Dying for a drink (BBC Documentary)

I'm not sure on when this was broadcast, but I've just watched it on BBC i-player. Very interesting and thought provoking. Even though I don't drink a great deal (and when I do it's primarily for the taste of the drink, hence why I am an avid real ale fan), it made me think a lot. Definately going to think twice next time I look at the beer in the cupboard, as well as making me consider taking a few weeks a year teetotal.

Has anyone else seen it?

Re: Dying for a drink (BBC Documentary)

No I haven't. Guessing it's about the damage alcohol does? I think it's one of those things that you know, but it just doesn't stop you - like smoking, or eating chocolate - not doing you any good but you think 'oh well, one more wont hurt...'

I used to drink a hell of a lot between the ages of 16 and 18 - when I left school and got a job at the Pleasure Beach (which was more like a social life!) then it continued into college. My group of friends at the time tended to go to town most weekends, and in the summer when working at the pleasure beach we'd go to the star (the on-site pub) and get wasted every night then get up for work the next morning. How I did it is beyond me, I couldn't possibly do that now, the thought of getting drunk on a work night makes me cringe!!

I don't drink anywhere near as much as I used to. TBH, by the time I was legally old enough to do it I was bored of it. Also, circumstances change, you get new friends and new hobbies and now trips to town are not all that frequent, we find many other things to do.

I just have to hope that those few years didn't do me too much harm and that any damage is minimal. Thinking back it's pretty bad getting p!ssed most nights at 16. Thing is most people thought I was 19 so I got away with it lol. Now I get ID'd everywhere and I'm 22! They ID everyone nowadays though.

Re: Dying for a drink (BBC Documentary)

I guess (without watching the program) that theres a balance... i would expect going "on one" at the weekend is more harmful than drinking steadily throughout the week..
i drink alot, but its throughout the course of the month.. dont have one day thats loads worse than another... its just that beer is so cheap these days!! (compared to v-power lol)

Re: Dying for a drink (BBC Documentary)

I rarely drink, and only once or twice has it been to the point where I would call myself "wasted".

It's quite horrific to think that people do that week-in, week-out though

Re: Dying for a drink (BBC Documentary)

I have a beer most nights, I do have at least a night or 2 off during the week.

I have seen what alcohol can do to people first hand, work and home and I sure aint getting like these poor people did, it's not nice seeing them like it, luckely they are better now.

I was like Loz when I was younger, drank lots because 'everybody else did', I couldn't drink like that today although I do like going out once in a while and having a few so you know you are 'tipsy' but I know when to stop nowadays where as when I was younger that usually meant ending up in the middle of the college lawn?

Re: Dying for a drink (BBC Documentary)

I was only thinking this morning whilst brushing my teeth how my drinking habbits have changed.

When I was younger like Loz I used to get wasted all the time - in fact going to the pub meant that (getting wasted). When I used to come home from being offshore I'd get wasted too at teh earliest opportunity. Even after I'd had my son and I was on a night out (son would be with his dad or my folks) I'd get wasted but now I can go out and have the odd drink - perhaps I am finally growing up.

I read that as "I was only drinking this morning whilst brushing my teeth....." And I thought I'd got a problem..........

Re: Dying for a drink (BBC Documentary)

It's another one of those ones where I think: If XYZ is that bad for you, we'd have never come down from the trees / survived the last Ice Age / the Dark Ages - after all, 'drinking water' has only been around for the last 100 years or so, and prior to that, you'd be drinking Small Beer or boiled water regularly otherwise you'd get cholera / typhoid / diphtheria... I reckon as has been said above, it's the 'binging' aspect of it, much like how South Europeans and other white people from sunnier climes do OK outdoors because they're always out in the sunshine - it's when you do two weeks of Sun worship followed by nothing for the rest of the year that it becomes a problem. Everthing in moderation etc. etc.

If you consume an excessive amount of anything it's always going to bad for you.
The body needs a healthy balance.
