Unhappy Eczema

About a couple of months ago I thought I had an allergy. My eyelids had swollen up and I was fighting the urge to scratch constantly. I asked one of the Docs at work to take a look and he said it looked like an allergy. It got progressively worse and I was a bloody mess when I woke up most mornings. I bought some Piriton but that just wiped me out so I went to my GP to get another anti histamine that was non-drowsy. She thought the swollon eyelids were down to make up but I went back to her the other day no better and she has told me I have Eczema

I have always been the sensitive type and had to be careful with washing powder etc and had hoped that this was just a reaction to something that will sort itself out. I just seem to be getting worse even with the stuff she's given me to put on my skin. I am getting yelled at all the time for scratching but it's so satisfying, until the pain kicks in

What the heck can I do???

P.S. this thread has taken me ages to write because I keep having to stop for a scratch

Re: Eczema

I would deffo stop using what your GP has precribed if its making you worse or seem worse and go back.
Have you changed any other habits i.e. washing powders, perfumes??
Is it anywhere else??
Can I ask what you were prescribed??

Re: Eczema

I have done nought but wracked my brains since the beginning and can't think of anything. I was given a cream beginning with E it's downstairs at the moment. Emovate or something, I had a 0.5 cortisone cream for my eyes. she also told me to buy some aqueous moisturiser but my skin isn't dry, just bleeding itchy and feels like it's on fire right now

Re: Eczema

In the olden days they would just burn you.......
You might be allergic to your new posh watch. :
It could be that you have experienced a change in your hormonal system ( age you know) and you are no longer tolerant to things you once were.
I would try cutting out things one by one to see if it helps.
i.e. don't wear acrylic one week, avoid caffeine the next etc.
It may be a chore, but it might help.
Otherwise, just be a scratter, and blame it on the cat

My job can be stressful but I wouldn't say I'm stressed at the moment. I had reflexology recentely and was told my centre of emotion was very balanced

A couple of problems there Grumps, I don't get my new watch until Christmas day, I couldn't do early shifts without caffeine and I don't own a cat

Re: Eczema

Eumovate....its supposed to stop itching but can be quite brutal stuff.
Cortisone cream is very irritating, you only need a wee bit and should never use it all the time as I've seen it burn people.
Aqueous cream may at least soothe your itch but only that..
Sorry....trying to rack my poor old brain

Re: Eczema

I see this sort of thing fairly frequently at work. Never jump to the conclusion that it's eczema if you're an adult and never had it before.
Anyone with sensitive skin scratching will end up with a classical weepy "eczema" of the eyelids.
Often I find that there's a bacterial infection of the meibomian glands of the lids.
And any eyedrops with preservative makes the whole thing worse by fuelling the allergic component.
OK it needs examination by an ophthalmologist, but if I was going to treat "blindly" I would use a 3 day course of Zithromax or a a 3 week course of Tetracycline, oral Telfast daily for the itch (other antihistamines do sedate) and cold teabags to soothe (tannic acid in tea is a natural astringent). NO STEROIDS even on the lids unless your eye pressure is monitored (steroids on the lids can cause glaucoma in about 5% of the population!)

If I can help any more PM me

Cheers

Re: Eczema

Try aqueous cream....it's not at all oily and can be washed off with water.

I have eczema and find it very good.

Re: Eczema

i used to have some cream-cant remember what it was. and when i put it on, my feet would itch more than ever, but i just had to put up with it-even if it meant eating the pillow, and then after a while it will go away or i would fall asleep.

Re: Eczema

My eyelids are fine now (with the steroid) and were never weepy just swollen. It's my legs and my arms that are driving me mad, I put Eumovate aswell as the Aqueous cream on last night but it wasn't great. I ended up dead to the world thanks to Phenergan until 11.00 am so I couldn't scratch in my sleep

I'm not convinced it's Eczema personally, my skin is not dry or flaky

Re: Eczema

I repeat - I see cases of glaucoma/cataract in eczema sufferers who have over-done steroid use of any sort, even on the eyelids. Less than a week of therapy is probably safe, but fully 5% of the population are what are known as "steroid responders" and will show a pressure rise in the eyes after about 2-3 weeks.

I can tell you some real-life horror stories that I've seen......

Re: Eczema

I am not a doctor (as you'll know). I wouldn't take anything (pills) or use any chemicals for a while at all, if this is a new thing? (Cos you ain't got a clue what's causing what.)

Perhaps go to back to basics - plain water in the bath with just a flannel and drink lots of plain water? You say you have have bloating as well, and that to me means something you're eating, unles of course it's atmospherical chemicals (e.g. air fresheners). Probs no help at all, but being a sensitive soul (and skin) also, I always reckon that taking things away is better than adding things to, if you see what I mean.

Best
Mo

Edit - That's just me - sorry, forgot to say that.

nope, I don't have bloating!

I'm gonna give these creams a chance and after applying them this morning I've been not so bad. I'm hoping it's just a bad batch of washing powder or something at the same time as using a different mascara causing my swollen eyelids.

Are you Pregnant?
At the time of life when your hormones go beserk?
As I recall you are a short person that lives on an Island...
Visit the nearest Hostipal asap, and get a Visa and some pills, and immediately buy a caravan and a Volvo.
When I next see you in Cleethorpes on a wet bank holiday weekend, you will be cured

Actually I did see a rather nice Volvo in yesterdays paper that I was reading earlier. <------ I would've inserted the rubchin smiley here, but I don't seem to be able to access the pop up smiley page. My life is over

Re: Eczema

Just get Mr G to give you the cartesian coordinates and teleport yourself to Cleethorpes Pixi? They have lovely sand for making sandcastles there As you also have nice sand, you'll already have a bucket and spade packed up and ready

On topic, there are a couple of so-called "gentle" shampoos which, if I use in the shower, make me think I've got headlice, fleas and scurvy Luckily, I've learned to recognise this and empty them down the loo pronto. Ditto certain washing powders. Strangely, the liquid form of acceptable washing powders is still a no-no for me.

Best

Re: Eczema

Betamethasone Velrate (Betnovate)

Ask if that will be ok to use, not sure if it will be to strong for your case. I use it because my skin is so dry it makes the Saharra Destert a huge lake

This time of year i get major cracks and damn do the hurt but I use that and moistriser Vasaline Intensive Care which replaces natural lipids which has help tremendously over the last 2 years.

But ask anyway, it is soothing and a topical steroid cream which is very fast acting

SWMBO gets eczema and tried loads of stuff without much success. These days, when she gets a flare-up, she just washes with aqueous cream instead of soap and it calms down after a few days. Plus, you can buy it at the supermarket so she doesn't have to see the doctor every time!

Re: Eczema

I just found a study on a home-made cream mixture of olive oil, honey and beeswax that I've used for eczema patients in the past with success. I seem to remember that it made the skin heal well.
POC to make just heat up beeswax, olive oil and honey in a double-boiler and stir.
Makes regular skin silky smooth too.
Pixi, I'll email you a copy of the scientific study that proves how good it works.

Cheers
Bas
