| DVLA chasing for car tax I'm getting letter from the DVLA demanding £80 because I haven't re-taxed or declared my old car off road. However, I traded my old car in 5 months ago when I bought the Fab. I've spoken to the garage (Skoda dealer) and they said the DVLA run really behind and just to ignore the letters, but I've just had another one today threatening court action. Obviously I'm gonna give them a call tomorrow and try and sort it out, but I wondered if anyone else has had the same problem? Will it just be a case of phoning the DVLA and saying I don't own the car any more?

| Re: DVLA chasing for car tax Just call them and tell them the situation, a mate had the same thing. They might ask for proof, but that will be on the V5 when you signed it over.

| Re: DVLA chasing for car tax Did you ever get a letter from the DVLA saying they confirm change of ownership ? If not then the skoda dealership / or you ... never sent the correct part of the V5 back, thus the car is still registered to you.

| Re: DVLA chasing for car tax The dealer should have given you the red part of the V5 back when you part exchanged the car. It is your responsibilty to tell the DVLA you no longer own the car, not the dealer. Also as mentioned you should have recieved a letter within a week or 2 stating that the car is no longer associated with you.

| Re: DVLA chasing for car tax Definitely call them as it wouldn't surprise me if you end up paying for it. I *never* trust anyone with signing over ownership of/scrapping off a vehicle. When I scrap one I get the paperwork done by the 'scrapper' and take it away signed/stamped/whatever they do & take it to the post office myself AFTER making a copy of it. At least that way you've done absolutely all that you can reasonably be expected to do. It used to be quite a common scam to 'buy' an old banger of someone and say 'we'll take care of the paperwork' to then find the car was not signed over to the 'new owner' who would then get done speeding etc. Guess where those fines end up going, and then you have to prove it wasn't you. These days the DVLA puts the blame 100% in the previous owner's shoes, so I've got even more paranoid.

| Briskodian | Re: DVLA chasing for car tax you will be paying the fine. its your responsibility to make sure you send in the yellow portion of the v5. not the dealers. DVLA are not flexible about this.

| Briskodian | Re: DVLA chasing for car tax Are you saying you part-exchanged your old car with the Skoda dealer? Are you also saying that they said they would be handling the documentation, or did they give it back to you? If they were meant to have sent it off, they should have a record of when it was sent, so have you asked them to check their records and see when it went off? Unless you already know that it wasn't sent, in which case someone must still have it. If you can't get through to the DVLA on the phone, they are very good at answering emails, so sending the details to them that way and asking what to do next might be an idea. Regards Mo |

| Re: DVLA chasing for car tax Phone them ASAP Were good 6 years ago when this came in and slip was lost in post. But now they have tightened up. That said who is responsible if lost in post? Another issue of Big Brother

| Re: DVLA chasing for car tax dvla grrr nova grrr dvla grrrrrr scrapped a nova and sent in the form saying so and got an £80 fine in the post so rang them straight away. a month later got another letter reminding me of the fine and mentioning court action. rang them again and they "made notes on the system" and advised me to write to them as its official so did so. 6 weeks later got another letter saying pay within a week or go to court so rang up again and they said it was all sorted but i wrote again confirming the situation. final court summons appeared a few weeks later so ended up paying the fine just to get it finished with. useless dvla bsatards. have had nothing but hassle with them over the last 4 years, absolutely useless organisation!! when i bought my focus in 2004(i think) i sent off the V5 and although they had my details on system i never recieved a V5 despite them apparently sending it out 4 fricking times!! recently had trouble again where i sent the forms off about a sierra i bought but it turns out it never got registered in my name for 2 months! and i even did that in my local dvla office not by post!

| Re: DVLA chasing for car tax The dealer is supposed to have sorted out all the paperwork side of it. There may have been some confusion though as there was also a cherished plate transfer that took place. I'll go into the dealer and have a word with them. Something else that I'm rather intrigued by is that as far as I know, they sold the car I traded in almost straight away, so someone is driving about in a car thats registered to me! Does that mean I can go and claim it back?! lol
