Driving instruction cars - the difference pls?

Hello. In my own sweet way, I know they have an extra brake and accelerator which can override the learner driver's and probably mirrors strategically placed. I'm wondering what else there might be? Well, aside from a competent instructor in the passenger seat that is

Just a clutch and brake, no accelerator

They have "inspector gadget" type arms to reach for the steering wheel when required.

Surely, being a car, it has a simple ejector seat?

My driving instructor's car also smelt of damp and Polos ... or maybe that was my instructor!

Re: Driving instruction cars - the difference pls?

My first insutructor was horrible that was with BSM, so I swapped to a guy my mum used to work with at the police station, he became a driving instructor after being in police. he was much nicer

Re: Driving instruction cars - the difference pls?

A distinct smell of stale cigarette smoke.

Semi-serious; every instructor I ever had smoked, but I've rarely been in any other car that was obviously regularly travelled in by a smoker.

Re: Driving instruction cars - the difference pls?

Your post, KenONeill, reminded me of that line from the Airplane film: "Looks like I picked the wrong week to give up glue sniffing..."

I'm surprised there's no duplicate accelerator, though, to "get us the ahem out of this rather difficult situation" when necessary. Even more brownie points to instructors in that case

Regards
Mo

Lol, when my Dad's mum was teaching him to drive she used to say "Its no good, I'm going to have to have a cigarette!" Seems like she's not the only one lol.

Can't see that being the best of ideas TBH, as you haven't got a duplicate steering wheel and you'd have to rely on the pupil to guide you out of whatever predicament they'd just put themselves, you and the car in!

Brake and clutch is all you need for a controlled stop.

Re: Driving instruction cars - the difference pls?

most of the driving instructors cars i've seen have had thier idle speed increased to make it easier for inexperienced drivers to pull away without stalling

Re: Driving instruction cars - the difference pls?

Back when I was learning, a typical school car was a 1.0 or 1.1l supermini, so you couldn't "accelerate out of trouble" even if you wanted to!

Ho Mo

Just a brake and clutch. The driving test requires that any car fitted with dual controls that operate the accelerator must have the accelerator pedal dual control deactivated for the purpose of taking a driving test.

Generally, the idea is to not let your pupil get into a situation where you need to accelerate hard until they have the skill to do it themselves.

Other test car essentials:

L Plates or roof board

Tissues for when they pass or fail (tears more often than you would think. What are they made of these days?)

Large bottle of Vodka in the glovebox for pre treatment of instructor for the less able pupils.

Roll cage
