Dog and cats living in harmony?

Just looking for some ideas and suggestions here, from my fellow pet-owning Briskodians.
We've had cats for many long years, but this year we've taken on a new pet -a 10 month old Tibetan Terrier.
She's a lovely little dog, (see my avatar pic) but I'm looking for any advice anyone can give regarding integrating her better with our two cats. One of them is a pretty tough character, and he's standing up to her and we're getting on quite well, although she'll chase him if he runs away.
Our other cat is a very nervous cresture, and is taking a long time to come back into the house -anyone got any ideas how we can move things along?

ta, Phil

Phil

I have a Border Collie and 2 cats, with the cats being with us prior to the dog. In our case it seemed as if the novelty wore off and after a short space of time they just accepted each other and more or less ignore each other. One of the cats often eats out of the dogs bowl at the same time as the dog now.

I really can't see what you can do other than just let things take their course. I'd suggest watching the nervous cat closely when the dog and cat are together, as it's this one that's likely to strike out, out of fear.

On a different note, my dog goes agility classes, jumps, hoops, tunnels, see saws etc, and a Tibetan Terrier joined last week and was really good at it......never seen a Tib Terrrier before......what a nice dog.

Thanks for that, pretty much what I thought.
We thought about all kinds of dogs but a friend of ours breeds TT's and we liked them so much, we got one! They will do training of all kinds, but they've got a stubborn streak that can make it a bit more challenging! "Sit!" Who, me?" "Sit!" "Why?" etc etc etc. But we're getting there.

She got her first shock yesterday when she lunged towards the cat and he stood his ground. She didn't know what the heck to do!

Re: Dog and cats living in harmony?

My old dog, Tandie, we got her at 9 wks old, we already had fatcat, 6 and tigger 1yr. fatty took a long time to get used to the dog, but the dog soon realised that she was the boss and that she needed to leave her alone. her and tigger, best mates always playing together and chasing one aother, we then got rosie, a very timid cat, she used to hide from the dog as she didnt want to play, but they got on, and then in time we got tooty cat, and they were joined at the tail, dog went out for a pee the cat followed, tiggy, tooty and tandie would sleep together every night and they missed each other rotten when they were apart. fatty never came round to the dog, or the other cats the most time, she was a right grump and def the boss of the house.

So it's the terrier that serves as your avatar? Nice looking dog! When I first saw it I thought it was a bearded collie but now I've got the whole picture

That's my experience too, and most likely the cats and the terrier will adjust to each other - since it's a young dog I think it will work out OK

Just as if you have a couple of dogs, it's about deciding who's the boss. And from the cats' point of view, there's a newcomer on their territory that must be learnt what's what. And a newcomer that 'speaks' strangely (wagging the tail carries one message among dogs, the opposite among cats). Older cats may also find young playful dogs a bit tiresome.

Re: Dog and cats living in harmony?

My cat taunts next door's dog through the hedge. One day, he decided to push through it, and when he did, they just sat there looking at one another. They didn't know what to do without the hedge in between. Then came the call "Excuse me mister, can i have my dog back please?".

Yep. She went to be groomed yesterday, so she looks a bit neater now. I like her best in full "plumage", which is OK for a show dog, but she's a country loving outdoor dog, and if you don't keep her trimmed she soaks up gallons of water and drags in pounds of local countryside hidden in her coat. The groomer filled a carrier bag with what she cut off, and she's still quite hairy!

Things are getting better now, but the youmgest cat is starting to take great delight in winding her up. Our neighbours are on holiday, so his best mate the ginger cat next door isn't around, so he's bored.

Animals, eh?
