for their numerous stupidities, for which only He Himself can be held responsible; in my opinion, only His nonexistence could excuse Him."
